Some of the sketchiest table saw usage i've ever seen.... great block though!
@MakersManualАй бұрын
I must admit, looking back it doesn't look great. Although I believe in the video we do suggest a change to the order of operations and instead cut the knife slots before cutting the steps. This will make for a much safer build. Rest assured though, while it looks sketchy, we were being very careful. I believe all the other cuts are safe, provided you take the usual precautions. Unfortunately the UK version of our table saw has a terribly designed riving knife, which means we can't use if for non-thru cuts. We've since modified the saw, so we can have the knife for these operations (we have a video on that releasing soon).

Also, the last time we looked (they keep changing things), the offer a free licence to Makers. What kind of wax do you use? I was thinking paste wax possibly, but I figured I'd ask to make sure.
@MakersManual2 ай бұрын
We used a water based exterior varnish rather than wax to finish our Triangle (see @16:30), it's a little harder wearing and no chance on anything rubbing off onto your clothes or carpets. Just be sure it is fully cured before brining into your kids room, the VOCs in varnish can be nasty.

Great project but ...... PLEASE!! use safety guards or guide sticks! This was hard to watch.
@MakersManual9 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for your concern. This is the second comment we've had asking us to be careful, so you've got us questioning our approach. Can we ask what particular cut got you worried? There are times where the camera can make things look scarier than they actually were, though we admit that cutting the knife slots 8:43 with a jobsite saw did require a little extra care. But we do say 9:56 the better way to do things. We aren't using guards or push sticks in any of these cuts, because our fingers were always well clear of the blade. But please feel free to correct us if we did do something daft somewhere. We'd rather feel a little foolish than feel a spinning blade... ek. Thanks again for the concern

@MakersManual9 ай бұрын
Hi @gobear83 We appreciate your concern and know exactly the section of video you are referring to and I agree it looks dubious. But don’t worry, we always use push sticks where appropriate and in this instance it’s a combination of camera angle and lens zoom that makes things look particularly scary. Trust us, we had to watch this bit over and over when editing and it made us wince each time, but it was much safer in the real world. We intend to keep all of our fingers 🖐️🖐️

This could be a very silly question but I can’t seem to find a satisfying answer anywhere online. How long should the screws be that I’m using to fix the batons to the wall? I’m assuming you don’t want them to be going in too shallow as they might not hold as much weight? (The batons I’m using are 3x2”). Happy holidays and great work on these videos 😁
@MakersManual Жыл бұрын
There’s no such thing as a silly question. But as you’ve probably guessed there isn’t one answer to this question. Assuming you have a timber stud walls and are screwing into the studs, then I would put 2” into the wall; this allows for 1.5” into the stud and 0.5” to get through the plasterboard (Gyproc). Plus the thickness of the Baton, in your case a 4” screw would be good. Though you could use smaller screws if you counterbored the baton, this might be neater, as 4” screws can be chunky. Hope that helps, happy making.

I feel like this would get full of crud before too long. How do you imagine maintenance and cleaning of piece working?
@MakersManual Жыл бұрын
Our first version of this is about 4 years old and 8 out of the 9 slots had no problems with crud collecting. The 9th contains the bread knife that often goes back with a few crumbs. These are easily removed by knocking it upside down or a vacuum in the slot. Provided you keep your knives clean, I think this block should probably be a cleaner option than a typical knife block 🔪 🪵.

Hi, on our website we give a little more information on what we think are Required Tools and what are just Helpful (makers-manual.com/shop/geometric-picture-frame). But the great thing about woodworking, is there is always another way of doing something, if you are missing a tool, then I sure you'll be able to think up another way. The only thing to be careful of however, is to get your cuts accurate if you want nice clean joints. This is of course easier with certain tools, but possible to achieve in many ways.
