This is the song that alerted me to the existence of the 8-string bass when I was in high school in the 70’s. The authentically JPJ stack of amps is a nice touch!

At last someone who can get "that " sound from an Alembic on YT , by "that sound" I mean the metallic clangy sound that both Entwistle and Jones seemed to have , every other vide I have seen they just have a run of the mill kind of sound which you can get with much cheaper basses ,whats the point in having this beautiful thing if it ain`t going to sound special , lovely playing dave , lovely . btw entwistle plays an 8 string Alembic on "trick of the light " on who are you album ,as a lead instrument and has I think a gibson doing the basics
@DDbass2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind feedback, Phil. It's not hard to get that clank; Alembics do that well. It's been my experience that many Alembic users spend a lot of time trying to make them sound like other basses, which can be done but it takes some doing. Here's an example: I'm using my Exploiter to cop an aggressive P-bass tone - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp23d4Ksm62shMk
@philipchurchill65082 жыл бұрын
@@DDbass yeah great link Dave , yeah thats what I mean thats the clank alright , Entwistle seemed to have more harmonics and treble than Jones at certain times ,I believe hearing him play the alembic live was a very different experience , I dont play any intstruments but I like to know what I listen to , I like to know what wood they use for drums and like many people can tell a rickenbacker bass or six string miles away ,great song on the upload and great band

You know just today... listening to this studio track ..I don't hear 8 string BecVar at all. But seeing them live in 1977 him playing the BecVar 8 thought he must have used it on the studio cut .....But I really don't hear the octave* string rattling at all. Do you:? I love your Alembic to death btw.
@DDbass2 жыл бұрын
I do hear the octave strings on the original recording. You can totally hear it on Achilles as well. They both have a twangy-ness that jumps out once you know what you’re listening for. A trick that I have taught my daughter is to try and identify every sound you hear and then by process of elimination the thing you’re focusing on tends to jump out more.

Hi Nuno. I use D’Addario strings. Just their standard 8-string set.
That sounds great! I've been wondering, what's that black thing between the neck and bridge pickup? That isn't another pickup is it?
@DDbass3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The one in the middle is a dummy hum-canceling pickup. Although they look like soap bars, they’re actually single coil pickups so the middle guy keeps everything nice & quiet.

@David OnBass I'll hazard a ½way "wild" guess to be $12,000.00 IF it was not an ALEMBIC "standard" body shape, such as an Explorer, I would tack an extra 3,000 on to the price.
