glad to see you didn’t use 100 pocket holes for the desktop. Great build!!

Haha! Thanks Kyle 👍 I was going to say, there’s not a pocket hole in sight… but there’s one in the corner of the baton 🙈

@@MakersManual I’m a terrible builder and wood worker but I’ve always heard it’s a bad idea for the top just because of movement. Those biscuits are great. And no issue with me on pocket holes. Just think some people go crazy with them haha.

What a beautiful desk. Thanks for sharing your process for building it. Good luck with the channel and congrats on the new baby🎉.
@MakersManual Жыл бұрын
Thanks, we’re really pleased you liked the desk. Starting the channel at the same time as a baby has certainly been a challenge, but we’re beginning to figure it all out. Some of our upcoming videos should feature baby again as we build furniture and toys for him.

@@MakersManual Well, a lot of people never get started so I am glad you guys took the leap. I've been making KZbin videos for 10 years and love it. I look forward to more of your content (I wish my wife and I had your woodworking skills)!

Thank you VIRGIL, that is what we were going for. A clean and simple design, that we could make quickly and cheaply, but also big enough for our needs. It's worked out great for us so far.

This could be a very silly question but I can’t seem to find a satisfying answer anywhere online. How long should the screws be that I’m using to fix the batons to the wall? I’m assuming you don’t want them to be going in too shallow as they might not hold as much weight? (The batons I’m using are 3x2”). Happy holidays and great work on these videos 😁
@MakersManual Жыл бұрын
There’s no such thing as a silly question. But as you’ve probably guessed there isn’t one answer to this question. Assuming you have a timber stud walls and are screwing into the studs, then I would put 2” into the wall; this allows for 1.5” into the stud and 0.5” to get through the plasterboard (Gyproc). Plus the thickness of the Baton, in your case a 4” screw would be good. Though you could use smaller screws if you counterbored the baton, this might be neater, as 4” screws can be chunky. Hope that helps, happy making.

Thanks for posting this, it’s exactly the kind of setup that I’m intending. How is it holding up, any issues with cupping or usage marks? Also, how is the chamfer at the front? Would you do it the same way again after some time using it?
@MakersManual Жыл бұрын
It's holding up really well, with no dents or scratches. Although I must admit we both use large mouse mats (amzn.to/46ZUqEq) which do a really good job of protecting the surface. The chamfer at the front is also working out well, it's comfortable and I would probably do the same again. Also the desk has remained flat with no cupping etc which is what I would expect, given how well it is secured to all the batons. The only issue we have encountered... and this is a weird one... is the surface is now wavey (at the glue joins, the wood is a little lower). I wouldn't worry about that happening for you though, we did the glue up on a very cold week. Although we left the desk for a few days to dry before sanding, the moisture in the glue hadn't fully dissipated and so the timber was swollen at the joins. This meant when we sanded the desks surface, we were inadvertently removing excess material from those joins. This meant when the glue fully dried out, the timber shrank back down leaving the wobbles. Lesson learnt, don't do a glue up when its freezing! Good luck, its a great project. The plans are free on our website if you want a go. Let us know how you get on. Michael
