The Bridgewater canal although may not be the first canal in the UK it is the first purpose built man made canal as all the rest actually followed other natural waterways but were made navigable.

What a Fabulous Video Paul. I never knew that about the water in the mines and the lift system. And I never knew that it wasn’t Actually the first Canal/water navigation ever made. I spent the first 20 years working for the then NCB and I’ve spent the last 20 years cruising the canals. I often explore areas where old coal mines existed whilst out on the cut. You won’t find many old pit head sites but you can find the remnants of spoil heaps where all the waste was deposited. Happy belated Birthday!

I can hear you groanin" now ! except that I was born nearly 20 years earlier than you ! I thought I"d be able to catch you out with the Sankey Brook Canal, {in MY home town }, which was opened in 1757, and beat the the Bridgewater, by 4 years, in 1761 ! It's still there as a Woodlands walk ! {Tiller People Vlog "bout 2 years ago} The Sankey Canal, was built to carry coal from St. Helens, to Liverpool, { 12 miles as the Pidgeon flies } ! The Bridgewater, to carry coal to Manchester, ! We held the {Dubious !} Record in the "50's of being the most POLLUTED town in the Country. What with the Pilkington Glassworks and the Coal mines, we had 83 Chimneys belching smoke, Well done ''Daddy"" Warbucks ! you get to adopt Annie ! Will she fit onto the Boat ? Still The Sun'll come out termorrer, Betcha bottom dollar, that it will ! Have a Fab time with Annie ! I'll sing along with you ! When you go on your hols, get to Cambodia and see Angkor Wat ! A nice relaxing cruise through the Bridgewater canal ! One of James Brindley"s new ideas of getting rid of all the curving round the contours ! Good Job, that his Employer, the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, { Francis Egerton, }, had a few bob to spare ! He didn't quite anticipate the Trafford Centre, would be coming along, so soon ! It seems that everybody is going over the Mersey . First, Heidi, and then Vanessa, { The Mindful Narrowboat }, have just had their boat's seaworthiness certificates OK"d for passage down the Mersey ! I’m sure that this was an extremely unfortunate accident whereas the water companies know exactly what they’re doing. Sad thing is the companies will make their customers (us) pay the fines and carry on regardless.

What on earth do you put into the water to counteract the effect of the spill? Is there anything which can be added to contaminated water to cleanse it? Or is it just adding straight H2○ to existing situation to dilute it out? And what can be done to ensure that it never happens again?

That’s a great piece and yes I agree with you with the help that the crt do need. I may not be a boater but I lived along side the Lancaster canal my whole life and regularly cycle, run, fish and commute along. We’ve just had a breach of the towpath after a tree went over and tore out the banks above another water course. It dropped the water level by over a foot…nearly forty miles. The crt have had a massive task to fix this as a huge logistical nightmare ensued to prevent further water loss. It must drain the limited the finances with just a handful of these incidents over a year.

Such a shame this accident has happened but at least it’s been caught before it spread even further. Thanks for filming where it is as best you can. I’ve fished along there a lot over the years and my canal pb pike comes from the open section of basin. It was a real shame seeing the dead fish, especially the big pike. The donated money will not sit right with a lot of people I’m sure but at least there’s some money immediately to help the situation. Hopefully, whatever is done the wildlife can bounce back. I know it’s very urbanised but there are some beautiful sections as you know.
