the dark universe is a depressing outcome; at that point, surely the creators of the simulation reboot the machine and start again?

Just started watching your videos. I've struck gold. Thank you for creating videos that are informative, visually beautiful, superbly written, perfectly paced and oddly soothing. I appreciate having something to watch that doesn't make me feel dumber for having watched it and mad at myself for having squandered my time. Carl Sagan's legacy lives on.

But we cannot say a black hole is denser than a neutron star because we don't know what space matter is occupying inside the black hole. Is that correct?

"Does the universe exist without us?" Like "Does a tree falling in a forest make a sound if nothing is around to detect that sound?" Well, yeah, it _does_ cause a percussive wave through the gas around it (the atmosphere); if 'sounds' means 'something perceived by a brain' then no, there's nothing to perceive that percussive wave as sound. But then again, if I left a blaring sound system playing music at high volume in the middle of the same forest, and then removed all brains from the vicinity again, that thing's gonna carry on pushing out 'those percussive waves' which some would call 'sound waves'. So it all depends on what we mean by 'sound'. The universe according to me and you is modelled within me and you: we're sensing it through our 5 senses, causing electric signals to travel into our brain, and being decoded into a perception called 'the universe': this is our lived experience, our consciousness of what's going on around and within us; our internally controlled hallucination; the phenomenology of our neurology. And your experience is yours, and mine is mine. So in that sense, there are two 'inner universes': mine, and yours. And the same for all the other 8bn living humans. And if we count all species, goodness knows how many 'inner universes' that would be. If our planet suddenly ceased to exist tomorrow including all life on it, I'm sure our galaxy and our nearest galaxy Andromeda would still go on doing their thing, as would the entire cosmos: it was doing its thing before we emerged to experience and perceive it; and it'll go on doing its thing long after we've ceased to exist to perceive and experience it. "It is", "we are", and that's that.
