I am currently reading the book Strapless about Sargent's portrait of Madame X, so I may share some more Sargent in the future.

I've almost never seen as colorful a painting by J.S.Sargent. Practically the only black in it is the subject's hair..and doesn't he look a proper rogue!
@AmuzeArt23 сағат бұрын
This is very early in his career, when he was still trying to find his unique style. I'm reading the book Strapless by Deborah Davis at the moment, and she wonderfully describes his background and artistic ideas when and how he got the commission for this painting. Can recommend the book

Thanks for the interesting video! (And blessing my day with more Moreau). You mention unicorns even appearing in older translations of the bible. Now I wonder, what did they replace it by in newer versions?
@AmuzeArtКүн бұрын
The King James Version, for example, translates the word re'em with unicorn. This has been corrected by others, translate it by words like "wild ox", "wild bull", "buffalo" or "rhinoceros."

What is the title of the painting in 3:20, and who's responsible for it? That unicorn looks like something Dr. Seuss created after taking a tranquilizer. As for the lady --- well, if she's a virgin, she's a carefree, free-thinking one. There must be meaning connected with the things she's wearing (or not wearing), and I'd like to know more about it. Or I can just wait for Amuze to post a video called "Symbols of Virginity in Art History," heh heh!
@AmuzeArt2 күн бұрын
It's entitled The Unicorn, painted in 1885 by Gustave Moreau. This artist also has another painting about unicorns and virgins. Both are inspired by The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries in the Musée de Cluny, and apparently this virgin and the unicorn are on an island without any men.

I'm glad you pointed out the correct use of the words "seraph" and "seraphim." I was in Florence last January and just seeing Primavera, the Birth of Venus and the Madonna of the Pomegranate moved me😊. I love Botticelli, I even tried to paint Simonetta Vespucci (as Venus). Our Sandro was too fragile and those stupid words of Savonarola "potentially" took away other future masterpieces that he could have created. Don’t let fear and reproaches destroy your creativity. Let us learn this lesson from him❤

He is still seen & admired today by the public as he wished

The qualities of craftsmanship, detail, fidelity to nature, and the beauty of the human body seen in this Pre-Raphaelite era put most of 20th Century graphic "art" to shame. And worse. Millais, Holman Hunt, and Rosetti certainly deserve credit for breaking out of the stale forms of British painting, but many very worthy men and women took up the torch and blazed trails of their own. Waterhouse and others must not be ignored and forgotten. We would be thrilled to have his works displayed in our domiciles. I suspect original Waterhouse canvases capture large bids at auction these days. Excellent video and commentary. Thank you.
@AmuzeArt15 күн бұрын
Yes, Waterhouse is very popular today, and he was a perfectionist in his paintings. It's always nice to look back at those artists/movements that broke with the traditional rules of their time to create new ideas and styles
