Today, everyone and their moms are gamers. Back then, few people played Nintendo. Few considering todays number of gamers. 90+ % of people that played Nintendo played SMB1, maybe 2 and probably 3. Metroid NES was so niche that no one every heard of it in those days. Metroid II was so rare that you'd be lucky to find 10 kids in a 50k people city that had it.

I disagree with pretty much everything you said in the video tbh, most of the time because the game is a SNES game and as a game released in the 90s, I'd say that weird things like requiring coins to save or the harder difficulty was far more common it doesn't bother me at all or anything, just feel like it's normal. I wouldn't say the game is perfected but compares to the first DKC game, DKC2 is a massive improvement (DKC is the game I like the least out of the 5 DKC games). (in my opinion) it has better environments (and I think DKC2 has more variety than DKC has), playing Diddy and Dixie is more interesting since they play more differently than Donkey and level design feels more creative. I feel like DKC is too basic on a lot of aspects (that's why I think that this is the actual overrated DKC game btw). I would also add that a game doesn't need to be flawless (since it can't) to be consideres "perfect" to my eye. When I like a game, I might ignore the flaws since everything else is just amazing. In my opinion DKC2 clearly deserved to be a fan favorite (more than DKC at least), even if it isn't my favorite

B/W was the first generation where the date of when a Pokémon was caught doesn't get deleted when the Pokémon gets transfered into a future generation. Gen 4 did us dirty, the dates where deleted and replaced in B/W with the transfer date.

With DX coming out soon I think it would be totally awesome to play as Propeller Knight, I think hes my favorite character that Ive seen thus far after beating Shovel of Hope main campaign. It would be fun to play as Tinker Knight too but would be fun if he was as he is portrayed as a weaker character, and thus winning with him would actually be harder, consider it a hard mode.

Second comment time! I honestly loved your sections on the first and last game, but with Samus Returns… I feel like you kinda dogged on things like the Metroids, which yeah I will admit are flawed, and the ways you fight them. This also includes the Ice Beam, I don’t even think you mentioned that the Ice Beam does a lot of damage to them and also that you can freeze them and slow them down. Which makes the Ice Beam your sort of, Metroid attack specialist and puzzle beam, which imo made it far more interesting to use. As for the grapple beam, yeah, aiming at a spot is perfectly fine most of the time, and I don’t really see the issue with swapping beams via a quick tap of the thumb on the touchscreen if you for some reason swapped to it. But that’s just me I guess. Also side note, that surprise Alpha Metroid outside the hydro station in am2r was also there in the original M2, the game usually shows you a Metroid shell before a fight, but that one simply just shows up and the shell is revealed after.

Samus Returns is a 14 hour slog? tool swapping is hard? Running out of aeon sucks? Sounds like skill issues to me. Fr though, I agree that SR has a million tiny little problems that build up, and compared to Dread that is what separates the quality of the two games. Area 3 in particular sucks, and is funnily enough the worst part in all 3 games (in AM2R's case I felt that after several playthroughs), but picks up later in the Tower which is always one of the best. Besides gimmicky gammas in SR, I prefer SR's metroids over the other two. AM2R's make things hard in ways that don't feel rewarding to beat and doesn't feel like my fault when something goes wrong. Their dodges and weird floating just sucks. SR's metroids are real boss battles that reward skill (and you can kill them faster, git gud). One could argue "the faster you get metroid fights over with the better", but then the original has both beat anyways. I also much prefer SR's ice beam because Metroid always had a problem with ice forcing you to shoot enemies more because it froze them. Being separate it's both a beam to fight Metroids specifically and I only freeze when I want to freeze. Also, the other beams do stack in SR. Only ice is separate. Personally I prefer the original 1.0 release of AM2R the most, but it has a potential game breaking bug so 1.1 is a must. 1.5+ are cool but I feel a slight "feature creep" from them. Sometimes it looks or feels better, other times it feels like I'm playing a mod artificially changing things. Like there's the improved Serris on one end, but a bunch of new creatures slapped into every zone everywhere on the other. AM2R is overall my favorite but I don't think either remake truly captures the original's "vibe", and like the micro-problems SR has, it also has little things that are better than AM2R. I mean, SR definitely has the best Metroid Queen fight. Probably the best boss in the franchise.

I can understand some of your points, but I felt like a few others fell flat. I can agree the game is a bit more rough around the edges in the "lategame" because I find a lot of games tend to get like that. DKC2 is no exception. I can even sympathize with a handful of these specific complaints, like the weather stages being rough or the honey levels not being the most fun with a bad camera that makes them way harder than they have the right to be... the King Zing fight also totally sucks. It's easily one of the worst bosses in the series imo. But a decent number of the clips actually felt hard to watch. Why wouldn't your first instinct be in a tight corridor in a presumably final world to "defeat the enemy" in Castle Crush, for example? Jumping over the porcupines and then eventually running out of room felt like a deserved loss to me when you had chances to adapt and defeat the baddies, but did not. Also, these stages DO have checkpoints... so that was a disappointing lie made to frame the game in a harsher light. Either that, or poor research/remembering wrong. What was going on when you jumped into a rope without the timer being reset and knowing you had a TNT barrel in your hand and couldn't grab on? I personally can't process how someone could come to the conclusion that the game was unfair based on poor playing like that. I don't mean to say "skill issue" though because I feel that is unfair to your critique. But these clips rubbed me the wrong way. The pirate theme stuff to me also just feels like a matter of personal taste to borderline nitpicking. Pirate castles? Coasters? Do you see those in media every day? Personally, I don't. I felt like these were fun twists on stuff that was pretty out of the ordinary. I don't think it takes away from the experience, especially when DKC1 had an industrial/military theming present. Military commanders that wear helmets, enemies that wear those military shoulder pads (I forget what they're called, sorry) or camouflage gear. A factory, oil drums, and slicers. These are all a similar theme too, no? If you critique DKC2 for it to boaster 1, it doesn't feel right. I really didn't like your point about the bonus stages. The bonus stuff in DKC1 is cryptic and lame most of the time. Stuff like the bonus room in a bonus room where you have to specifically go for the worst reward so you can obtain it is just stupid. Other levels like Orang-utan Gang have like 5 bonus stages, something DKC2 at it's most never does. Most stages in DKC1 have about 3 as well. The bonuses are almost all the same and I don't feel excited to find them. If you get 3 of the golden tokens of the Animal Buddies too, you also lose progress in a stage. I found myself avoiding them more often than not because it was such a bummer to get them. The DKC2 bonus rooms are all personalized with aiming the player to try a different thing. And of course the stages for collecting bonus content are difficult? Difficulty in games is a curve. Things are expected to get harder as you go further ingame to test the player. If you've managed to collect everything in the base game, I think a hard experience for the bonus world is y'know, expected...? I agree that losing your lives/coins and forcing you to pay up cash for saving is just... bad. You're 100% right. Overall, I did appreciate the video, but I felt like some of these were in fact off-base as you said. I did appreciate watching this video because I can see you still like this game. It wasn't baseless and senseless bashing. There was some genuine critique and mentioned some of what I found frustrating or subpar about the game as well. I know I'm a year late though...

I wanted to wait until I was finished watching this video to leave a comment, but I had to stop in the middle of the final Black Knight fight to say this: your writing is absolutely remarkable. I studied Creative Writing at university for 5 years and the level of articulation, description, vocabulary, and prose flow you demonstrate is absolutely top notch. As a writer it was a bit cloying when I noticed you were doing it so often, but I heavily suspect this level of raw skill on display is what nets you a good chunk of your viewerbase. Beyond that, this video is amazingly well-made and articulates a great deal about the series that I love. I am curious on one point, however; how did you miss the influence of NES Ducktales? I'm not asking in a negative way, somehow after replaying this game 3 times I only just realized it now, but it's arguably the second biggest if not first biggest influence on the game in regards to level design and sheer mechanical handling. Got a subscribe from me and looking forward to watching the rest of this series. <3

Thank you! I try to keep the twee to a minimum but you know how it goes. Sadly, I have so little experience with the NES catalog that most pioneers of great games like this are only vaguely known to me. I am happy to say I have played Ducktails since this release and I give it a little more due in my Zelda II video.

Funny story I have with Shovel Knight. When I first bought the game on a Macbook using Crossver fot controller support, the game had a glitch where the first stage was sped up by 2x speed. That meant I had to go through the plains while having the least amount of control on my movements. Yeah, I just fixed the Vsync and it went back to normal, but not before having my ass handed to me by Black Knight NINETEEN DIFFERENT TIMES.

Man, so above all, great video, well edited. Entitled to your opinion. Really wish there were more reviews that mentioned the Ice Beam is actually kino in SR. or in most games tbh. This happens in Prime as well and it annoys me. The Beam missile Combo works on pretty much everything not just Metroids. AND also you can use the counter button to smash frozen enemies. It feels way better to do in Dread but it's in both games. Sorry that just triggers me every time, and I prefer it to the beam being stacked because it feels boring in terms of combat options imo. Samus Returns' combat is actually super deep and there's things about it I am kinda sad Dread simplified in terms of the weapon switching. Anyway rant over sorry you had to be on the receiving end of that lmao.
