Great video. Ill be looking at some of the areas and hoping it a simple o-ring fix. Cranks up and is a 24psi on cold start then drops to 15psi after being warmed up. Drives fine no noise. After a long drive start hearing lifter noises and the idle gets rough. Hoping i dont have to replace the engine.

i am at this stage with a 2013 AFM DOD lt silverado and just found the #4 intake lifter collapsed and inspected the cam and saw 'spalling' on it the lifter roller itself is just collapsed solid with the beginning of drag spalling on the roller so <eye roll> 123k miles but at 100k i was getting random 1-3 times a year stabil track auto disabling and had no idea why. when you get stabil track and traction control disabling, your about to lose oil pressure within 10-300 miles. i had a 2000 silverado also that had lifter noise on warm up, now i know why the original owner took it to the dealership and traded it in, i bet he took it to service first and heard the price tag on the repair and just decided the trade in value was better on a new truck. i still have that truck bought it with 113k and it's got 320k on it, but at 280k it was getting misfires and the lifter noise was alot more constant, but i knew nothing and just changed the oil which came out fine but started to get black before 3k miles. lucas high mileage synthetic helped it with the lifter tick since 150k when i first decided to see if that would help which it did considerably. idr why but the synthetics are just more slippery and for longer than conventional and keep the oil golden for longer. now i know what it means after watching a few of these afm dod issue videos, that's the first sign you have a lifter beginning failure the stabil trak warnings. normally i shut that stuff off when i start up in the winter because i'm a snow plow driver and i know how to drive in snow better than those woman driver aids can help, which actually interferes with compensating in snow and ice. but they are great for woman drivers because the feedback will scare the living hell out of them and make them slow down keeping them out of the ditch mostly. i drive like an old grandpa or F1 driver kimi riakkonen depending upon the traffic.

I have a 03 Silverado 2500 6.0 and it’s only got 150k on it and it’s always at 25psi hot or cold idle. No matter how hard you hit the gas it barely climbs past 40. When cruising around it’s like 30-35psi fluctuating slowly.

I have a question about the priming of the pump. Will this type of (gear pump) pull oil up the pickup tube on its own? I have an 8.1L (496cu.in.) Vortec in a 2001 Silverado Dually. Some idiot tried sabotaging the engine by stabbing the oil filter. Before putting the new oil and filter on, I took the drain plug out to drain any old oil. Nothing came out. Also, I should have mentioned how I found the issue. I was backing the truck up after being parked for a couple of days. Then the chime went off rapidly warning me and I immediately saw the information display lit up red saying severe oil pressure loss and low oil level. I immediately shut the engine off and coasted it about 15 feet back to where it was parked. I filled the new filter with clean synthetic oil and filled the engine with the 7-something quarts it normally holds. I got the thinking that maybe the pump will not create a suction to draw oil up into the pump. I have seen several videos using a garden sprayer pump to prime the pump and the entire oil system. The port that they use is the one on the drivers side front of the block. Well, that's easy when you have a block on an engine stand. So, I found a plug at the back of the block that appears to be in line with the front plug. It's near the filter. It has a square hole for a four-sided bit to go into. It is a square 8 mm bit that fits it. This plug is stuck in the block hard. It's in a hard-to-reach place with an exhaust manifold connection right where you need to put your ratchet/breaker bar. So, the other idea is, I decided to go through the oil pressure sensor port. Then, more thinking I did! 🤔 😂 Will pressurized oil get down towards the pump from this port? I think the "barbell-dogbone" may prevent oil from going in that direction. I think it keeps the oil in the upper half of the engine from running back into the pan each time you shut off the engine. That would mean that my idea of priming through the sending unit port is not going to work. I did take all the spark plugs out and I cranked it over watching the oil pressure gauge and didn't see it come up. I may not have done it long enough. A video with a guy from GM says it takes a while and even tells you to let the starter cool off in between. I drained about 3 quarts of oil to allow for pressuring it with the garden sprayer and I noticed that the oil is fairly dark and it's making me think that it was pumping oil during the cranking. I think what I am going to do next like right now! Is unscrew the new filter that was filled with new oil and dump it into the clear plastic tote thing I used, and see if the oil is dark at all like it's mixed with residual oil in the engine. If it's anything but clear clean oil then it's pumping and hopefully, when I start it, everything should be good. I'm long-winded too! 😂 Maybe you can suggest or tell me if the pump had enough residual oil or if the block would have enough to run back into the pump to be able to draw it through the pickup tube. It never made any engine noise like lifters. I shut it down immediately when the loss of pressure happened. I'm positive it didn't do damage and the truck wasn't under power other than idling in reverse. Great video and I learned a bit about the ports/plugs for the oil system through your video. I think the engine you have in the video has a little different plugs around the oil filter area but I guess the systems are the same as far as the routing through the block. Thanks again for your great video! 👍👍👍

So I have a 2007 NBS Silverado 1500, I had a 6.0 L76, put in it by some hacks, they intentionally didn’t put a oil pan with a sensor I realize now, I replaced it & low oil alarms is going off, I hear a little valve chatter so I’m going to drop the oil pan & look deep to see if I see crank bearings are jumping out. God I hope it’s not the case, if it’s not then I’ll replace all the other components for peace of mind. It’s seems though I don’t have to remove and axles though just the cross member

Going through this now on a 2011 Silverado aluminum block. I replace the screen couple years ago and I’ve put three send units in it since I’ve had it. It’s always favored lower pressure. I have a manual oil pressure gauge coming, but I’m not sure if that’s the correct thing to try since it will be on the port closest to the oil pump correct? I didn’t realize a lot of these problems existed on the newer engines. The truck I had before this was a 2000 model. I tore the engine down on the front to put a new O-ring on the pick up. Then I realized cam lobe had wore down. I go to pull the cam to replace it and realize the bearing had seized on the rear cam journal. So I scrap that engine replaced it with salvage yard unit with lower miles. I probably wouldn’t have bought this truck and I known the same issues existed. But this and will drop down to about 20 pounds at an idle when warm. But once in a blue moon, it will drop even lower, causing all kinds of indicator lights, telling me to shut the truck off. I will shut it off, then when I restart it, the oil pressure looks good or as good as it usually is with no warnings. Never really hear a lift or tick or anything. What would you recommend? I’m not above trading this thing off but what sucks is I was getting ready to pay it off

If I had to pull the Cam bearings I would not mess with fixing it might as well spend the money toward a new engine. I have a 2003 with 175k on a 4.8l has low oil pressure and I found out it had some sludge in the oil pan when I fix a rear main seal. I baught the truck for 6k because the body and interior are in mint condition from being garaged. One of the previous owners did not do maintenance like he should have. Anyway cleaned all that out and replaced the Oil Pressure sending unit that was buried to 80 and would not budge. Once I replaced the sensor it would read low oil pressure. It might just be the pick up tube O'Ring or the Camshaft bearing, but with that many miles and the cost to fix whatever is wrong now I might as well put a new engine in it and drive it for many more years. It is better than any truck being made right now IMO:P

I must be dense, but since the cam is just opening/closing a valve and even when in this failed condition it is opening/closing valve just not as high lift as should be, how does the miss show up on a scan tool? I thought scan tools interfaced with ECM and electronics, like an injector or coil, how does it show a miss from the lowered compression (I assume)? Thanks.
@Brainstangs
@Brainstangs 4 ай бұрын
not just any scan tool. A good scan tool with a misfire graphic. Yes a low lift cam lobe that is wearing down will cause a misfire at idle.
