I remember Geoff Wilson when we worked at Huyck in Breakwater. He was such an avid mulloway fisherman. He always had his small tinny on top of his Valiant sedan in the car park ready to head down to the Barwon river.

You can use a Uni knot and not cinch it up all the way. And if you use a snap, make sure that it doesn't jam sideways.

Hi mate, love your tips. I have in almost brand new condition Shimano overhead speedmaster with what looks like a yellow tiger rod. I have put 30 lb schnider line. Do you think it’s a suitable set up?😁👍💯🙏
@ShannonsFishing7 күн бұрын
The speedmaster with 30 lb line will be fine for Jewies not sure what a tiger rod is? If its a 10 to 15 kg rod it will be fine mate. Good luck with your Jewie adventures.

Qualified motorcycle mechanic and unqualified tackle serviceman here. Buy yourself a magnetic parts tray or two. They are great for repairs. And if you drop and lose a special screw, drop something similar from the same place and height and watch where it goes. It might take a couple of tries, but you'll find the lost screw very close.

Thanks for this video and appreciate that the theme of locating fish at non-traditional places. Mulloway are definite flat hunters, I have caught them when targeting big flathead under low to no light. My first "Jew Lure" (1970) was red and white feathers - sold as the river mouth lure when brown flush from rain came. Interesting that my Father's favourite lure for Murray cod in the 1930s and forties was a galah wing with a 10/0 hook wired on. Times and laws have changed, but simple can work. And I agree anything in water eats a prawn. Best of luck.

Spot on Shannon. The gold standard for modern rods is X wrap. I've got an expensive 11ft graphite surf rod that's pre X wrap, and I can feel it twist when casting a 5 oz lead and bait. It's one generation behind now. Still great but. 8000 Stradic, an old FI model, 20 lb braid, 50 lb mono leader FG knot.

Great information again mate. I run a Daiwa Spartan PE2/3 7'3 and a Certate 5000 PE2.5. Love it - balance between fun and stopping power. I love a micro jig (find them effective and something to do with 2 bait rigs out). What are your favourite Mulloway micro jigs mate?
@ShannonsFishing8 күн бұрын
Thanks for the info buddy. Its been a long while since i've chased Mulloway on jigs but by memory I used Nomad Gypsy 60 gram in the SAR colour and I put very small pink Squids over the hooks to dress it up a little.

Spot on Shannon, I've never owned a boat ,been a landlover and keen jewfisher since the 1970s . I was taught all those things but with the variation that I was fishing the beach (Stockton) , breakwalls , dykes , Hunter River river banks and Newcastle Port shore (dykes, jetties) . Being shore based the got to gear 14ft to 16ft MT or FSU 5 to 7 wrap rod + big alvey ( 600, 651 or 700 A5 or C5 , or ajax centrepin , 40# mono , and same rigs , sometimes a free swimmer under a big float that you let swim out. I like a 80# mono shock trace that the hooks are tied to .... gives a bit rock and barnicle abrasion resistance and sometime to hold ontop if I'm dragging a fish out of the water w/out the gaff. I have occasionally gone out w/ mates in their boats and we did precisely what you described , none of my mates had electric motors then , so we drifted , or we dropped anchor if tide was running hard. (as it will near Kooragang , Hexham, Carrington Coal Load, in the harbour and along the breakwalls). Can be struggling to hold bottom w/ a live bait even with an 8oz snapper lead .... !! on the full runout. In my case I was using my boat rig was my trusty old SeaScape 621 on a 6 foot boat rod which had a nice whippy tip but a powerful bottom half. Yes I used to chase kings etc w/ big minnows and popper in the 1970s (soon got tired of all the effort involved for fk all results and wized up , returned to using livebaits ). Killer baits = live yellowtail, live mullet, live little trevally, One hook between dorsel and tail in flesh of back (8/0 or 10/0 hook dep on size of bait) Fresh caught whole squid (bodies about length of your hand) on 2 big sharpened suicides (1 in head , and running snelled on hook hook in body , half hitch to help hold squid in livelike posture ) works a treat if there's a fresh on and livebait are near impossible to catch (too spooked by muddy water) or you decide to go on whim (just grab a 1/2 dozen separately frozen squid in freezer bags. I catch squid at Belmont, Swansea, Blacksmiths in avos with jigs from shore and shallows and jetties, take them home and while the spots are still flashing on/off freeze them individually in small freezer bags, the oversize squid I strip up for snapper or to make crumbed deepfries. ---- FRESHEST IS BEST when it comes to squid - if you wouldnt eat it , dont offer it to the snapper or jewfish.) Little 6 pack esky is perfect for holding 10 - 12 frozen squid , I'll often put them on the hooks while still near frozen .... They'll stay fresh all day and all night and are sometimes still fresh when I get home after fishing all night or from mid avo to dawn ( so they are refrozen for next time ). Typically if the gents in grey show up or the eel pikes .... I call it a night. Same if the hairtails show up ---- they'll knick your livebaits in no time , and make a mess of the line too. Livebait is too much effort to throw at rubbish fish. Find a spot near structure and close to deep water (but deep is not 100% mandatory) Lob out Lay the rod on ground with a slight lift of tip (so you can see any movement - a live bait will tell ya when something is scaring it, set the drag , but put the reel on freespool w/ cricker on, and sit next the rod and BE QUIET . 9 time out of 10 the jewfish will take the bait and you wont see a screaming run , but it does happen and with a alvey in freespool that means an overrun tangle if it changes speed or direction (sometimes they'll will swim to you and suddenly the line is limp and threatening to get caught up on rocks under the tip) so I keep my hand resting next to the reel and if the line starts getting pulled out I'm ready to apply the slight retarding pressure to the lip of the alvey spool to slow it will not enough to spook the jewfish who might have the bait in it's mouth. I'll slowly lift the tip of the rod was the fish pulls line out and when I think it's got the bait its mouth only then will throw the antireverse level and engage the drag ,that's when things get interesting ..... Also taught never be in a hurry to set the hook (old expert jewfishers in 1960s and 1970s told me this and I used to watch them and talk to them , the BIGGEST LESSON they taught me = a needle sharp hook is the magic thing here ==> fish WILL HOOK ITSELF , but often it's a hookup in the lips ..... lot of jewfish runs lost by overzealous fishers trying to pull the head off the fish when setting the hook or by them pumping scull dragging the fish .... lip skin breaks = say goodbye to your fish. As a rule - if there are lots of pple fishing near where I want to fish (on the shore, or nearby (inside cast range) in boat - I go somewhere else less noisy and where I'm not going have drips casting over me. This is why I like Nobbys BW so much over Stockton .... fewer pple fish there overnight , fewer boats fishing the channel dropoff , plus in summer the wind / breeze tends to be at you back and you can get down to the water on the channel side to gaff the big fish more safely (than at Stockton BW) , and if there's a strong S wind you can get into sheltered spots in the wall's windshadow. I'm not into jigging for jewfish either .... looks like too much effort and sfa return for it for me. Nor am into catch and release after taking a photo for bragging rights ..... I catch fish to eat them. That said w/ bag limits the way they have been in last couple of decades - I dont think I can justify buying a boat to chase snapper and jewfish (would have to have a 1/2 cabin to be comfortable and stay out of the rain and wind .... with price of petrol ..... not worth it IMO.

Interesting you mention the oceans legacy rods. I recently got an oceans legacy 7ft baitcast rod loaded with 30lb braid. It is a really fun jewie rod although i mostly catch schoolies up to a metre. It handles 4-7 inch plastics with 1/2 oz jig heads with ease and feels like a real step up from the blades n tails i was using. For soaking livies underneath the boat, i like my old Abu (270m of 20lb) on a short c stick glass rod. Seems to absorb the headshakes well and can handle being folded under the boat if the fish swims in the wrong direction and i dare say your jig rod handles similar. I can’t cast that rod to save my life though but i like the loud clicker/smooth drag on the abu and its a comfy setup to fight fish with.

Frozen worms are absolute garbage these days. They're coloured with dye, stink like metho and are unattractive to fish. The old salted frozen one's, were mostly a bit soft, but they worked.

@ShannonsFishing16 күн бұрын
Hi Ty. 150 pound multi strand will be fine for Wahoo. Crimp size won't matter with light tackle 24kg and under. Large and small crimps will both hold if crimped properly.
