In this video, I’m talking about the impact of the recent fires in Southern California-specifically the Line, Bridge, and Airport fires. These fires caused major closures across key hiking areas, with some trails expected to remain off-limits until 2025 and beyond. I go over what’s been shut down, using custom maps I created by layering the Forest Service’s PDF closure maps onto a CalTopo map. I also provide some alternative hikes that are still accessible if you're looking for options while these popular spots are out of reach.
One of the big closures is around San Gorgonio and Big Bear Lake due to the Line Fire. Although the area is closed until the end of November, the southern parts of San Bernardino National Forest, like Mt. San Jacinto, remain open. Then there’s the Bridge Fire, which hit areas near Mount Baldy and Wrightwood, and those closures are even more extensive, lasting until December 2025. I point out some other nearby hikes, like Crystal Lake and Mount Wilson, which can be solid alternatives while waiting for the closures to lift.
The Airport Fire, though smaller, also caused some significant closures in Cleveland National Forest. This area will be shut down for about a year. I’ve linked all the maps and information below the video for those who want to see exactly what's off-limits. It’s tough to see so much damage to areas we love, and recovery will be slow-some of these places might not fully recover in our lifetime. But I’ve put together some suggestions to keep you hiking in the meantime. Stay safe, and hopefully, we can avoid more fires in the future.
