By far the best demo of double knitting on the internet. Clear and easy to understand. Would love to see you demo a stranded project (you described this, but did not demo it) where you are knitting a two color motif in the round double-sided. I'm glad I found your page Jacq!

Thank you so much for your kind words and I'm glad you found this video helpful. Yes indeed, that will be a great video to demo a stranded project with a two color motif. I have some videos on fair isle knitting, but none yet with a two sided motif. Will definitely plan to do that in the future. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've seen a few videos on double knitting, but yours has the clearest explanation on how to cast-on and how to knit both sides at the same time. My grandma taught me the continental style, but when I got back to knitting a few years ago I switched to English style because it was so much easier to do purl stitches that way. However, I think that continental knitters have so much easier and a faster way of double knitting than the English style knitters. I guess I'll have to practice my continental purls and I already feel dreadful about it lol

Thank you and I’m glad this video was helpful. Knit which ever way you feel more comfortable. It is nice to practice both ways too to be a bit more flexible. I always feel awkward knitting English style but it is helpful when I do fair isle knitting. Then I knit one color with each hand. Keep at it and happy knitting.

Hi, thank you for the tutorial. You made double knitting look easy. I’d like to try double knitting a sweater. Could you please have an end-to-end double knitting sweater tutorial? From this video, I learnt that you learnt how to knit with the English style but you’re more comfortable with the continental style. So, could you also show how to hold both yarns on the right hand for English-style knitters too, please? Thank you very much. You are very clear and such a great teacher. Have a nice day 🙏

Thank you for reaching out and your suggestions for videos. A double knitted sweater would be very interesting and I have not designed such a sweater (I only can do videos on my own designs). I try to steer away from long complicated projects like a sweater as it would just be too long of a video for KZbin. I will see if I can find a double knitted sweater pattern and forward link to you. Regarding English style double knitting … having both of your yarns in your right hand makes for a very slow and awkward knitting so I have not mastered a good way to do this. You can view this video I found on it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3nGiJmdiK1_eK8si=ri-2pp2ThBAzC8K_ But I would suggest if you are doing any bigger project with double knitting is to try to be comfortable with holding one of your yarns in your left hand. In the long run it will go much faster for you. Sorry I couldn’t be more of an immediate assistance. Best of luck to you and I appreciate your positive comments.

@@jacqknits Hi there, thank you so much for replying and giving the link to English-style double knitting tutorial. The method does look like it's best for chilling knitting with a glass of wine (or two!) You're very kind. I agree it will take a longer while to finish a project with the throwing style. I've been learning how to knit continental style but I'm hopeless haha Not born gifted for this style at all. I'm still clumsy. It's still very helpful/useful to know when doing double knitting when I can hold each strand on each hand. Anyway, re sweater tutorial, no pressure :) A humble suggestion, if you some day will give it a go, you may break the video into section, like neck, body, armholes, sleeves, etc. I tried my first sweater and it's still one of my UFOs haha stuck at the armholes and sleeves + neck the last (I made a personal mistake to do the bottom-up sweater). Anyway, thanks very much once again for great stuff and answering. Keep on educating us novice knitters, please. Have a lovely day. Cheers!

Thanks for the video! It was very clear and helpful! Is there a way to double knit without creating empty space like a pocket inside? So the two parts won’t be separated?
@jacqknits2 ай бұрын
I am not aware of anyway to do this with double knitting and still keep one color fully on one side and the other color on the other. If you make a design in your double knitting, by knitting your back color in the front and vice versa to create a shape or design, then your two pieces will be attached. But you could only do that by reversing your front and back color for specific stitches to make your design. Or if you just wanted to connect your front and back pieces, you could reverse your front and back yarn for a couple stitches strategically placed in your fabric to connect the sides. You would end up with tiny polka-dots of the back color showing through to the front. May be a pretty way to attach them.

Great video I have a silly question is this using continental or English style
@jacqknitsАй бұрын
For most of the video I show this continental style with the working yarn in my left hand (for both the method where you knit one color at a time, or when you knit both colors at the same time and holding both of your yarns in your left hand). Toward the end of the video I show how you can knit both colors by placing one color in your left hand and the other color in your right hand (English style). So in that way you are using both methods.
I’ve started a hat and have found that you have to tighten up the pearl rounds or you will have a bulkier side.
@jacqknits2 ай бұрын
Yes this may happen if you find that your purling is a looser tension than your knit. If you can tighten that up that will help. I made a baby hat in double knit and both sides were equal but my tension may be different than yours.

Thank you for an excellent tutorial!! Do you have a video or explanation anywhere on how to cast off with this method?
@jacqknits9 ай бұрын
There are a few different ways to cast off for double knitting providing different looks to the cast off edge. You can do a very basic bind off as well. You just knit or purl the next stitch as pattern calls for and pass the previous stitch over your last stitch (keep yarns in back when doing the pass over). There are videos out there which shows different methods. I have a future video coming on this but it isn’t published yet I’m afraid.

Very interesting & clear work. Is there a possibility of casting on the stitches for all knitting, not purling? Please, let me know. Thank you so much !!
@jacqknits11 ай бұрын
I have not done that, but you could certainly do that. The cast on edge may look slightly different and you would need to be sure on your first round you are knitting the first stitch on your needle with the yarns in back and purling your second stitch with the yarns in front and continue that fashion throughout the row. Thanks for reaching out.

THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL EXPLANATION!!! I have a question. I want to use two colors but not in the round . I want to do a scarf with two different color sides. I want to use the slip stitch method but I am doing something very wrong cause I end up with my ends of yarn coming from both sides.🙄. Help. And it is not one solid color on either side. Should I not be moving my yarn in front of both the knit and purl sides?? The frustrating thing is I did a double knit twin sz. Throw gor my grandson YEARS ago and it turned out perfect , now I can’t even do a simple scarf the right way. 🥴🥴🥴🥴 Help and THANK YOU!!!!
@jacqknits Жыл бұрын
That is an excellent question. I have planned to do a video on this in the future, but haven't done so yet. But let me try to explain how to do that salvage edge for double knitting with two colors when working flat. 1. At the end of every row, stop before the last pair of stitches. Then with both yarns in back, slip the knit stitch purlwise. Then with both yarns in front, slip the purl stitch purlwise as well. 2. At the start of every row: with both yarns in back, knit the knit stitch through the back loop. Then here is the tricky part ... 3. Bring both yarns to the front, but before you purl that stitch, twist your yarn so that the yarn in which you are purling that stitch is laying ON TOP OF the other yarn. In essence trapping that other yarn underneath the stitch when you purl. 4. Then carry on the rest of the row with your double knitting. Do the above at the start and end of each row. Remember that you are always bringing both yarns to the front or to the back to do each of the above steps. That number 3 is a bit tricky and you may want to practice first with a small swatch to get the groove of that before you go on to your larger project. I hope that helps! best of luck as you work on this project. It sounds like it will be beautiful.

Jacq, is this a jogless join? I'm ok with double-sided knitting, but never have done so in the round. I'm looking for a hat pattern and want to be sure design is correct. THANKS!
@jacqknits11 ай бұрын
Yes, you can use the technique shown in this video for double sided knitting in the round for a hat. If you are doing only one color on each side, there will not be any trouble with jogging as you would with stripes. If you want your cast on edge to join seamlessly, I usually graft those edges together at the end when I weave in the ends to close up that little gap in the cast on. Hopes that helps. Thanks for reaching out.

How many stitches to cast on of each color?
@jacqknits4 ай бұрын
For this video I was just doing a simple swatch of knitting in the round, so it wasn't for a specific project, so there is no specific number of stitches to cast on. Generally though when casting on for double knitting you will need to cast on a PAIR of stiches for each cast on stitch. So for example if you are knitting a hat in the round and normally you would cast on 60 stitches, you will need to cast on 60 PAIR of stitches. 60 of one color plus 60 of the other color. You will have a total of 120 stitches on your needle. 60 of the front color and 60 of the back color. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for reaching out.

But why ? Just keep knitting them at the same time flipping the yarn back and front
@jacqknits4 ай бұрын
Yes, I show both ways in this video. The first part I'm showing how to do it one color at a time for those who don't like holding the two colors of yarn and knitting them at the same time. Then about the 16:35 mark in the video I explain how to knit both colors in the same row bringing the yarn to the front and back. So both methods are shown here in this video. I call the first the slow and easy method and the second way the faster, but more difficult method (difficult for beginner knitters).
