There is a saying that " The happiness we seek is not in the absence of chaos; happiness is finding refuge in it. No other quad could drop you in the center of chaos and allow you to see what you were made of, like the Yamaha Banshee. A machine that could reach speeds of nearly 100 mph and deliver an experience like no other.
In this video, we will look back at the Yamaha Banshee and its impact on the off-road world and why Yamaha was forced to stop making this beast.

Banshees are something special, a lot of people don't realize that a Banshee won the Paris - Dakar rally in its class back in 1998. The rider, Vikus van Deventer, a farmer with an adrenaline mission finished more than a day ahead of the closest competitor!, yes you read that correctly, and the competitors had much bigger machinery! Respect.

This is both true 99.9% of the time and utterly incorrect. If it's fast and you crash it because it's unforgiving and you're not Travis Pastrana that is totally on you and always will be. If a bike is released where big bumps make the frame snap in half, that is dangerous in a fundamental way. Ridiculous example sure, just pointing out it's rarely black and white in either direction.

@@jameshealy4594 By definition, most (if not all) machines are “dangerous”. Chainsaws are in fact capable of inflicting harm, but I would NOT call a properly operated, well maintained chainsaw “dangerous” per say. Now if a company produces a saw where the chain is prone to flying off due to a design flaw, then I would call that particular type of chainsaw dangerous. The Banshee was a very capable machine, but not inherently flawed so long as the operator was equally capable. I guess all I’m saying is know your limits.

When I was a kid my dad had a Banshee. He built it, got heads, reeds, pipes, and it had to run a special high octane race gas. He sawed off the front fenders so all that was left were nubs. By the time he was done building it, I was 12, and the only time he ever let me ride it, I wasn't allowed to go above 2nd gear, because that bike was stupid fast. When I was smaller, he'd ride with me sitting on the gas tank and he'd drag race people with super built raptors and stuff and win, with me riding along. That bike was crazy. I had a slightly built blaster and there was no comparison. I'd buy a banshee over any other quad as an adult if I had the money.

2 stroke 3 wheelers and the Banshee 4 wheeler are the only non motorcycle machines I would ever consider buying. In the early 2000's when I had a Yamaha dealership we'd get one of each color which meant two and we'd pull them in and out of the shop everyday for display and at the end of the week when the oil started to drip out of the exhaust we'd fight over who would get to take them outback and clean them out. Double the fun factor in the winter when we'd race them around the building in the snow covered parking lot. Had a helluva time selling 2 every year but at least we had fun with them while we had them.

My first sport quad was a 98’ 350 Warrior in 2000, when I was about 15. We had a group of about 10 kids that got together and hit all the local spots on Saturdays in our little country town. I remember my buddy Kevin showing up one Saturday with his Dad’s brand new Banshee. I had my Warrior and thought, how much faster could it be? They’re both 350s after all lol. After much coaxing and promises that I wouldn’t crash his dad’s new baby, Kevin relented, and I hopped on that Banshee and hit it! It was a LOT faster than my Warrior. My adrenaline went through the roof as the wheels glided over the gravel road. I squeezed the throttle and my legs against the tank and sent it, leaving a trail of gravel dust a mile long. It was an absolute blast. I always loved my Warrior, but from that day forward I always had a soft spot for Banshees. I have a SxS now and meet up with family and friends for rides. A couple years ago my step brother’s friend showed up to a ride with a Banshee. I wondered if it was just my love and nostalgia for them or if they really were as fast as I remember. The dude let me take it for a little spin and it was absolutely just as much fun as I remember! I would love to find one that hasn’t been ran into the ground but it would probably be cost prohibitive at that point.

While shopping for groceries there was a Yamaha dealer on my way home. I stopped "just to take a look" I could not decide on either a banshee or YZ250, almost bought both. Pulled the trigger on banshee but still always wanted a YZ. Now in 2021 I found a 2000 Yz250 (yes 2 stroke) at a decent price and bought it. They both share garage space now.

Started my motorcycle career in 1990 at a multi line metric dealership and I uncrated and assembled and did the pre delivery service on hundreds of banshees and blasters. They sold the shit out of them probably more than any other model dirt or street. On most machines performance parts give you little gains here and there but the Banshee was instant gratification. The Blaster would get some good gains from the same mods but nothing like the Banshee. If we wanted big gains on the blaster we would take the crank out and swap the blaster connecting rod out with one off the Banshee turning it into a stroker motor.

Banshees are the king of Quads/ATVs… built from 1987- 2012 says it all. Apart from the J-arm to A-Arm upgrade after 3 years of production they only added a key and brake light over 25 yrs. it’s the greatest bar none. A bike you actually build a relationship with because shee’s alive and feels it every time you ride her 💗🤘🏻

I went from field racing a banshee and farming with a honda rancher, to one machine, a Kawasaki brute force, its big but fun, second summer i owned it i took the racks and plastic off, for a jet kit, hmf exhaust and elka shocks, it's way funner and faster than my banshee was, but I still miss my Yamaha

I worked at a dealership in the late 90s when the Banshees were in their prime. At closing time when we brought all the ATVs back into the shop for the night it was a race to see who'd get to pilot the banshee.

We used to have atv drags at the fire department. Christmas tree finish traps the whole nine yards, and banshees was by the far the biggest crowd pleasers. You ain’t seen a banshee until seeing one running on nitromethane and massive tuned pipes. Good times at Posey Fire department.

We never had a Banshee but my dad used to have a warrior and they raced in some pastures in some kind of mixed class when I was little. It sounded like they each were able to show their prowess being 2 stroke vs 4 stroke.

Respect the Banshee, especially one with Toomey T5 pipes, tuned carbs with air pod filters like my profile pic. It is a machine that DEMANDS experienced riders' attention at all time. The stock suspension isn't the best, it doesn't like to ride slow because there's no rad fan and it's always ready to rip, but if a noob is not aware of the powerband, it will definitely rip you to pieces.

My buddy had one with this set up. It was the only thing around that could run with my built ATC 250R. Every single flat field in the area had our drag racing shred marks permanently etched into them. Boy I miss the 90s,early 2000s.

I had a Banshee and I loved it. If you knew how to handle it, it was a great machine. Tight corners? No problem. Grab that front brake, a small tweek of the cheek, a little snap of the throttle, and she would corner with the best of them. I had no problem hanging with the bigger quads. Only reason I sold it, was because I have bad hands. I started having trouble holding on to the handle bars. Too many close calls of bumps yanking the bars outta my hands and almost wiping out. The guy I sold it to, rode it one time, scared him so bad he sold it. ....lol
