Good question 😜 I have plans, but no budget, so not very soon. I’m thinking about the oto boum for saturation and an analogue filter after the YC61 or 707 drums. And I want to add something that does samples better than the 707. Not sure what it will be. Maybe an MPC, or a 404 or maybe something experimental like the torso ts4

I tried Erica Synths Basseline, good sound and tone modulation hands-on functions, but it's a PITA when it comes to Midi. It can only receive notes and CutOff, but the CutOff is not consistent and would not be manually responsive when changing sequence for example. This drove me crazy. But it sounds great as is and I don't think there's the C4 limit either. Then there's the Dreadbox Erebus and Hades. Both reissued for more quality and functionalities. Both semi-modular which is cool (Erebus has more possibilities in that regard). I personally didn't like the filter. Even if you can get a fat bass sound with both, the filters sounds thin and not too precise (for my taste). I also not a fan of 1/8" jack midi connection; the original Erebus had 5pin Din connectors but they scrapped it). Finally, I worked a lot with the Arturia MiniBrute 2S, which is very good. Its downside is the tuning. Even if I frequently verify the calibration, this instrument needs to be longly warmed up, and the time needed became longer by the years. That means you must have a tuner with it if you want to play with other musicians / instruments more precise. It is also a big bulky chunk on your table. I had it in several live setup and I just can't work with it anymore. So yeah the Minitaur has its downsides too, but they don't bother me at all. It is a solid piece of gear and it is fully Midi / CV / Gate compliant. I just love it. My 2¢.

But I get a machine mk3 and Lost in confusion how To handle that 😂... Now I think the same will be with the 707,because I am more a Keyboard Player than a pad Player... But I like to have an Instrument that didnt need a Computer and sounds great...
@tricks-and-tips
@tricks-and-tips 23 күн бұрын
Thanks man. I mainly use my midi controller (with regular keys) to play the 707. But for this review, I wanted to play the pads instead. Usually I only use the pads for drums (which is where they shine for me). And on stage, when I'm doing simple bass lines, the pads are ok. I fold the pads to a specific key and scale, so I get 2 octaves and then I'm a happy camper because this thing is super small and can deliver quite good basses. (usually I'm doing either sub bass patches or arps on stage) And regarding learning this thing, I feel all these grooveboxes have a big learning curve and if you 'fight against it', by trying to let them do things 'your' way, you will be having a hard time. I almost got rid of the 707 when I wanted it to do what I thought it should do. It was very frustrating. But after a couple of nights sleep, I decided to give it one more go, this time the other way around and let the 707 tell me how to make music on it. Starting small with simple loops and only one thing at a time (technique). My 2 main 'issues' adapting to the groovebox (coming from a DAW) were to let go of the long progressions and focus on the shorter (8 bars is still relatively long for a groovebox btw) and instead creating catchy shorter progressions that work well in a loop. I never did that, so that was a technique that I had troubles with, but it's the only way that works for me on a groovebox. And the next thing is that I had to focus on the quality of the few things that were playing, where I was used to 'just add one more layer' in the DAW, hiding the boring parts in a bunch of overlapping layers. Where I have only 8 tracks on the 707, I had to be careful what to do with them. So what ended up working very well for me is to let go of the idea of 'producing' and instead use it for jamming. But I'm not making short jams with just one loop. They are longer sessions (5-10 minutes) with various sections. Pre planned, but all created while jamming. And this is where I feel the 707 works best. You can use it like it's your private band where you are constantly switching roles while creating your jam and the other 'players' keep playing what you just punched in. I'm over 4 years into this yourney now and still discover new things often. Almost at project 100 and I think these are my best pieces of advice with any (complex) piece of gear: - Don't force your way on the groovebox when you get frustrated, but adapt and try new ways of making music 'with' it (instead of fighting it). - Keep it simple at first. One bar, one instrument, one type of sound generation etc. etc. It's so easy to get lost otherwise - Keep it fun and light. Don't try to produce a masterpiece. These boxes are instruments and meant to be played. And that is where the fun is for me. And when something is fun, you will be motivated to come back and get more experience, which will lead to more fun and better results and the loop to the top is born. It's usually not the gear, but the brain behind the knobs that is the 'hurdle'.

@@tricks-and-tips Thanks for this detailed answer. It definitely shows me one thing: that it's really important to you that you really deal with the 707 and don't turn away too quickly in frustration. Thanks a lot. We are over 1yr later and I'm still enjoying the Minitaur. My main gripe still stands (limited reach) but I am going to try an octave pedal someday (when I have the budget and time) to overcome that. The lack of tone shape options is somewhat compensated by adding 2 pedals to my setup. One is a cheap TubeMP Studio V3, which I overdrive like mad if I want this crunchy tone (check my last video where you can hear it in action kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKO8gXWCjdZknpY) The other one is the Deco V2, which can 'also' add a lovely stereo chorus. (and saturation) I'm not trying to convince you into buying one btw. Buy only what you need and often it's not more gear, but more time behind the knobs :) But for the 'one trick pony' part, yes it is, and yes I still use it daily.

Thanks! I think the Subsequent is more easy to use because it has a screen and a keyboard :) So you don't need anything else, maybe a reverb + delay pedal. For live situations I would probably never use the Minitaur because you can't see on what patch it is. (unless you add some midi device that can read out the patch number) And I would still have to drag a midi keyboard around to play it. Maybe (if size is an issue) the Sub25 is a good middle ground. Still the nice 3 oscillator bass sound, but not as heavy and big as the 37 :)

@tricks-and-tips
@tricks-and-tips Ай бұрын
Thanks a lot. Yeah, the Subsequent is a beast with very big dynamic range and I wish they had added some kind of compensation for that. The only hardware solution I can think off is a compressor. But not every compressor handles the immense frequency range very well (some are bad for bass for example), so my solution is to fix this in post. Which means I record everything multitrack into the DAW where I do my mixing, EQ and compression. I know, some would call it 'cheating', but for me the whole DAWLess idea is about the creative process. Not the production part. So I have a (digital) compressor on my Subsequent 37 track to tame it a little. It's not a 100% perfect solution , because I also use hardware FX pedals and if multiple synths are sent through one pedal, you lose the ability to compress the Subsequent 37 on its own. But it's not about 100% perfection for me, so I don't care. My final 'trick' is to use dynamic EQ in my DAW. So I make sure some tracks are pushing some frequencies down on other (group of) tracks. In my DAW template, I have 4 groups. 1. Drums 2. Bass 3. Music without bass 4. 2 + 3 combined (music without drums) So the drums signal is used to duck frequencies on group 4 and the bass signal is used to duck frequencies on group 3. This way I try to have a full sound while (hopefully) removing too much buildup in certain frequencies. It's not perfect, but works well for me and it combines the power of mixing in the DAW with the fun of creating music with hardware, so I like it like this. Hope that made sense :)
