Awesome video! Looks beautiful! I plan a trip to northern Scotland in next years May. I have some experience with one handed rods on brown trout, but never caught a salmon nor fished a two handed rod. Do you have a recommendation for rod and line/leader for fishing in rivers like Nairn, Findhorn…? In general I thought of a 13-14 foot rod in class 8/9 but I am not sure whether the rod and line suit together. Your equipment in the description looks fantastic however its kind of out of my range of budget. I would be happy if you have an recommendation on the lower end of price which fits good as a beginner. Thank you in advance! Tight lines!
@miamiheat236817 күн бұрын
additionally I thought of a two handed rod instead of a switch rod as it should be more beginner friendly for Spey casting? 😅 in terms of skandi and skagit I thought about skandi?
@nairnfly15 күн бұрын
If you haven’t done salmon fishing before than that’s no small task. Firstly May is a good time as there will be a few spring salmon around. For a small river like the Nairn you could get away with using a trout rod rather than a switch but for any other bigger river then I would recommend for a beginner a Shakespeare Oracle 2 Scandi12ft 9in rod line #8/9. As for lines try either a Rio Outbound scandi #8/9 or a really good line for the money is a Bloke switch line rated 8/9 I would probably recommend the later especially since its half the price and a superb line. In terms of fly reel any reel with decent drag will be ok as the rod and line are the most important. As regards flies try Dee Monkey conehead or Gold bodied Willie Gunn or a Park shrimp…you don’t need much else. Would recommend watching a few videos on youtube on how to master spey casting there are a few good ones around. If you get stuck with anything please get back in touch. Dave

Looks like you've had a great season Davey. Some great fights off these magnificent animals. Thanks again. Looking forward to you adventures next season. Cheers and much appreciated. Ewan. 🏴
@nairnflyАй бұрын
Thank you very much thats really appreciated Ewan. It does take a wee while to put it all together but its a bit of fun to do. I try to put out footage to get more people interested to take up salmon fishing and let other anglers have an idea of what the beats look like. Think myself very lucky to live centrally in the highlands as there is plenty scope for fishing. This year has seen a lot of fish in the rivers and a fair bit of rain which helps a lot :)

Awesome videos, spent a lot of time in that area holidaying as a youngster, question ? When you feel a salmon take do you let it take line off the reel before lifting into it ? Cheers
@nairnflyАй бұрын
Thanks Richard, normally i fish with a loop of line but sometimes when i feel the line go i lift too quickly so have been trying to fish off the reel recently. Having said that i dont normally loose many fish i think fishing the loop allows the fish to take fly and turn before hook is set.

Some cracking fish pal, good to know the Nairn is still fishing well. You have one more subscriber. Might go down to Pat Fraser's next year and get a ticket. I'm only on the top of the hill above Auldearn so it's handy enough. Well fished mate.👍

Thank you John the Nairn was good when we had water early on, just dipped a bit over the summer. Hopefully see you on the bank next season then👍👍
@johnkidd7972 ай бұрын
Just saw you on the Nairn, I have had hundreds of fish out of the Holme Rose beat in the years i lived on it. Some over 20lb but never a 30 plus. Lord Campbell "Gordon" gave me personal permission to fish his stretch. Never ever caught as many as Gordon Rennie, he was exceptional in the effort put in R.I.P.👍🏴

Lovely fish, back in the 70's as a kid I would grab my rod, a pin,a few prawn and go and get a couple for the dinner table. As an adult I fish the fly for pelagics but haven't bothered for Salmon in years. Might get back into it next year, still fish for sea trout in the salt occasionally as I prefer the taste to salmon. Cracking day you had there considering how low the numbers are these days. 👍🐟🏴

Thank you, yes luckily i live not to far. There really isn't any other river like the Findhorn that i have fished, you should try some of the middle beats they are spectacular.
@kertolen13482 ай бұрын
Nice fishes and epic scenery… a lil tip, next time you try to land the salmon when your bank is just a rocky shallow beach… just walk backwards and the fish will follow you and fall to its side. No need to use a net and try to reel it in, they dont like reeling, but you can walk then like a dog on a leache. Try it out
