I just built a rectangular bespoke duct reducer leveraging everything this video taught me. Never done ductwork before. Researched the heck out of it. We're renovating a 100+ year old house and replacing all the ductwork (among other things). This was very clear, and really helped me. Although achieving a Pittsburgh with only hand tools was a wee bit of a challenge - I'm envious of the shop machines - lol. Thanks for sharing your expertise!

Do you need a lower Merv rating in the Summer to protect the AC or is it just the opposite - a lower Merv rating in the Winter? Does a "thicker," higher Merv rating hurt the AC or the Furnace more?
@MetroHCI

Depending on the size of equipment. We install 16x25x4 MERV11 & 20x25x4 MERV 11 filters on all new installs.

@@MetroHCI Thanks. Just a typical residential unit for a 3,200 square foot house. Lenox unit with a 1-inch filter: 20x25x1. I read that too high a Merv will "clog," or choke the unit and static pressure drops and puts a strain on equipment leading to failure, etc and that residential with 1-inch should never use more than Merv 8. ?

Bought a brand new Trane in 9/22. Trane unit was manufactured in 9/22. Panama Florida plant orgin. Model 4WCC4030A1000AB Lasted 30 days then quit. Called Trane authorized dealer that sold/installed unit. Took him 11 months to come back out. No heat during winter/ no AC during summer, 11 months no service,no show. Finally comes out and tells me unit has defective coil, will have to be replaced. Repair man tore brand new AC unit apart in yard. Brand new in pieces, 30 days of service,now scattered across yard. He was not happy , and neither was I. Fast foward 90 days ,and I hear some one drilling on my AC unit outside. I go to window ,but can see no one. I walk outside to find 2 new holes drilled into side of hvac unit... Exactly 9 11/16 from edge....Exactly where new coil had just been replaced!!!!!!! Over $5,000 for a Trane unit that operated less than 100 days total. Then was sabotaged by someone who knew exactly where the coil is sitting behind panel cover. Called 1800Trane and asked if installer had been reimbursed for labor,on the warranty claim on the defective unit. Or did he not get paid for work,and now wants revenge. Trane would not answer. Called cops,they said oh well,no witnesses, no case.

Liked the HVAC pointers. Gotta say, it’s confusing to see framed basement walls in front of insulated house wrap which has an exposed side in direct contact with basement concrete walls. Not a great idea as moisture WILL come in contact with the exposed insulation under that wrap, negating the R value. Removing all wall wrap and then installing foam board sheets (with air gap behind it) is a much better solution. This is what I did in my own home.

It is better, but it's also a lot of work. When I did my first basement I ripped that same insulation off and did foam board everywhere. Lots of time and money. This time I'm just not bothering. My current house has ditra against exterior block to limit ingress of water and I keep a dry basement with a dehumidifier. I've not detected any noticeable moisture (I'm sure some is there, though), against block walls in any season so framing exactly as this guy did.

@@patty109109 - Sounds like newer construction and that you confirmed moisture migration hasn't been an issue. Should be fine! My home is newer however prior to starting the project I intentionally flooded exterior foundation walls where I landscaped. Sure enough, a limited amount of water migrated into the basement - through very thin foundation wall cracks - which I was able to properly seal. And yes, the foam board WAS expensive (just over $900) but not too hard to install. Gives great peace-of-mind.

Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I kzbin.infoUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

I do not get to do a lot of sheet work, but would love to see some offsets with reduce transitions. I would also like to see the allotment for each seam, ie pitsburg is 1" but I believe Drive is 1/2" and "S" seam is 3/4"? but I am not a metal worker. Just trained by an old hand from way back.

Buyer Beware. I hired a " Autorized Carrier Dealer" to install a High efficiency gas furnace and A/C unit. They installed a oversize ( BTU) ( Mistake #1) They installed a unmatched A/C evap coil and outside unit ( Mistake #2) Everybody as a HVAC installer knows that you need to match the ton rating of the evap coil and outside unit. They did not ! The evap A coil was rated for 3/12 tons and the outside unit was 2 ton, then changed to 2 1/2 ton on the installation date. This was still wrong. The install was sloppy. I sent about a total of 15 emails to the installers customer service, the selling agent,and the owner himself. They did next nothing, except avoid me. This is about 4 years later. The MRB and the CEO of Carrier refuse my request to refund the money I spent on the Furnace and A/C back in 2019. All these emails were copied and documented. A senior member of the MRB Board of Carrier suggested getting a " Factory Autorized Carrier Dealer" to inspect the problems. I did, and there report which I sent to the Carrier MRB states, that most of the problems with the Heating and A/C System originates from installing of incorrect equipment. The " Factory Autorized" technician had to shut off the second heating stage of the furnace because it was overheating. In spite of this report Carrier did nothing when I requested my money back and have a correct system installed. This has been going on for 4 years. I found this situation unconciable . Here is a multi Billion dollar company that does not stand up to its very own "Policy." Again for the second time, you can look up the statement what Carriers "Policy" and what the promise the CEO made.( To do the right thing). Just as a reminder, had sent a total of over 15 emails, to the installers customer service dept, and the agent who designed the Furnace/A/C sytem, and owner himself who had installed the Carrier furnace, A/C system. The MRB Board of Carrier , wanted me to go after the Carrier Autorized dealer, who installed the equipment. That was there problem and not pass that responsibilty ontp me. Carrier themselves made promises to make sure that there clients would be satisfied with there Carrier equipment that was installed. You can look up that "Policy" up yourself in there website. All this happened within the first year of the installation.Meanwhile I am dealing with a rare cancer all this time.I will continue to persue this situation! So... Buyer Beware! unbelievable!

Just talked to my friends overseas. In Australia air conditioners come with life time guarantees. Technicians come often to do thorough diagnosis and repairs if required regularly. Guess what australia do not manufacture them at all. Most are Japanese or European brands. Cost of deregulations, self regulations and outsourcing is costing Americans in trillions while corporatism take $$$$$$$ laughing to stock markets, banks and even parking in tax heavens overseas.
