My wife used to work at a summer camp that had a huge, old weeping beech tree on the property - it was so widespread, they would use the canopy of it to tell stories in shade. What was interesting about it was a number of the branches would grow outward for about 10-20 feet and then seem to re-root and sprout back up. So I always assumed (for that species anyway) that it did serve a purpose of spreading out for access to nutrients.

My grandmother has a weeping willow. Ever since I could remember that tree has stood there. And I've climbed it. Tied swings to it. Piñatas for parties and watched ants on it's trunk. Weeping willows really do hold a very special place in my heart.

The end reminded me of a documentary and book called "The Botany of Desire". The premise was that plants adapt to our needs/wants through close association with us over time and that those adaptations spread the plants genetics, sometimes worldwide. The examples given were apples, potatoes, and cannabis. Very interesting video. 🤔🤓🍻

There are a few species of Willows which grow in a prairie reserve at my community college. The small Sandbar Willows form bunches and bundles together which tend to crowd out other plants. The ones that grow old enough to actually resemble a tree don’t exactly look like a weeping willow, but they do get all twisty and spread out instead of growing taller and taller. Perhaps because they grow near the edge of water, getting too tall could make them unstable.

I SPECULATE THAT these trees are more resilient to storm damage since they are a) flexible and b) lower to the ground for a given extent of growth. They also maximise sunlight absorbtion when not planted too close to other trees.

My aunt had multiple huge willows in her yard. Several got too big and had to be removed, but the biggest was smack in the middle. As a little kid, I loved to stare up at it. The wind would cause the vines to brush against my cheeks and hair. Me and my siblings loved to make crowns and tails out of it too.

In the part of Sweden were I live, wild weeping willows (and other kinds of salix) and weeping alders are pretty common close to bodies of running water, dipping their branches into the water. But you hardly see them anywhere else, unless planted by humans. Its not uncommon to se free branches flooting around in the water that has started to form roots, perhaps that is part of the explanation why weeping varieties of these trees are the most common there. The branches that reach the water start to root and then detach from the trees, to be spread to other places. You can also sometimes see small floating "islands" of debris under the trees, that have been caught by branches still attached to the trees, and those branches often start to root in the debris, and as more debis get caught, with time it sometimes form new land.

reaching high is neccessary if you have other vegetation that would otherwise throw shade on you. if you grow in a savanna, I don't think it matters much. or as theorized in the video, it might have more benefits than disadvantages in such a case. however, herbivores' ability to reach low hanging vegetation matters.

Weeping Willows are quite common in Australia. Usually growing next to rivers or irrigation channels. I've heard that the branches fall into the water and propagate downstream, but I don't know how true that is...

the most common weeping tree where i live is the weeping birch, but we call them hengebjørk (hanging birch) in my native Norwegian

I always expected this was due to overburden(like appletrees barely able to deal with the weight of their fruits) therby affecting the way they grow or damage within the braches resulting in deformation(like improper healed bones)

There was 1 weeping willow on the edge of the forest at the house I grew up in. The leaves hung to the ground and formed a little ground level tree house

One of my dreams ever since I was a child was to own property with a weeping willow by some sort of body of water (lake, pond, etc). Maybe have a hammock in its shade and read. IDK why I've held on to that image for so long but I just find it and these trees enchanting.

An interesting tidbit I'd like to add as well many Native Americans use the weeping willows branches as healing tools. The Iroquois Nation for example used the bark could be made into a tea while the branches were used into making medicine hoops. The dance was known as a hoop dance.

That isn't really unique to the weeping variety but all willow trees which humans have used for many thousands of years even leaving paleolithic glyphs which seem to indicate when to harvest willow bark.
