Magnetic north has been on the move for the last 100 years. Earths magnetic field will flip in the next 40 years.

Your instructional visual aids gives the best presentation on compass I’ve seen to date. Although your video was made 11 years ago, and I’m pretty familiar with adjusting for declination, I loved it!

Has the declination changed enough to make a difference on older maps. I know it is shifting.

Holy crap. I've watched 50 videos on this subject and remained lost. You succinctly described everything in a comprehensible way.

I have to say that I have not seen anyone explaining declination as good as you have, not to mention that lines-on-the-map "trick" awesome! Thank you.

Thank you for your video. I’m trying to implement this in my backyard in Houston, Texas, attaching the top of the tarp to the 6-1/2’ wooden fence and the bottom to the two T posts. I’m having trouble sourcing the T posts with the attached tabs. Do you mind telling me where you bought yours? I can probably figure out a way to lash the bottom two corners to the stakes but in a storm and potentially in the dark, would like a hassle free installation, since I’m doing this by myself. My Great Dane doesn’t like to get her hair wet and will be indoors telepathically sending me moral support. I’m opting to use the fence for the high side so my yard guy only has 2 posts to work around. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’ve looked at several videos along these lines and yours far surpassed the others.

After adapting due to declination it would help if the example takes that explanation one step further and translate it to the direction of travel, explaning the differences between taken MD into account and when not. Second, maps very often have map grid on it iso GN. Maybe not in USA.

I didn't read through the comments, but here is another way to remember if you need to add or subtract. Reading the Declination Dia from Left to Right, going from Grid to Magnetic or Magnetic to Grid, we read it like this Grid to Magnetic (Greater to Minor = Subtract); Magnetic to Grid (Minor to Greater = Add). Logically if you are moving from a higher to lower, you are obviously losing counts or subtracting, and it's the opposite if you are going from Lower to Higher. I hope this help some folks out there... (US Army, SSG-54B30).

An Aussie from Down-Under here, and I've been observing the deviations of the North Magnetic Pole for nearly 2 years now. Over this time, my observations had mainly been almost daily rocking back and forth 2 or 3 degrees West than back East of True North. But then, a few weeks ago, in ONE DAY, the North Magnetic Pole SHIFTED a full 11Degrees to the West of True North - and STAYED THERE! My son in Vancouver, Canada, has NOT noted any movement in his Compass and this is consistent with the fact that from his location, the North Magnetic Pole IS actually moving away from Canada in a 'Northerly' direction, thus it's movement can't be tracked from his location. BTW: the Southern Magnetic Pole has currently left Antarctica and is now moving in a NW direction towards the Indian Ocean. We live in interesting times!

Great video! My only concern is that declination changes. For some reason it’s speeding up. What might be 5 degrees this year might be 8 degrees in 4 years. If you don’t mind buying new maps every now and again, that’s no big deal. It’s something to be aware of though.

What kind of tarp should one use to not be toxic (for the use of showers and dish washing in an RV) ?And, any tips for winter time? We will be roughing it in an RV for the winter where we get a lot of snow. I'm wondering how to melt and use it and keep from freezing, if you have any tips. Great video- I will be trying this ASAP!

Run 2 heavy chains from back corner stakes to buckets to hold your green sheet from flapping. Tie your rock to the end of one. A triangle tarp and one chain might work ok too. Good job.

Verry clear explanation, but what about 1. aligning the rule with the magnetic declination at the bottom of the map gives error. 2. drawing all other lines gives cumulation error. 3. declination changes over the years so you have to erase the lines and draw new ones.
@libbyd10015 ай бұрын
Exactly. I'd rather do the quick and relatively simple math each time, not mark up my map and have it be wrong over time as the declination changes - and it's been changing at an accelerated rate in recent years, at least where I hike.

It's been 55 years since I was a young Marine Infantry Officer running patrols in the mountains along the border with Laos in I Corps. I don't get out in the bush any more but i was driven to rehash my map and compass technique and I vaguely remembered the techniques taught by this former Marine. Anyone thinking about hiking in the woods should watch this video. This stuff saved my life in the Ashau Valley when i ran patrols back in "69". Semper Fi !
