I use both Duolingo and Pimsleur. I agree that you'll get the most out of it if you use both apps at the same time, especially if you're learning a new alphabet. Duolingo is excellent at this; I can already read phonetically in my target language very well, and I only started studying last October. However, it wasn't teaching me how to *speak* my target language, so even though I could understand a lot, I would freeze up whenever I talked to a native speaker. I knew all this vocabulary, but I couldn't even put a sentence together. Once I started using Pimsleur, I became much more confident in speaking the language. However, their speaking tool is heavily reliant on transliteration instead of teaching you the actual alphabet. At the end of the day, it's six of one, half a dozen of the other.

great comparison I’ve heard that pimsleur is good for conversations and duolingo for vocabulary
