Hi william. I've a question please. So, I've a olympic distance triathlon June 1st. So, 3 weeks. The issue is, my 1500m in the pool is constantly around 48- 50 mins. The cutoff is 55 mins on the day. I'm doing the distance constantly under the time limit, while taking loads of breaks (to catch my breath) I'm not swim fit. I'm still worried about the open water swim (it's a river) even tho I'm getting under the cutoff time by 5 mins in thr pool and taking an many breaks. A part of me is confident, the other is telling me I won't make the cutoff. The first side of me is I'm telling myself I'll go a bit faster on the day of fear of not making the cutoff time, due to adrenaline Any advice?? Getting nervous for it now! Thanks for any help/advice you could give
@williamjhou
@williamjhou 8 ай бұрын
Hey! I think you will do great! Like you mentioned, it is likely your adrenaline will kick in and you'll be able to conquer more than you think. The only thing I would recommend if you haven't done an open water swim is get to the venue early to get into the water ( they usually allow you to around the swim start like 30 minutes or so before start time). I've noticed when I go to complete a race I always freak out during the beginning of the swim for whatever reason. But getting in the water for a few minutes to warm up before the race had helped me calm down if nerves are an issue as well. During the swim you can essentially take as many breaks as you would in a pool depending on how well you can tread water. Don't try and go as fast as you can as you may fatigue quickly, but also don't go at too slow of a pace incase you do take breaks during the swim. Current can be an advantage, especially in a river. Overall, just try and relax and have fun. If you do happen to not make the cutoff time, no biggie, it happens. You'll just get out there next time and crush it.

Is the pain on the side of your knee? If yes, it's probably an IT band syndrome. Try strength trainning for your gluteus minimus (the upper part of the glute); look for exercises here on youtube, they're mostly elastic band exercises. Do some foam rolling on the side part of your quad avoiding the section close to your knee. I've had this and managed to make it go away completely in a few months. If the pain is in the middle part of your knee, look for a physiotherapist specialized in running, they'll be able to give you a treatment better than anti inflammatories and rest. Most of the running injuries (that are not bone related, like shin splits) are caused by weak musculature that overloads some tendon or ligament, so I guess you'll be able to recover just by doing some strength training and load control. Best of luck.

It gets uncomfortable because the trainer doesn't move, although there are some high-end trainers that have some movement integrated. When you ride outdoors your body will do microadjustments, this doesn't happen riding indoors on a trainer.

Saris has an app that allows you to calibrate your trainer to account for how tight the drum is interacting with the back tire. Just make sure you ride for about 10 minutes before calibrating to warm up the system to get an accurate calibration! I usually do a warm up, then calibrate, and then do the workout. If you don’t take the bike on/off the trainer or adjust the drum, there shouldn’t be a need to calibrate. Hope this helps! Direct drive trainers are definitely nice but wheel on ones are still solid especially for beginners

You don’t need a coach. I’ve finished several triathlons the last two years ranging from sprint to full distance without a coach. And that with one sprint podium and a IRONMAN finish around 11 hours, so it can be done without a coach. However a structured training program is important. I recommend you check out MoTTIV. A fraction of the cost compared to an coach and I think at least now that you get started the structure will help a lot. I can also recommend consuming Triathlon Tarrens KZbin channel for all the tips and tricks that a coach usually gives you. I’m happy to connect and show you what I use and help out if you want to.

@@williamjhou Some do, some don't. But if you have a good bike shop near you, give them a ring. BTW another tip for you about Ironman: respect the distance, respect the race. It is going to humble you in ways you could never imagine and the person who you want to become from this experience, happens in the training. That is where the iron is forged. Not on race day. But the 100's of hours that lead up to it. Holler at me if you have more ?'s.

Couple things.. 1) For the trainer, ignore distance and speed. They are typically off and I dont worry about them. I'd get a power meter so the power part is accurate since you dont have a smart trainer. But just focus on time in the saddle. Ironman Florida is a flat and boring course, so get yourself mentally prepared. Also, you might want to get a bike fit. That may help with the uncomfortable feelings on the trainer. You should be comfortable while maximizing power output. 2) Wetsuit looks good. 3) Online coaching works fine. My coaches coach me online and they put in my workouts (Training Peaks) and analyze the data that my garmin uploads. They have also analyzed my swim stroke via video, but when I was able to be there in person I was able to get live analysis as well.

Billy! If you are planning to do the Ironman in Florida I would highly suggest switching wetsuit's and going with a 3/2 mm. It is 3mm for the body and 2mm for the arms and legs. This is what most surfers in Florida use and I am always on the warmer side for most cold days in the water, you'd be surprised how fast you will overheat with just a few mm extra.

Thank you! the Ironman I am gonna do is going to be outside the US but i think the water temp will be in the 60s. I did an olympic tri today and it was 64 with the wetsuit in the video, it felt perfect. I was super scared I would overheat but surprisingly didn't. I think mine is 5 for the chest 3 for back and 2 for the arms

You can do it! I'm in my mid-40s and did my first Olympic and half Iron distances last year. Unsolicited advice: Get a swim coach if you can, or at least start watching lots of Effortless Swimming (channel) and learn from them. Use a pull buoy to help you focus on breathing and your stroke. Focus on exhaling lots and inhaling just a little (I'm a gasper! lol). Schedule some open water swimming (ideally with others around you) so you can get used to that--it's MUCH DIFFERENT than pool swimming. And do at least an Olympic distance before the full. A half would be wise, too, if you can squeeze it in. I did mine with a Trek similar like yours (Domane carbon version), so it's definitely doable. Lots of time on a Wahoo trainer with Zwift was priceless (and reduced needing to worry about traffic). Feel free to shoot me a message if you want to chat about first-timer experience. I don't know it all but learned a ton last year.
