language learning is so complex and the speed you learn varies so much from person to person. I'm a native English speaker living in Italy. I learnt Italian PURELY by speaking...I"m now fluent orally, can read and understand but my written Italian is a disaster...which does cause setbacks as I always have to ask for help if I need to send a formal letter etc etc. Italians LOVE grammar and in my active years of teaching it was very difficult to write or say anything without being quizzed about each word [ they do lots of analysis on sentence structure at school and carry this over to the second language] . Italians also tend to shout and gesticulate a lot ,so things said just by hand or arm movements can't be expressed in English! Personality has a lot to do with speaking, the shy students won't speak until they are sure that they have the correct pronunciation, while the more extrovert ones just "go for it" and don't care too much about how they sound...within reason! Another important factor is' reason for learning'. I had to do a course with some managers who needed English for work but had no personal motivation for learning....it was a disaster!!! learning in the classroom is very different from being in the country as you can understand so much from the context of the situation. Anyway , just really wanted to say a big thank you to the both of you for your hard work and interesting videos!

What I like about these clips is unlike so many other Portuguese language primers -- and some are very good -- you don't spend a lot of time helping us say, for instance, that our oldest cousin has gained three kilos or likes coffee more than her mother. I'm sure it will be a great thing for our younger cousins who haven't and don't, but I don't know when I'd ever need to know that. For instance in French, I can say, "My aunt's pen is on the table," but I've never been anywhere near a table with my aunt when French people nearby where wondering where her pen is. A long way of saying, thank you.

The word "prison" does not end in "SION"?

Hi, I’ve just come across your channel and think your teaching style is great 😊 May I ask, what is the difference between “Por Favor” and “Se Faz Favor” ?
@portuguesewithcarla16 күн бұрын
Thank you! 😃 Well, "Por favor" translates directly to "please" in English. "Se faz favor" translates roughly to "would you be so kind" or "if you please." However, the natives use both expressions interchangeably to make polite requests.

@portuguesewithcarla23 күн бұрын
Good catch! Marlon thanked the waiter for handing him the box. You're right, technically he should have said "Obrigado" But the truth is natives don’t worry too much about it and use both interchangeably these days 😉

@@portuguesewithcarla So, in that case how much more of this not correct? Does not make much sense in following it if a simple thank you is wrong!
@portuguesewithcarla14 күн бұрын
@@rickirene9424 I appreciate you may feel that way. In a formal setting it will be classed as “wrong”, however, one cannot expect the everyday language to be the same as the one in formal settings. In fact, these occurrences keep languages evolving. Dead languages don’t change, but I’m afraid living ones do. Now it’s up to each one whether they wish to keep up to date with the current day to day Portuguese spoken by the natives or not 😊
@KAB467612 сағат бұрын
@@rickirene9424I spoke to a Portuguese friend on all the verbs conjugations and sentence structure. I was surprised to hear, he uses the pronoun before or after the noun and not necessarily as I am learning. He also could not name all the conjugations. That made me think, I am also not following all the grammar rule in my home language (not English) So I am sure there are loads of Portuguese people that do not speak textbook correct. So good to have a heads up.
