The wood I used is basswood, and I buy it in 1x1x6 inch blanks. I simply cut the 6-inch blank down into several 2.5" sections using a handsaw.

Nice job! Choking up on the knife handle like you are doing when making the delicate cuts on the crown point is very helpful for control.
