How to open this emergency exit roof hatch for people who have never been shown before in case the unthinkable happens.

If you are the trainer as you said you are, then it is your job to ensure drivers know how to operate this device! It's not hard! It's not complicated! I have been driving a school bus as well as other style buses with these hatches for over 40 years without any issues! If a driver is unable to operate this device then they have no business driving a school bus or any other vehicle that has this device! I have taught many drivers over the years, not only drivers for a school district, but as a 3rd party CDL tester. It is all in the quality of training the driver receives!

Once shown it is VERY easy. You fail to understand the point of this video. These roof hatches are equipped on many types of passenger vehicles that number in the millions. None of the passengers are shown how to use them. If the vehicle flips and fills with smoke and the driver is unconscious NONE of the passengers will get out of this door. This is why I don't like this design. These exist for more than just to be inspected by the driver before their run. So if I've yet to come across one person who can open it without being shown how, it's a horrible emergency exit design. The older ones were self explanatory. Turn and open.

@@cdlanddriving9736 Funny story, My school cracks thieves open to use as air conditioning, the way they did it is they just pushed up on them. However my older brother was told to do it and he did not know how, he ended up turning the lever and opening it up and no one could get it down, it was kind of a funny situation. And what makes it even funnier is I almost did the same thing

I learned with this kind of hatch. If you check it every day you get used to it and it's easy. You are right though......if someone was just put into this bus and the unthinkable happens they may not know how to do it.

Every single trainee I've had took them a minute or 2 to get it. We've made jokes about it but the longer this went on the more concerned I became and it was no longer funny. I teach everyone how to use it but what if other companies are not as vigilant. I felt this video was important to make. Please share it.

the roof hatch is only useful incase the bus is on its side.

I’m on the bus to work right now and I’m looking at the latch pointed at “to exit” 😭😭 I’m like I know this thing isn’t open all the time. This video confirmed it is and it’s probably broken because it’s definitely closed
@cdlanddriving9736 Жыл бұрын
Once the latch is in the exit position, it becomes a push button and won't open unless you push the latch like a button.

I'm watching your videos because I'm about to start Class B school bus training this week for my new job with a school district, but I take issue with this one (I've definitely picked up a lot from the others though, thanks for that!). I've been driving a 33 passenger party bus for 2 years now, as well as a 20 passsenger cutaway transit bus for 4 years. Both have this hatch, and honestly opening it is probably the easiest thing ever (the instructions say "Turn then PUSH KNOB"). What you SHOULD have addressed is how to CLOSE it - because THAT is the total pain in the ass if you don't know the trick. Most people (including myself for a while because that's how I was taught) reset the latch then pull down the front, then pull down the back - which can occasionally result in punching yourself in the head if your hand slips, since that's the HARDEST way to do it. The RIGHT way to do it is to reset the latch, then pull down left, then pull down right. That way you're compressing both springs facing the same direction, rather than fighting the opposing springs.

After training for awhile what I noticed was every person I trained couldn't figure it out the 1st time. After I showed them how it was very easy yes. Having never been shown how they all made the same mistake. Turned knob then tried to push up on the door to open. If you the experienced are able to get back there and open it, all is well. Often in crashes the experienced driver cannot or are unconscious. If the bus is rapidly filling with smoke and visibility absent none of the passengers would get out through the roof hatch. The older designs EVERY person could open it 1st try without being shown how. This is why I stand strong in my hatred of this design and why I made this video.
