I was at a meeting at WestWind Media, Mike Post's studio in the San Fernando Valley and was in the studio and could see Mike Post in his room writing a show literally while we were in the next room chatting about about something else. Great times. All reel to reel then in the mid 80's. There is a whole other amazing story about that place as well, but want to keep that offline for now. About the trials of noise thru the floor there and how they got rid of it. NO fault to the engineer, designer of the place Chris Huston either.

Classic Post / Carpenter track of the era, with Pete doing all the orchestrations. Studio orchestra. Brass dry as a bone. Same with the string section. The piano was doubled with a Rhodes with chorus on the early theme sessions. It's Larry Carlton doing the guitar on all versions. The guitar part gets a few variations on each session re-arrangement. The middle eight chords are so characteristic for Post / Carpenter cues. A lot of the incidental cues for Magnum , Rockford and The A-team use them a lot throughout.
@palebluedotstudios5 күн бұрын
Wow, you really know your Post/Carpenter details! That's right: I forgot to mention Larry Carlton, whose guitar-playing is so wonderful. Or rather, I wound up editing it out for time. Do you think the piano was doubled with a rhodes? I had wondered if that was the case, although it sounded like a single keyboard instrument to me. But I should check out the re-recorded full version to verify. Cheers! Stay tuned for more, definitely going to cover Rockford, A-Team, and others!
@culttelevision5 күн бұрын
@@palebluedotstudios Yup, been all over themes for 40 years. Yes, the opening sections (on the Tv sessions) are just acoustic piano. Then the Rhodes doubles and syncopates with the acoustic on the verse section. It's the same on Post's only 'official' release from 1982 (even though that was in the wrong tempo and didn't have any orchestra on it!) .

Yes, this is one of the best TV themes ever. And it completely baffles me that there's no official soundtrack album for the show yet! And why was a rerecorded version of the theme released and not the original?
@palebluedotstudios5 күн бұрын
So glad you agree! As for the re-recorded version, what often happens with TV themes is that they're written and recorded quickly, and to match the exact length of a 30-60 second intro. But then when the show becomes popular, they go back in an re-record a longer version. For me, they're almost always disappointing, because we fall so deeply in love with those precise arrangements, and how they're permanently synchronized with their matching visuals. This is an interesting thought; I might have to do a video on this. Cheers!
