For landscape it’s fine. The criticism I think was that OM were basically rehashing an old Olympus camera, old sensor. I think it’s a lazy release from OM. And its £1250 with kit in UK, too pricey. I had it and returned it.

I assume it has wi-fi transfer to the OI Share app like my OM-1 does, so I’d just use that as I do now, rather than use Micro USB. And you can use an external charger if you wanted, so even that isn’t the biggest problem with the camera. I’d be more impacted by the menu system, because I love the UI on the OM-1. It’s really nice to use. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with the successor. I assume it’ll fix all the obvious criticisms, and put the specs closer to the original OM-1 I have. I doubt they’ll go any further than that; or be able to physically. I also hope they go back to metal. I do agree that they did plastic in an impressive way. But at the end of the day, it’s still plastic. Metal just feels nicer and more sustainable. But it’ll still be coated with the rubberised plastic grip so I guess it doesn’t matter that much.

I don’t like the tiny Micro USB interface nor opening the little plastic door leading to that area on the camera. I am afraid of bending the contacts when I insert the charger cable and the little plastic door barely stays shut. I bought an external Green Extreme single battery charger and the battery charges remarkably faster in fact than when I used to charge in camera. I prefer to open the battery compartment and just remove the battery to charge it. I would rather fool around with the battery compartment latch versus the little plastic door leading to the micro USB.

The OM5 is a very good camera if you never used the earlier models in the same series (EM5i, ii and iii). If you are coming from earlier models, it is tremendously disappointing. All of the flaws introduced in the EM5iii remained with minor technical improvements to the EM5iii. Many like myself were loyal to the EM5 series as it was once the best camera in that mid range area when considering size, build quality, IBIS and general capture performance. With the OM5, we have a decent camera crippled with the deficiencies of the EM5iii and really not improving on it in any major way. I'm hoping that the OM5ii if it is ever built will at least bring USB-C, a tripod mount that doesn't break under minor strain, a better battery door and latch and an improved battery. You will notice I'm not asking for better IBIS or a better sensor or better PDAF etc. as all of these things have been fine for many years since EM5iii and were good enough years ago. Also, they need to bring back a battery grip. Essentially they cheapened the camera to not compete with the OM1 series but this was a mistake as the use cases are very different.
@GLu-qc6vnКүн бұрын
The only flaw of the OM-5 that affects me is one you mentioned, the (very likely, not absolutely certain) weak tripod mount that could break and destroy the camera. I found the rest of the flaws to be trivial in practice. But I'll never use a carry method that stresses the tripod mount, and I wish I could. The pluses of the camera outweigh this and make it my favorite.
@gregfeeler691023 сағат бұрын
Wow - I have had an E-M5 Mk I back in the day, and just picked up a replacement, and also an E-M5 Mk III and now an OM-5 and I don't see the deficiencies that you seem to. I've heard rumors about the E-M5 Mk III tripod mount being "weak" but had no problems myself, but OM System did say that they reinforced that with the OM-5. Both the E-M5 Mk III and OM-5 are much lighter than the prior versions, and are that much easier to carry. For me, the features from the E-M1 Mk III OMS put into the OM-5 make it the best travel camera on the market.
@GLu-qc6vn21 сағат бұрын
@@gregfeeler6910 I love the OM-5, but the talk of reinforcement of the tripod mount came from a mid-level marketing representative in some country, not OM System HQ. I researched this for a few hours online and never found any official statements about reinforcement. (Which should be easy to find if they exist.) I'd guess it is improved from the EM5 Mk1, but there's no proof of that.

Hello Jimmy. I got this camera last September 2024, after selling all my Nikon gear, I was well aware of the reviews but there's only one person I listen to, and that's me. You are right that the 12-45 f4 is a perfect lens for it but I resently got the Panasonic 14mm F2.5 which is always on my camera now, except when I do wildlife with it ( which In fact it's very capable of doing). Like you I use a separate dongle to download my images to my ipad and the only time I use the micro USB in when I'm hiking to recharge the camera after a days shooting, I have no issues with the camera, I fact since I've got it I've dropped it from waist height 3 times with lens attached and it bounced and still works. I'm in a place with my photography now that suits me just fine, whenever I go out, even if it's to do the grocery shop the om5 is in my jacket pocket with the 14mm F2.5, it literally goes everywhere with me. I couldn't do that with my big Nikon gear. Great Channel Jimmy, keep up the good work and positive voice for the om5. Joe.

At the end of the day, Jimmy, it really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about your gear, editing style, or the photos you take. If you enjoy using your camera and love the images you create, that’s what truly matters. This sentiment applies to all photographers. Sure, it’s nice when others appreciate your work, but so much of the hype around the latest 'must-have' gear feels like noise, people chasing trends to seem relevant. A lot of it lacks substance. Stick with what you love, and keep creating. I watch your content because you come across as genuine, and I enjoy your photography. Simple as that. It’s great to connect with others who truly love photography.

I just bought one, despite people telling me M43 will die and all other negatives that are uninformed opinion. I don't like large cameras and lenses, and the choices are massive. No. It's great for street photos, taking on hikes and walks, photographing family and everyday life. And it's fun to use. The OM-1 menu wouldn't work. Some people, for years have put down plastic bodied cameras and lenses. Well, you can't dent plastic, and while it can break, I cannot imagine what kind of force would be necessary to do so. When you take into account that it's lesser weight, doesn't get as cold or hot as metal, I'm sold. I've had cameras since the 1960's, some metal, some plastic and I'll take the plastic any day. That said, I do wish OMS had made the tripod socket stronger, as its not recommended to use that for anything other than a tripod, i.e. no clips or straps attached there. I have had this camera for a year and highly recommend it if it fulfills your needs

I have been using the em5iii for years, always with a clip, lenses up to the 12-200. No problem at all. Don’t let that scare you off. The thumb grip is a design flaw as it keeps coming off. Had it repaired under warranty, now I glue it back myself. Wonder if the om 5 fixed that ? Fantastic camera especially outdoors. Low light + movement is not its forte, and autofocus is no miracle. But I don’t think that the upgrade cost to the om5 is going to make a significant difference on that.
@robertavery80022 күн бұрын
IMHO, for the price the OM5 is a fantastic little camera. OK, the menu is a bit clunky, but you can set up a 'my menu' for easy access to your most used features. Even in very low temperatures I can get about 300 shots from a full battery. It's one of very few cameras suited to rainy climates with its IP53 weather sealing, and coupled with a 12 - 40mm f/2.8 pro, the image quality for a small sensor camera is excellent. As for the lack of a usb C, who cares? Just buy a cheap 3rd party charger with a couple of third party batteries and forget about 'battery anxiety'! It also benfits from a very useable evf, sadly lacking on many small cameras. It's probably one of the most enjoyable cameras I've ever used, and will continue to use.

Admittedly, I was a bit disappointed when the OM-5 first came out, for all the reasons you mentioned (although imho they are minor). As an E-M5 III owner (basically my go-to camera for a year or three/four at this point) it's not a huge step up. That don't make it a bad camera though. It all depends on where you stand, and where you want to go. If you're coming from an older or lower tier Olympus camera (say E-M10 or Pen series or something) It's a huge step up. Arguably, for it's all it flaws, it's a bit of power house in it's own right (essentially you're looking at an E-M1 III in a smaller package). It's super small, weather sealed, and for it's price point (even more so on the second hand market) absolutely feature packed. The more I look at the OM-5, I feel it even has a thing two to offer that were carried over from the E-M1 III for me over my current E-M5 III. I'm considering scooping one up on the second hand market and making it my daily driver, and relegating my E-M5 III to backup duties.

A wise man talking again. Most of the moaners were owners of the EM-5 mk III. OM System must have had lots of it's parts available, hence the same body and electric parts - and the micro USB. I came from OM-10 mk I and mk IV, so I knew what to wait with the OM-5: phase detect autofocus, speed and some super features. Poor battery life because of the speed... Old menu system is not an issue, I'm so used to that. I bought two extra batteries, a cheap 3rd party charger for two simultaneously (with USB connection). And of course a "dummy battery", which goes to the battery compartment and connects via USB, from a powerbank or even mains, with 2 meters lead. So, USB problem solved. From Amazon Germany, cheap but works like charm. I even ordered an extra battery compartment cover from OM System and punched a hole into it for the cord that comes out of the dummy. I don't know, whether even needed, but I have used the dummy in long video conferences, when using the camera as a webcam. And when shooting loooong star trails with LiveComp (StarrySky AF shines here) in a cold weather on my terrace. BTW, that's something you have to try in those beautiful rocky coasts (hmmm... where is the snow?). It is soooo easy. Put the camera shooting the sky with LiveComp and light paint the rocks with a torch. I've got large hands, and I love these little vintage looking cameras. Just received a tiny Lumix 12-32mm, so cute combo for casual shooting. Your 20mm looks fantastic. My 17mm M.Zuiko yet to arrive.

I agree that it would be better to wait to see what the upcoming new OM Systems camera will be, if one is able to pay new retail prices. Also, the OM-5 price may drop if the new upcoming camera can replace it. I saw many more negative reviews in the first 10 months or so after the OM-5 release, and more positive reviews made since then. I ignored the negative reviews because they only brought up the same 4-5 flaws, and only one of those (probable weak tripod mount) concerned me and reduces my flexibility. (The menu systems is indeed ridiculous and hard to learn, but I'm willing to invest time in that.) I almost feel like there was some sense of moral outrage or personal insult in the most harsh reviews. How dare they issue a nonUSB-C input! Or the negative reviews failed to consider overall system trade-offs, such as a higher expense to design and build tooling for a new body for a larger and heavier battery.

@jimmywestphoto the easiest way is to set the aperture to f8 and the distance to 3 meters. Now everything from 4 feet to Infiniti will be in focus. Beats any Sony af😉. But take a look at the website of DOFMaster. There are many settings you can play around with. 🤙

Hey Jimmy, nice video ! It looks like on all the pictures you show there is slight grainy effect, like you're shooting on film. Are you editing this effect ? Or maybe it's noise from high-ish ISO and you don't mind it ? I just bought my first ever digital camera (the OM-5 hehe ) and I'm learning a lot thanks to you, so please keep doing these great videos about this camera 😇

Hi there! No, I’ve been editing with grain, so that’s what you’re seeing. You will hear a lot of people talking about m43 and noise / grain but really, don’t sweat it too much. 😊 I don’t want to overwhelm you with information, but keep your photos properly exposed and you’ll rarely have issues with noise. I was out in Gothenburg on Sunday in the evening and was shooting a lot around 5000-6400 ISO and sure, you can see the noise at that point but the photos are not unusable at all. Cheers for checking in! Be sure to ask questions if you have any and I’ll answer them as good as I can! Wishing you the best Jimmy

Absolutely loved this video, you seem like an awesome guy! I'll definitely be thinking of your tips and reasons when looking for new lenses. A prime lens is definitely on my mind, I'm just not sure which one yet. Keep this going man! You've got my sub forsure ^-^

What an awesome comment! Thank you so much. Which primes have you been looking at? And for which camera? Thanks for the sub! Wishing you the best of 2025 Jimmy

@@jimmywestphoto Thanks Jimmy! I've been looking at a few different vocal lengths in lenses. Something between the 20-30mm is always a good option but I doubt if I need it or not. I've also been looking at the 105mm from Sigma. Definitely a lot of options out there!

I've used the Oly primes 17mm/1.8, 25mm/1.8 and 45mm/1.8 for more than ten years with my OM-D E-M10 and E-M10 m3. I love how small and light they are, and how good the pictures turned out. I am far from being anywhere near professional, so no clue about rendering etc, I just liked the sharpness and the colours. Sometimes it was a hassle to change the lenses when being with people - shooting portraits and sceneries at the same time is tricky. Sticking to just one focal length is a good way to getting used to certain frames for sure, and I have enjoyed that as well. When I bought the OM5 last September, I also got the Oly 20mm/1.4 pro, and my latest purchase is the rather old Oly 75mm/1.8 but I haven't used any of them much lately as I was busy digitalizing my father's slides from the 80s with the Oly 60mm/2.8 macro (and the Valoi easy35). For taking pictures of friends and family during the holidays I took the lazy route using just the Oly 12-40mm/2.8 pro lens. I do need to go out more, I am aware of that, and I will definitely go with just one prime at a time. Thanks for your thoughts and the beautiful photos you shared, as usual!

Oh, I've heard so many good things about the 17mm f/1.8! Enough that I ended up buying one second-hand, even though it's not weather-sealed (I'm still waiting for delivery). But honestly, I figure I can always rely on my 12-45mm if the weather gets really rough. I've also heard that the 17mm f/1.8 holds up pretty well in less-than-ideal conditions-have you found that to be true? Getting your father's slides digitalized sounds like such a rewarding project. How are you finding the process? Is it smooth with the 60mm macro, or has it been a bit tricky? It’s such a meaningful way to preserve those memories. And thank you so much for the kind words-it’s always a pleasure seeing you here. Wishing you an amazing 2025! Jimmy

@@jimmywestphoto Aww, thanks also for your kind words, wishing you and everyone around a fabulous 2025 as well, of course. I think that due to the aperture of 1.8 the small primes are all working very well in difficult conditions. Since the E-M10 is not weather sealed it has never been an issue for me. I just kept them warm and dry indoors. ;D But you have your solution at hand when the conditions are tough. I am really looking forward to seeing your results! I did the digitalizing of the slides (and negatives as well) already once with some cheap device, and I was never satisfied with the outcome. So when I read about the Valoi easy35 (from Kamerastore in Tampere, btw) I got all excited and started to do it all again. It does take a lot of time but for me it is worth the effort. Cheers from Berlin, Seb

I think you give great advice here and that's exactly how I did it, using a standard zoom kit lens, a good number of years back. Most people who are new to photography will end up with a camera and corresponding kit lens and when you start out, understandably, you kind of zoom in and zoom out, all excited, with no real understanding or direction. But the, after mastering the basics, you begin to see which are your favourite focal lengths and hone in to 28/35/50/85, for example, and once you start understanding those, that's when a real buzz starts to happen, so it's excellent advice you give and there will always be a place for zooms and always be a place for primes. I'm shooting a lot of 50mm (FF) B&W at the minute and loving it. There's so much one can do, so many different directions to take with photography, it can really never get stale... Great video and really nice shots and I love that, to my eyes at least, slightly desaturated (or, saturated just to the right level), ancient creamy look to your colours.

Thank you so much for the kind words-I really appreciate it! I completely agree with you about the progression from experimenting with a kit lens to discovering your favorite focal lengths-it’s such an exciting journey. There really is a place for both zooms and primes, and the process of honing in on specific focal lengths is so rewarding. Shooting 50mm B&W sounds incredible-it’s such a classic and versatile focal length. I’ve been meaning to try B&W more seriously myself; it has this way of stripping a photo down to its essence that’s so powerful. Do you usually do walkabouts with the 50mm, or is it more specific shoots? Also, thanks so much for the compliment on my colors. Wishing you a fantastic 2025! Cheers, Jimmy
@innercityunit21126 күн бұрын
@@jimmywestphoto Hi Jimmy, I usually do photo walkabouts with 50mm and 35mm, as they cover most of what I need. This is a topic we could discuss endlessly since it’s both technically objective and highly subjective, depending on the photographer’s artistic vision and the moments they aim to capture. 50mm is fantastic for a more subject-centric approach. Its natural looking perspective helps create clean, minimal compositions, while its ability to isolate subjects makes it ideal for portraits or tightly framed scenes. On the other hand, the 35mm excels when context and storytelling are a priority. Its wider field of view provides more of a sense of immersion, making it perfect for tight spaces like street markets or tighter urban environments, so I switch between the two focal lengths accordingly. As I like/try to keep things as simple simple as possible on the move, these are my main go-to focal lengths. Occasionally, I’ll shoot 28mm for establishing shots or switch to 85mm when I want more subject isolation and compression, but I love 35 and 50. I think your 40mm sits in a sweet spot between 35 and 50mm, offering a versatile balance of context and subject isolation, so it’s definitely a great choice!

The OM Systems 20mm f/1.4 pairs well with the OM-5. You'll love it, and it's weather sealed. I owned and used almost exclusively, the 17mm f/1.8 for about a year. I was amazed how much using one lens at one focal length for many months improved my composition and my ability to 'see' a photo without my camera. Today, I probably use the 20mm f/1.4 more than the 17mm. Funny story, I bought the lens used from a guy who preferred 17mm and was selling his 20mm. For me, the rank order is: 20mm, 17mm, 25mm and 45mm, with the 45mm being used only about 5-10% of the time.
@jimmywestphoto8 күн бұрын
I'm sure I'd love the 20mm f/1.4, but the size, man-it’s almost as big as the 12-45 that's what makes me hesistant. Even though weight isn’t an issue, I want something small and portable. I don’t know why I’m that sensitive, though-it’s not like I walk around cities doing street photography! 😂 I did end up buying the 17mm f/1.8 just yesterday, and I hope it arrives next week. I also own the 45mm, and while everyone says it’s such a great lens, I don’t find it useful for much besides portraits. Where do you find yourself using the 45mm the most? Wishing you all the best for 2025! Cheers, Jimmy

@jpsteiner2 Hey! Since KZbin doesn't have a PM function I pray you'll get this notice and see this message. Do you know if It's possible on the OM-5 to AF Lock on the AEL/AFL button? Currently I'm just BBF but I want to experiment with C-AF on half-press on shutter, but then being able to lock AF with AEL/AFL instead. I can't get it to work in the menu and I don't find anything about it on the forums Cheers! Jimmy

Hello again! Nice photos with a nice lens and a useful practicing tip. As it happens, I just yesterday ordered a used Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f1.8 from our superb Kamerastore in Tampere (Tammerfors) - (some must-see-videos about them here to search...). I also thought about the Panasonic 20mm, as it seems to be sharper in full aperture. But since I already have the Oly 25mm, and because the Oly 17mm is just so cool looking with the Dof markings and MF clutch, I presume I'll be satisfied with it's picture quality. If not, it is so easy to sell back and get something else. The 25mm has been great in low light situations like churches, but just a bit too narrow many times. Next weeks will show, if the 17mm will stick to my OM-5 for forever.

Thank you, and hello again! Funny enough, I also ended up buying the 17mm f/1.8 just yesterday. It really does have such a cool look with those DoF markings and the MF clutch-I couldn’t resist either. Please let me know how you think it performs once you've had some time with it! Wishing you all the best for 2025. Cheers, Jimmy

I shoot with the E-M5 III. I bought the Olympus 17 f1.8 to compliment my f4 lenses. I wanted something light and fast for low light situations, I usually keep the 12-45 f4 on my camera at all times like you. After watching a Thomas Eisl video I decided to buy the 20 f1.4 Pro. It balances nicely on the camera, the bokeh is beautiful, and the color rendering is really nice. I prefer it to the 17 now! Thanks for your videos. Love your channel.

Oh, that sounds like a fantastic setup! I've loved my 12-45 dearly, but I'm actually thinking about selling it right now to fund more primes. I did buy the 17mm f/1.8 just yesterday. Unfortunately, it's not weather-sealed, which makes me hesitant to let go of the 12-45. How did you find the color rendering on the 17 f/1.8? Wishing you the best for 2025, and thank you so much for the kind words-it really means a lot. Cheers, Jimmy

Glad you are enjoying the 20mm. Thinking I may have been the one who influenced you a little 😂. I got the 12mm last week. Don’t ask me how good it is 😜 I have the pro 17mm and it’s my favorite lens of all time from any brand. It’s that good.

MMMmm, you definitely helped spark a new addiction-primes! Now, every time I head out with my camera, I’m thinking in primes. 😂 Just today, I picked up the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 (non-pro). Got it for around $180 USD (2000 SEK). I know the pro version is amazing, but the size just isn’t my thing. I also considered some manual options like the TTArtisan 17mm or the newer Yongnuo 17mm, but they felt a bit too bulky for what I prefer. This little Olympus seems like the perfect size 😊 You got any experiences with this lens?-Fail or Win 😅

@ I didn’t like the 17mm 1.8. It felt like the camera had to do a lot of in camera corrections maybe? Something just felt off with the rendering I couldn’t put into words. Maybe it’s just me? I think your 20mm gives better rendering by far. But I’m telling you, you get that 17mm pro you will get used to the extra size. It’s just plain worth it with its lovely rendering. I’ve owned the laowa 6mm lens and it was excellent. But I just found I had very little use for a 6mm lens that wide. But they do make excellent lenses.
