These comparative videos are very helpful! It is a dream of mine for my children and myself to become fluent in Spanish. Hoping to utilize one or some of these programs to aid in that! Thanks for making this content:)🎉

Duolingo is changing. They removed the review button and now have a pay increase to participate in the videos and phone calls.

Always great reviews! I'm still trying to decide on a platform. I never heard of Modly and the price seems decent. Thanks again!

Unfortunately, the diction and clarity of the 'native' speakers on Pimsleur Italian is appalling. For example, roughly halfway through Lesson Five, where the 'native' male speaker says "Would you like to drink something?" is completely unintelligible, spoken fast and very slurred. The same happens throughout the course. Alas, I've had to constantly use the Bing browser translation tool (which is better than Google's version) to decipher what is supposedly being said. It's as if no one is supervising these low-quality voice actors during the recording sessions, nor even checking the final product before release. Unfortunately, this is also the case with other languages in the Pimsleur range, such as Castillian Spanish and, worst of all, the Swedish option, which is diabolical from the very start. Add to this the poor audio quality, which sounds as if its being projected through a blanket, thus degrading the higher frequencies necessary for clarity. Consequently, I've had to load every lesson into an audio editor and boost the 4khz and 2 khz ranges (and adding translations from the Bing translator) before saving them all to a better quality MP3 file, all of which is incredibly time consuming.

Thanks for sharing! Learning Italian is a big goal of mine, so I appreciate you bringing awareness to all the places it’s spoken. Unfortunately microstates like San Marino and Vatican City get underrepresented.

Mango can be used completely free of charge through one’s membership in a participating library system. You need only enter the ID number from your library card, and Mango will then grant full access - again, assuming your local library is a participant in this program. (Alas, my library system in Minneapolis is not, but many are.) Mango offers features which are unique to the language learning industry, and for this reason, it makes a great complement to Babbel. However, if you were to choose only a single app, between these two options I agree with Guide2Fluency that Babbel is the way to go. -Jeff M

I don’t think duolingo should ever be used as a sole resource. It’s fine as a supplemental resource but on its own isn’t that great in my opinion.
@Guide2Fluency19 күн бұрын
We agree! But as a supplement to some of the other resources we mentioned here, we think it could still help on the way to a threshold level. Thanks for watching!

I think, Duolingo is a good addition to another source. Busuu's courses vary in quality. Russian A1 is pretty good, but the rest of the Russian course is just a fancy vocab app. Dutch is a much better course, Italian I just started. But the community didn't worked for Dutch, didn't get any help for weeks. The Russian community is very active, so again, it depends a lot on the target language. Depending on the target language my favorite is LingoDeer - for Russian and Italian (which I just started about a week ago; Dutch isn't offered yet). The new Memrise courses are also a good addition....
@ClaudiaEhrhardt20 күн бұрын
As I have a LingoDeer lifetime subscription, I use LingoDeer for Italian, too. Already finished LingoDeer Russian and reviewing it now. Additionally I use Busuu (freemium) and ReWord Italian. The mix (except LingoDeer) worked fine for me with Dutch. And as Lingopie is adding Dutch soon, it was a good choice for me. Again I decided for lifetime subscription.

Duolingo is good for nothing. It's an ad platform disguised as an educational tool. The error rates and drop out rates are high. They will spam you into oblivion. Use a fake email and ad-blockers. There are some scripts and ad-blockers designed just to handle Duolingo. Best advice: Just stay clear and use other alternatives. There are plenty of free classes right her on KZbin.

Duolingo is fun and some extra practice, but it couldn't teach me Japanese. I have recently switched to Tokini Andy's website which walks you through the Genki books, but also has additional content. It's helped me so far.

I completely agree that Duolingo isn’t the most effective language learning tool, especially if someone’s target language is difficult for non-native learners to master, like Japanese. While it’s fun to use as a casual supplemental tool, I think it’d be more productive to use other resources like the ones you mentioned. Thanks for the helpful recommendations!
