Re-padding my third saxophone and this is a wealth of information. Mistake number one. My first job was on a Selmer Alto with Saxgormet Black RooPads. Big mistake for a beginner. It was difficult to seat the pads. I ended up removing them and used Music Medics Soft Feel domed pads with great success. A repair tech friend said the Saxgormet RooPads were very popular years ago so he bought a bunch. Now he’s sitting on boxes of them and no one is asking for them anymore.

The first horn (series II) shown looks like it has been oiled or maybe waxed? It has a certain wet look to it. Is this due to the lacquer and the lighting or was this waxed oiled or beeswaxed to protect it from further oxidation? I have a series I a that needs work but from what I heard from the dude at Get A Sax, you are very booked out?

Humans are prone to create myths about anything. One guy with a misguided opinion can start an internationally accepted myth. What factors are in play for tone qualities when the key, and pad with a resonator are closed, and the sound exits the next hole?

Matt: My old tech put kangaroo pads and Noyak (sp) resonators in my MkVI over 15 yrs ago. I play a lot, my horn is very bright, and the key heights are high. The pads are still like new! Replacements have been only the smallest pads in the upper stack. I've appreciated the longevity of the pads. What's your opinion on this and esp the Noyak boosters? I really enjoy your videos. Thanks! - Rudy 👍🎷

Just got one of these (brass) in my shop for an overhaul and I am looking forward to working on it. Looks to be from early 1950s, with original gold-plated norton springs, snap-in resonators, and original metal-backed pads. Scrollwork especially is in pristine condition with the original lacquer looking virtually flawless. I knew exactly what youtube channel to jump to when the customer dropped off this gem.
@StohrerMusicАй бұрын
Awesome! That sounds like a lot of fun. And they are a lot more fun to work on when they are in pristine condition, that key work is super stiff and geometry adjustments (like the kind that are often needed after somebody has tried to put pads that are too thick in them or something like that) are not a ton of fun. But they are a lot of fun and are really well built. Enjoy the process!

I have made this key riser for my tenor sax and it is great! Thank you so much for this video! Do you know of any saxophone cases to recommend that better accommodate taller palm keys? Unfortunately my walt Johnson case (even though I love it to death) does not have a very deep well for the palm keys. I worry that excess pressure on the palm key with the riser could bend or damage the key or instrument.

Re: pad thickness, I think a mouthpiece analogy might bring it better in focus. The difference of .025” is the difference between a 6* and a 9 tip opening for an Otto Link tenor mouthpiece. Thanks for your informative videos, Matt!

WOW!! so pretty. i recently pulled the trigger on a few vintage horns 🎉 a buffet SDA tenor and a 1925 Conn which i think might be gold plated!! the store couldn’t tell me anything about it but after some research the wear patterns indicate it was gold burnished. if you happen to see this comment i would so greatly appreciate it if i could get your opinion :)))) thanks again for sharing ur knowledge and exp <3

Super demonstration, Matt. One thing about lacquer - it doesn't oxidize, in that it changes color. If you ever delacquered a vintage horn with a nice aged patina, you realize that oxygen permiates the lacquer and oxidizes the brass underneath evenly. You must always remove the tarnished brass layer to get to shiny raw brass. Shut in the case for years it has limited oxygen to interact with - the brass under the lacquer is still bright.

Hello, I understand that the rolled tonehole and straight tonehole 10m are essentially the same aside from the tone hole. Then came those with "naked lady" engraving but with microtuner (before 1960) - are these still as good as the earlier ones?
@StohrerMusic2 ай бұрын
It is widely agreed that the later ones are not as good as the earlier ones, although they can sometimes represent a good bargain if they are in good shape and overhauled well.
@wckoek2 ай бұрын
@@StohrerMusic I see, the ones without microtuners are better I'll look for them. Rolled tone holes one are too expensive and difficult to find in good condition. Are these later (but pre 1960) ones as picky on mouthpiece? What sort of mouthpiece can be a good match for the 10m?
