Hi. I just discovered your channel yesterday and it is very helpful. I will be visiting Portugal next year May! I have partial Portuguese ancestry from Azores, Lisbon, and Guarda based on genetic cousin matches. I speak conversational Italian and French and I used to speak nearly fluent Spanish. I think Portuguese will be challenging but I am eager to learn! I also think I will revert to speaking Italian or Spanish if I don’t know how to say something in Portuguese. When I was in Italy I would occasionally use Spanish words as I didn’t know the word in Italian! But I was understood.
@portuguesewithcarla6 ай бұрын
Glad you like our channel 😊 it’s true that knowing other Latin based languages can make it a bit confusing as there are similarities but also significant differences that sometimes we don’t expect to find. On the other hand, it will also come in handy when learning Portuguese given the fact that some of the vocabulary is similar or the same! Also there’s many aspects in common when it comes to grammar 😀 My advice to anyone visiting Portugal is to try and speak as much Portuguese as possible (this will win you some brownie points with the natives) and any words you don’t know refer back to your other Latin based languages - it doesn’t work all the time, but it works often enough 😁 Have an amazing time in Portugal 🤗

Hi, I’ve just come across your channel and think your teaching style is great 😊 May I ask, what is the difference between “Por Favor” and “Se Faz Favor” ?
@portuguesewithcarla4 ай бұрын
Thank you! 😃 Well, "Por favor" translates directly to "please" in English. "Se faz favor" translates roughly to "would you be so kind" or "if you please." However, the natives use both expressions interchangeably to make polite requests.

Can you pls tell me the difference between desculpe and desculpa? Also, thanks a lot for the video!
@portuguesewithcarla7 ай бұрын
Desculpe you should to use with people you don’t know, older ones and in formal settings. Desculpa you can use with family, friends, children - so in informal settings. They are both forms of the Imperative Mode, but desculpe follows the the pronouns você, o senhor or a senhora which may be omitted. Desculpa follows the pronoun tu. Hope this helps 🙂

Question: Does it matter which one i choose to learn when it comes to being understood the best in both countries? In Scandinavia for instance i think it's best to pick Norwegian (even tho im Swedish) if you wanna understand all the Scandinavian languages the best.
@portuguesewithcarla2 ай бұрын
@@zoom5024 Portuguese people are more accustomed with the Brazilian accents and expressions than the Brazilians with the Portuguese accents and expressions. So for you to be understood by both countries, maybe the Brazilian variant is the best option. However, if you only focus on the Brazilian one you’ll have a hard time understanding Portugal’s Portuguese. It really is a decision you have to make - maybe consider where you’ll visit more often ☺️

Hi Carla ❤️ Could you please help with basic pronunciation? Words so simple as “a faka” “a casa” “a vaca” - which “a” should be spelled as “e” and which as “a”? I’m trying to hear it in different sources and everytime I hear something else 😂❤
@portuguesewithcarla10 ай бұрын
Olá Joanna 😊 So the first “a” in those words is an open one, like the English “ah” sound”. And the second one is the closed one - similar to the sound “uh” as in “duh “🤦🏽♀️ I’m sure you pronounce my name, Carla, that way: open “a “ first and closed “a” last. So it’s exactly the same with the 3 words you mentioned. Hope this helps 🤗
