I really like what you said about not being sure about how to feel and the mood keeps changing. It makes me think about being a catholic as a gay person and having so many conflicted emotions just over my own beliefs. Then beyond myself, you see "christians" being some of the worst people on this earth (I think that's why Madonna included the burning crosses), it's like you are just always being jerked around. Even at the time people thought this video was so evil and it's like no, you're mad that it's calling out that racist hypocrisy. It's like you're more mad about racism being called out than you are about the actual racism. But I really appreciate someone like Madonna kind of sticking to her guns and appreciating her religion while fighting it at the same time.

this song is my favourite, i love that you react to the video with it. it may be a grotesque video with the piercings and stuff hidden behind filters, but thats what i love about it, she can turn stuff many people shun from into an artful accompanying video to one of her best songs.

It’s been a while, but still I’m loving your reaction. Just for the record, the official Billboard account uploaded a shortened version of the speech. They removed a lot of impactful things she said. You should check it out, IMHO.

I think that what Madonna suffered in the middle of this madness is that she became news while being vilified: 'Witch,' 'Whore,' 'Bitch.' And she doesn't have a mother to cry to or hug. Her friends lost to AIDS and drugs. 😭😭

That´s why she ia a millionaire de luxe. LGBT community and Black americans relate to her at a right point. I do remember sitting on a trans-atlantic plane, going via NY to Chicago. When in Chicago, tried getting a ticket to her concert. They laughed so hard at me. I was so young and after that Chicago, I´ve been lucky enouch to see her in many cities. Minus Paris/ Madame X , when she cancelled ....but still I managed to get to her party in Paris. That´s another story ;)

11:09 The really cool thing is she doesn’t just adapt to trends - she’d often set them. Especially early in her career, she would come upon “minority” cultures where cool things were happening, get moved by them, and then create mainstream art out of it that then became trendy. She’d set whole fashion, music, and visual trends. There’s not a pop artist today, especially women, that doesn’t have strands of her DNA.

Even in the 80s and 90s, no two songs (or even the same two videos) would be too much alike, even from the same or same album. People celebrate her ability to reinvent herself, but her range is still underrated imo. Just an icon!

The vocals on this are the first time she ever sang it and it was done in one take...the producer liked it so much because it was raw and unfiltered so they kept it.

She is so great and should be No 1 in the US as well! She is so big internationally but with the Voltaire success in Vegas this year she is well underway to be big in the US soon! Such a shame she is portrayed second fiddle to Madonna, but I think most of these artists are starting to realise she is so good! Many well known artists visited her Voltaire show including Janet Jackson and Christina Agilira. Many artists have copied Kylie over the years and as Chris Martin has said, she is 10 years ahead of her time. I personally think she is 20 years ahead. When you watch old footage from 2002 say the Fever Tour where she enters the concert fully enclosed in a space suit tailored made for her, you realise even in 2024 how advanced she is. Much like Bowie! Inspirational and trend setting! Amazing is all I can say!!! ❤❤❤❤

Madonna's unyielding defiance against societal expectations has long been a testament to her resilience in the face of relentless scrutiny and criticism. From the outset of her career, she boldly asserted control over her body and sexuality, a move that immediately made her a target for detractors. Despite predictions of her fleeting success as a mere "one-hit wonder" dating back to 1982, Madonna's unwavering determination and undeniable talent have only served to further incense her critics, who have lazily resorted to vilifying her as a convenient scapegoat. In this interview, the hypocrisy of such criticism was starkly exposed, particularly through the selective and judgmental line of questioning employed by outlets catering to conservative sensibilities, such as Nightline. By attempting to shame Madonna for not conforming to traditional roles of motherhood and wholesome behavior, these interrogators revealed their own biases and expectations, primarily dictated by patriarchal norms. What emerged from this exchange was not merely Madonna's quick-witted responses, but rather her steadfast refusal to apologize for who she is or compromise artistic expression and her autonomy. Her unwavering stance against the attempts to belittle and constrain her serves as a powerful rebuke to the double standards and hypocrisy that continue to plague society. Furthermore, it's worth acknowledging the collaborative efforts of artists like Lenny Kravitz, whose songwriting contributions, though initially unrelated to Madonna, nonetheless resonated deeply with her ethos. Kravitz's recognition of Madonna's embodiment of the song's themes underscores the pervasive understanding of her cultural impact, transcending mere expectations and stereotypes. In essence, Madonna's resilience and refusal to be boxed into societal norms serve as a beacon of empowerment for all who dare to challenge the status quo, reminding us that true liberation lies in embracing one's authentic self, regardless of the backlash it may provoke.

People nowadays are so used to voices being modified and enhanced through autotune that they only react to a voice when the singer is screaming the loudest, but here you can hear that the voice is amazing right from the start of the song.
