Oh, really odd quirk with this game: if you get a Game Over, while you don't lose any level clear progress, you WILL lose all the Golden Coins you collected and have to go fight the bosses again to get them back, which is kinda punishing for what is, as you mentioned, otherwise a pretty chill experience. For me, for whatever reason (probably nostalgia, as I didn't play this title until I was like in my early 20s) this game, while great, just doesn't hit for me like Mario Land 1 or Wario Land.

The N&B Blocks are actually an old Nintendo product, "inspired" by Lego, and from _before_ they began making video games. Super Mario Land 2, like Link's Awakening, always made me wonder what another 8-bit entry into the Mario (or Zelda) series could have accomplished on the NES, given what they accomplished on the Game Boy.
@ExploDjinn5 күн бұрын
Seeing the Gordos in the submarine did make me think of Link's Awakening, since those were enemies from another Nintendo franchise. That both of them were so weird makes me kind of think that they were more comfortable experimenting on the Gameboy in which case might be why we didn't get anything like this on the NES.
@KamisamanoOtaku4 күн бұрын
@ExploDjinn At least for Link's Awakening, it was because the game was originally an unauthorized project. Dunno about SML2. I played this last year and it was a very lovely surprise and I actually liked the final level. I had heard it was super hard but it wasn't as bad as I thought and I was a little worried it would hurt my opinion of the game but not really. It was long enough to feel epic without being too long and everything felt easy enough to see where you had to go to avoid damage even if it's kinda cheap at first but I've seen way worse in that department. Also I think if you keep pressing the jump button in the air with the bunny ears then you stay in the air I bit longer than just holding

Pretty good overview! As awesome as this game is, I never felt attached to it, despite short and sweet games being just my thing. Though, I'm also the kid who thinks mario world is (slightly) overrated, so my opinion is invalid by default. Regardless, I think everyone agrees that this game's best blessing was paving the way for Wario Land... and by extension... Pizza Tower...? That sounds wierd at first but when you think about it, Mario paved the way for just about every platformer out there, really, which is probably why I never felt attached to any Mario game before; they all feel like "betas" or "prototypes" of the fully fledged platformers I know and love... Not that Mario games feel unpolished or incomplete, but they don't have that same "pizzazz" you see in other games, so they feel sort of... basic. I don't know, it's really difficult to describe without making weird comparisons, so maybe I'm just tripping. Also, the way you said "very enthusiastic" made me wish for a 10 hour daddy ExploDjinn ASMR... or revoicing an entire Mario game with your amazing impression of Mario Pretty please...?

Up until then, I always thought, why not play a platformer with a hook, like Mega Man, Sonic or, now that you mention it, Wario, so I get what you're saying. Also, not really an ASMR guy and I assume you're joking, but if there's ever enough demand...

I'll just use the video as a guide for what I wanna say. ;) @0:35 That's what I was hoping for, though I "expected" Nintendo to be Nintendo. That they would _mostly_ do that, *but* also they'd leave out and/or include something I couldn't believe. Roll 3d6 and consult the chart on page B560-561 for how I'd actually _feel_ about those surprises. @1:27 Well, you know what they say: *"YOGA FIRE!"* @2:01 I don't think you discussed this later, so here will do. One of the alleged leaks suggested at least one JoyCon (maybe both) would have the necessary sensor to function as an optical mouse. At first I was like "Why?", but then I'm like "Right. I'm on the couch, so can't use a touch screen to navigate various menus... but something functioning like a computer mouse would be handy." @2:30 Not 100% certain, but based on thumbnails, it is at least different enough it _could_ be Mario Kart 9. Too different to just be how Mario Kart 8 runs on the Switch 2. *However,* just now I also flashed back to how often we're shown *tech demos* and not _actual_ games. Like how we were shocked by Wind Waker because of the 2000 Space World Game Cube tech demo that featured Link and Ganon dueling... and looked more like upgraded or slightly reimagined versions of the OoT characters. @2:54 To remind me of my own goofs, I actually _missed_ the launch date in the demo. *Somehow.* I'm thinking I was distracted, perhaps grabbing my phone to look up the Switch 2 Trailer there, so it'd be easier to text the link to my nephews. @2:55 (ish) I'm believe this is more like the Game Boy to Game Boy Color. Seems pretty clear that this is a full-on sequel console, as *opposed* to a new Switch in the vein of the DS to DS Lite or DSi. Hence calling it the Switch 2, not Switch 1.5 or something like that. *If you're unfamiliar with the Game Boy to Game Boy Color era,* The GBC was mostly (if not entirely) backwards compatible with the Game Boy. Because they went to the trouble of using the same technology and same style of game cartridge to allow that. There were *two* kinds of Game Boy Color game cartridges: Type A (Dual Mode) and Type B (uh... normal?). Type B are _true_ GBC exclusive cartridges, at least at the time they released. Type A, which you would _expect_ to be the default, were actually designed to contain two versions of the game: the GBC version, *but also* a version that could run on the Game Boy and its various iterations (Pocket, Light, etc.). So *no, I don't think Switch 2 games will be intended to run **_at all_** on the Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED.* "Intended" because fans may find a way, or some developers may even go out of their way to add such functionality. I'll keep going in a reply to my own comment. Even if I'm not at the max yet, might help to have them match up section by section.
@KamisamanoOtaku13 күн бұрын
@4:00 Don't have one myself, but I've played a _lot_ on my nephews' Switch. I don't think they ever bothered, but there are dongles so you can plug multiple, unofficial accessories at once. At least, that's what a video I watched earlier today claimed. XD Even if the extra port is just intended for orientation purposes of a single, official peripheral, still appreciate. As is the fact that a standard headphone jack is still there. While even I have multiple pairs of relatively inexpensive, wireless blue tooth headphone... sometimes you just want something simple, durable, and cheap enough it isn't a huge blow when you lose/damage it on the go. Since the Switch 2 is still doubling as a portable, seems relevant. @4:30 Having noticed my nephews' (regular) Switch missing its kickstand, a more robust model is appreciated. Might be nice if you could intentionally remove some or all of it. Or maybe it is a bad idea. Not sure what is worth, having a kickstand break off (and sometimes get in the way), versus a removable one you could lose? @5:19 Besides covering Nintendo in case something they expect to work _doesn't,_ *remember Labo.* Oh, and isn't there some kind of AR Mario Kart "game" out there, that you'd get when buying some kinda remote controlled Mario Kart "toy" that has a camera so you can actually play as if you were in the driver's seat? I'm betting those are the kinds of things that won't work in it. Maybe some third party stuff as well. Or stuff that used a feature that didn't carry over. No one has told me whether or not it looks like the Switch 2 has the sensor _thingy_ needed for Amiibos... @5:54 I more or less agree. I was _not_ hoping for the Super Switch, but it reports suggest that some folks back in the day *were* confused by the NES/Super NES naming scheme. I mean, long _before_ the SNES was released, lots of games and peripherals for the NES had "Super" in their titles. I mean, notice how we got "Super Metroid" on the SNES, but since "Super Mario" series _already_ have "Super" in the name, they called their SNES debut game "Super Mario _World_ ". Oh, and "Land" has already been taken by the Super Mario _Land_ series on the Game Boy. XD And the confusion was even worse for the Wii/WiiU. Around half of adults own smartphones back then, and _most_ were online in some capacity. Yet the brand confusion seemed _worse_ than the NES/SNES debacle. The SNES released in Japan in (late) 1990, and in the USA it released in 1991. I went to see what Pew Research said about how many Americans had home internet back then... but the record I found with a quick web search only goes back to the year 2000. Not sure how well my experience represents things, but the first time a school I attended actually assigned me an email for me to use was in college... which was indeed in the year 2000. @6:11 I'm something of an anti-Sony "fanboy", but even I have to give them credit; just slapping a number to the PlayStation name is _boring,_ but it is also _super-effective._ Slapping "Portable" on for their first handheld was _also_ good. I had to another web search to confirm that the PlayStation Vita was indeed the name of their second handheld, because it sounds more like their take on Nintendo's abandoned "Vitality Sensor" for the Wii. Speaking of which, just a reminder that calling the follow-up to the Wii the "WiiU" wasn't just bad because it was trying to be cutesy (We and you), but because *Wii was a bad name.* Nintendo projects have always (or almost always) had codenames in development, and the Wii's was the Revolution. A name it would have lived up to, for better and worse. I still wonder if no one told them that their name sounds like childish slang for urination... And yeah, Microsoft. They're bad at naming. I mean, X Box is/was a _great_ name. Maybe not now, but it was very 90s/00s. Almost literally what I would have named a video game console. Also why, even if I don't like it, I at least _get_ why Elon Musk changed Twitter to "X". He'd have been in his 20s during the 90s e.g. when calling something "X" would have been super trendy... *Back on topic:* I had to be reminded by a video earlier that it goes X Box => X Box 360 => X Box One => X Box Series S (and X). I *still* had to do another web search because "S" and "X" sound so similar (with my hearing, at least). I wasn't sure if it they were what I vaguely remembered (S is the budget version, X is the real thing). And that they were the console's actual names and *not* some just their model/iteration. Like, they could be the X Box Two for all I know, available as Series S and Series X. >.>

@7:28 Nintendo does - or maybe _did?_ - sell an official Joy-Con Charging Dock. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I seem to recall the _official_ one (not the 3rd party versions) releasing oddly late in the Switch's life. Which led to speculation that the Switch 2 was on the way, could _use_ the old Joy-Cons *but* not charge them. So... there's hope, at least, that the old Joy-Cons will at least be _partially_ compatible with the Switch 2. @7:50 Think I said before that I don't have a Switch of my own (finance issues), but *have* played my nephews' Switch a lot (and their Switch Lite a little). I haven't had to mess with memory cards at all for the console *but even I want there to be more than one slot for them.* Just from general technological experience. Unfortunately, general Nintendo (and going all the way back to audio cassette tapes) experiences make me think it unlikely, in case it made pirating easier... which it might not. I don't know the technology involved _that_ well. @8:00 Again, agree strong enough to justify the comment. I've actually _used_ that shop, again for my nephews. Purchased a game or two, got them as much of the DLC for Smash Bros. Ultimate as I could afford, and also snagged the Mario Kart 8 DLC as an early (November) Christmas present. Shortly before their Switch stopped working around _actual_ Christmas. >_< @9:07 I've heard talk it'll be around PS4/X Box One in terms of what it can do, *except portable.* People disappointed by the first part of that sentence tend to neglect the latter. Yes, the Switch is _both_ a portable and a home console, but that means the constraints of *both* often apply, not whichever is more convenient. Plus, while there's a difference between generations of hardware we're at a stage where it isn't so... dramatic. Y'know, like NES to SNES, let alone SNES to PS1 to N64 to Game Cube and *yes,* I know I tossed a Sony console in there, but even Nintendo wanted to skip ahead.
@KamisamanoOtaku13 күн бұрын
@9:59 Yes, people want to see the games. But this isn't like the PS5 versus the PS5 Pro. Nintendo picks and chooses when to show off their next generation titles. Tech demos are - or at least were - pretty normal. Though maybe the misunderstanding I mentioned earlier means they've been avoiding it? I certainly *want* to see what they'll do, but the Switch has such a strong library, and at least Nintendo customers are used to (if not almost wanting) dual launches of the last big Switch games. As in, a Switch version and an (allegedly) enhanced Switch 2 Port. Like Twilight Princess with the Game Cube and Wii. Which you go onto say; I just only "mostly" agreed with you. XP And yeah, I think the leaks forced the Switch 2 Launch Trailer to be earlier (and thus smaller) than originally planned. @12:28 Yeah, Rockman Taisen. Since rumors had it as a "fighting game", which we've always expected but never actually received for the Blue Bomber, I'd like to at least get some details about it, even if it was canceled. Then again, I'm the weirdo who has some sort of Final Fight/Mega Man amalgam that lives rent free in my head, and has for almost a decade now... ...and yeah, *in general* something new for Mega Man would be appreciated. A friend of mind was (rightly) pointing out how long it has been, when Capcom _said_ they had something in the works for him that was - presumably - *not* the last batch of Collections or Mega Man X-Dive Offline. I'll resist the urge to be a dork and make an all-but-empty follow-up post for the brief ending section. ;)

I heard Arlo talk about the mouse thing, but since it wasn't something I thought of on my own, I didn't want to just yoink the idea from him. And I think the date's actually for a Direct, though I originally confused it for a launch date as well. I had various Gameboys, the DS was just fresher in my mind. Labo and Ringfit were the names I heard tossed around for the compatibility issue, so I think a lot of people are on the same page, and I even got confused with the Wii U thing, and I'm a Nintendo fanboy. As for the games, one of the nice things about Nintendo is, even if you don't know what they're working on, you never have to worry about whether they'll have a strong library of exclusives.
@KamisamanoOtaku12 күн бұрын
@ExploDjinn Ah, the date is probably a direct. At least one video game KZbinr I watch who thought it was the launch date as well, suggested it was because Nintendo timed it to bolster the fiscal year numbers. As for the mouse thing, I don't think it originated from Arlo, but I could be wrong. I watch most of his stuff, but not all of it. I think I got it from someone who just showed up in my feed, and they talked like it was general speculation from the leaks. And that the animation of the skittering Jor-Cons was a nod to it. Personally, I really hope Megaman 12, if it happens, does have someone besides Wily as the final boss, but have it set up like it's gonna be similar to 4 through 6. The lack of twist is the twist! The Big Eyes and their ilk are probably my least favorite overall, but the original ones from the first game are insane. Like, a third of your health because you didn't guess the jump arc RNG... yeah, Fujiwara definitely worked in this game LOL

I actually kind of like Wily as the villain every time, since it kind of gives the series a Saturday morning cartoon vibe, though I do hope they do something big with Lumine, if we ever get an X9. As long as the gameplay's good, though, I won't complain.

@mortarman8309519 күн бұрын
"what if your mother calls you to dinner" is a wild excuse lol. Anyway, I don't think any of these are that bad, jusst sometimes poorly executed. Big Eye can always be negated with *some* weapon in Rock's kit like ice slasher/spark shock, which I'd say is the best use of these weapons outside of boss weaknesses also. I've never personally had trouble with him and would worst case scenario just need a well timed slide to get past him. The bike was already perfect in X2 pretty much, it's just that the next games messed it up by trying to make it stand out (which I appreciate but it just didn't work). Spikes are actually awesome imo (as long as they're not overused), as they allow for some really interesting speed strats at times where you abuse i-frames to get through a section faster. It's what you said, they're a rule you can bend. I don't see the issue with double fortresses personally, it's just more content and it's always foreshadowed amyway by the mere fact that the first fortress is never Wily, yet you know for a fact that it's Wily you fight at the end, so if MM12 had an antagonist other than Wily at first, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to see a second fortress, so idk about you personally. It's the same reason why you always know you haven't beaten an X game until you get to Sigma (well, most of the time anyway). I thought it was pretty obvious but guess not... though I get it if someone thinks one fortress is enough for a Megaman game. I personally don't mind either options, as my favorite Megaman (MM&B) has one fortress anyway. Dropping platforms is the one hazard I just can't understand. Seriously, everything else you mentioned I can see the downsides to it, but not this one. Is a set of well timed jumps really that off putting? Honestly, I'm gonna sound completely crazy by saying this, but I feel like Megamaan fans generally wished the games were easier... dare I say they have a... skill issue? (Throwback to one of your older videos). But seriously, a lot of things Megaman fans commonly complain about are things that I'd never think of as poorly designed obstacles and just minor difficulty spikes (pun not intended). Its really weird to me because usually people who love this sub genre (if you can call it that) are usually pretty hardcore gamers who like having their asses handed to them, yet Megaman is an exceptional case where the game is just easy enough to attract casuals, but just hard enough to make people despise the difficulty. It's really interesting what kind of audience Megaman has gathered over the years. Sorry if my hypothesis sounds insane, but I just couldn't help but notice it time and time again. Anyway, great video as always!
@ExploDjinn19 күн бұрын
I think the Cossack and Proto Man fake out probably did get a lot of people when the games first came out, but them being retro makes it pretty obvious these days. The drop platforms just feel like a little much for a regular stage, especially one that could be the first Mega Man level someone ever plays. I also did a lot of runs of Powered Up around the time I did the previous video and the longer ones in the final stage are really infuriating, though hey, at least they saved those for the end.
@mortarman8309518 күн бұрын
@@ExploDjinn the sad reality is that Megaman just isn't beginner friendly, it's an investment game where you get better at it over time, and not something to breeze through like say Kirby, so if we were to point out everything that isn't beginner friendly in the series, we'd be here for a while. Of course, that's not to say it shouldn't be beginner friendly, but to only select a few examples of a greater issue within Megaman's design philosophy (that is limited resources mixed in with trial and error) feels somewhat unfair to me. But who knows, maybe I'm tripping and we really should just make drop platforms easier to ride, or ideally, keep them for optional areas with extra items only... which would probably be the best way to use them now that I think about it.
@Axington-wv4gd19 күн бұрын
Something the series could do in the future if we want multi phase bosses is just tie the phase transitions to certain points on their healthbar instead of giving them separate healthbars. It wouldn't work for every boss, but it's an option that could cut down on people feeling faked out when they thought they'd won.
@ExploDjinn19 күн бұрын
I think Mega Man's established the two stage thing enough that it's fine, but other games do the same health bar thing and it works. Not opposed to either, I'd just rather Mega Man stay the course, because I'm very easily confused.

These games are terribly unfair. I can't understand how some people defend them... Many hazards must be foreseen and pixel-perfectly addressed in order to avoid dying in 3 hits every 10 seconds. Which human plays like this? I want to play them and get them over with, but only with the NSO emulator features it is somehow possible, rewinding and saving states every 5 seconds. Starting with the 2nd one, you can feel they decided to tone things down properly, and it's a little more playable this time around. I didn't have to use the emulator features as many times as I did on the first game. Currently finishing the 3rd one in the marathon, and I will soon say goodbye to these trash games forever.

II's the only one made by a different company. For what it's worth, I think III's by far the worst, though a lot of people, myself included, do like IV and V. Hope you can have some fun with them, at least, though I won't deny that they still have some of the malarkey included.

Replaying the series. X4 plot really makes x and zero the bad guy.

I loved the first half of the X series which is why I never bothered to buy the X collection vol2 lol

Fair point about bosses having WAY too many I-frames in X2 but you gotta give it a few more points for that insanely epic intro stage. Such an insane follow up to, yeah, probably the best entry in X1.

Sounds like a lack of empathy. I'm reminded of 'Gaming for a Non-Gamer,' a great video where a gamer's wife tries playing video games for the first time, without coaching or help, and he's very surprised by her reactions. The things she has trouble with are often things he takes for granted as common knowledge. It truly is surprising how often games fail to truly educate about competent gameplay. A fighting game may have a list of special moves but it doesn't teach you about how combos work or knockdown states, etc. I personally struggle with most 3D games that involve puzzles or navigating large areas. It all looks the same to me and I just get lost constantly. I have trouble discerning what is interactable and what is just part of the environment. That's why I prefer 2D games. I don't know what causes this, but its caused me to avoid a ton of titles. There's a few exceptions, like Shadow of the Colossus with its sword guiding the way.

Played Mario Party with my mom recently and we had to constantly remind her to push A to advance stuff, and I once watched a friend slam through a rhythm game I could barely beat a level in. Different people are good at different things, which I don't get why it's so crazy to acknowledge.
