Tried SDW in a day recently - took a wrong turn and got lost so didnt end up completing but still covered ~85 miles. Was riding a hardtail MTB, and I think it was the right choice (I have a gravel bike but its at the "all-road" end of the spectrum). SDW is nearly always up or down, so aero does not count for much, and is really quite a rough surface in places. Passed half a dozen gravel bikes with punctured tyres, didnt see any MTBs punctured, tyre size is important on the flint.

@@richardhorn2476 Good effort. Agree with that, a hardtail MTB is probably the ideal choice for the SDW especially if attempting it in a day!

I have a specialized diverge gravel bike with 43mm panaracer gravel Kings, also have upgraded the wheels to hunt 4 seasons wheels as the stock wheels were tish and I have to say it's probably the fastest bike I've ever owned!
