A couple of other additions: 1. 8:32 Then there's Aronofsky's later work of "Black Swan" which is effectively "Perfect Blue". Oddly enough "Black Swan" came out the month after Satoshi Kon died-he probably would have had something to say about that one as well! 2. 11:45 The funky thing about the English dub for this one is that they actually bothered to re-record the intro theme in English! 3. 50:20 Didn't think that anyone else remembered that. 4. Gwen Stefani's solo career was touched upon at the very end, but it does go a bit deeper. The music video for No Doubt's "Ex-Girlfriend" was pretty much a recreation of a bunch of scenes from the OVA "Kite". (there are also a ton of tangential hints to Gwen's interest in anime and JP culture in several of No Doubt's videos-there's usually a random JP product somewhere in at least one of the shots). 5. Then you've got Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. Janet Jackson's video for "Doesn't Really Matter" has an aesthetic that's bits of cyberpunk like Blade Runner and 5th Element, but also what you'd imagine a futuristic, live-action anime world would look like based on anime between the late '80s and the 21st century (also featuring clips of anime and JP games on jumbo monitors in the background of some scenes). Michael and Janet Jackson feature a sci-fi aesthetic complete with clips of anime in the video for "Scream". Then there's the big one; Michael Jackson making an appearance in Space Channel 5: Part 2-a rhythm game featuring the character Ulala as an idol-like reporter.

Oh wow, the mention of t.A.t.U sent me back to when I was a closeted catholic school girl preteen who definitely got way too attached to their music back then 😂 I didn't know that anime art was official - I think I just assumed that those images I saw on livejournal back in the day were fan art. Phantom Crash owns. It's a Y2K ass feel with an eclectic ass soundtrack. One moment you'll be listening to industrial music, and suddenly you'll hear how Electric Eel shock proclaims that Rock and Roll will save the world. And then a jazz track. The combat chatter ingame seems like stream of conciousness rambling from all parties. Mech ai systems are represented real animal photos and have names like salsa. It's great. Phantom Crash is so awesome. I wish I could play it for more than 5 seconds.... Xbox 360 moment

Love Live is extremely still happening and it's been fun to watch the series evolve from significant lesbian undertones to multiple plain-as-day romance subplots that the writers are clearly invested in but are forbidden from acknowledging as canon. Like, they reached what I thought was the maximum level of plausible gay deniability in the second series and they have gone SO much further since then.

Heartcatch Precure is my favorite season btw (I think it has the most cohesive design + art direction truly making it stand apart from the rest at first look from how distinct it is + flower theme is a favorite of mine + the writing was great, the fights were awesome, what more can I say... I love to see magical girls wrestle with the baddies) but I also really recommend Go!Princess and Smile which is very silly but very good. OG season is also great and amongst recent ones, Kirakira À La Mode and Hugtto are very well liked too.
