Okay so why didn't you just sharpen it yourself? Its like 20 bucks. Obviously, some finishing was left out to cut costs it's not a big deal.

I bought the Old Timer and was disappointed. It was dull as a weeding hoe and would not take an edge. Don’t waste your money on the Old Timer. If you want a good knife to whittle get a FlexCut.

I know this is an old video but thank you for this! Wasn't sure if it was okay to glue them if you aren't finished cutting and i really didn't want to accidentally ruin my knife with glue or anything lol Was worried my fox would be one-eared forever 😭

Two thumbs up!! Thanks for this video. Highly informative and yet concise. I've been carrying a Swiss Army Knife for a while, but just started wood carving. I think I will make this modification.

Oh and by the way if you get the premium or Deluxe you actually will get a walnut or an oak handle even in the picture you can tell it's Walnut

Okay just to give you a heads up I have purchased both and a few other sets and I found out if you get the deluxe set or the premium set of beavercraft they blow the flex cut out of the water and let's face it there's not a one of us let's go to say okay this is the profile we want with this blade we always go and resharp it and re-profile them anyway you're going to do the same thing with the flex cut all of them come extremely Sharp but you need to learn how to sharpen your knives anyway add maintain them they both have the same ergonomic design and the same steel the only difference is is fit and finish and as I said if you get the deluxe or the premium the fit and finish is there any my opinion looks better than the flex cut

The flexcut comes with a cancer causing chemical warning on Amazon. Who would buy a tool with a cancer causing warning?

beavercraft sets wont put me into debt, and is great for what i need, flexcut is to pricey to use for me, im broke enough that if i used a flexcut id be sweating the whole time about chipping or breaking it edit: beavercraft is my go to not just because of a tight budget, but because i prefer using a thicker blade

I enjoy the knife I'm not good at making wooden spoons but while camping I like to try and this does a good enough job and I've cut myself 3 times so far I wouldn't want it sharper

I just went to Helvie Knives website. It is so unfortunate that their family is having severe health issues. They are NOT taking any new orders at this point. They used to state a 16 month waiting list for paid orders. I suppose that is gone now. I wish them all the best during this crisis. I just happen to have one Helvie knife that I purchased years ago and just put away. It is very sad that the Universe does this kind of thing to good people.

I’d say the Old Timer is perfect for beginners, no beginner wants to pay CJ prices especially if they’re not experienced in blade maintenance. They can start with the OT and any mistakes they make are cheap to fix, heck for the price why not buy two and break one down and see what can be done with it re modifications. CJ’s a way overpriced for a sharp blade and ergonomics, most beginners aren’t going to be carving more than a spoon or a bushcraft cup so it’s more than suitable for the occasional use it will get. If they find they love carving THEN consider stepping up but as I said, CJ’s are way overpriced.

Thank you for sharing this! I have carved many faces but few animals and a dog is my next project requested from a family member. Thank you for the honesty of the "oops". When I tried to carve a bird I accidentally performed a "head-en-ectomy!" so yes too much pressure. Also trying to carve a hat the material was thin so I too had to make a tiny stop cut then vertical cut like your tail that is a handy technique. I will watch your vid many times as I do to really get the techniques down.

Generally, you wear the glove on the hand that holds the wood.

A little bit of two part epoxy down those holes and you may have less flex.

I love these knives and recommend them to any beginner over beavercraft. They are easy to find and reliable, easy to sharpen and hold an edge, plus the handles feel great.

Right hand never in danger?! Then shows technique that puts right thumb in danger?! Not dangerous, because you do it in a very controlled way? You have NO IDEA about safety, sir, and the least you could do for the good of people would be deleting this video. Please. Thank you.
