Sound signature is different. Tascam sounds smoother and more natural than zoom. Some frequencies are more emphazied in zoom while tascam not. That’s why the room tone could also be heard in tascam. The differences would led to a different treatment in eq editing. This have nothing to do with self noise. If we want to compare self noise, we should compare f6 with tascam portacapture.😅

I just got the Zoom F3 after many years using the DR60d MkII that I really like. I did a similar test trying to keep everything but the recorders as equal as possible recording simultaneous takes of various sounds and I am hard pressed to hear much difference. Here is the test if anyone is interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmazY2qLiM6ql7Msi=91TqceorJbAaCfJo

Excellent. A few extra top shots of the dials would be helpful as a double screen. Thanks!

Just ordered one. Zoom has just been so reliable for all the weddings that I shoot. I've never had a problem with them.

I would never shoot anything other than BRAW with a BM cam. The difference between BRAW and pro Rez is a lot.

If you simply adjust the volume using headphones on a MAC by one click using Sony MDR-7506's - its the same. Zoom is just quieter than Tascam by one apple click. Im not sure where this experiment could have been made more neutral. Thoughts?

Thanks for the comparison, is there any reason why you put the NGT2 into a different input to the other two. Thanks

Thanks for this info! I am looking to upgrade my audio from a Rode Lavalier GO Lapel Mic. I create talking-head KZbin videos in a fairly well-treated room and plan to upgrade to a boom mic above my head. I would like to find the best mic that I can plug straight into camera (Fuji XT3), so I don’t have to sync audio in post. I’m considering the Rode VideoMic NTG, NGT4+, and Sennheiser MKE 600. Which of these mics do you think would be better for my application? I have heard the MKE 600 and others may have better audio quality (but I would be powering them via 3.5mm, not XLR), but I wonder if the difference would justify getting that over the Rode- which has a power system that I can more easily charge, is cheaper, and seems to sound great. The Rode also has a gain knob on the mic so I could avoid using the camera’s gain. My KZbin channel is called Hope Through Prophecy in case you would like to see my current setup. Thanks for any help!

Batteries: Depends on the ampere (how much energy they got in them). I use 4x AA with 2500mAh ("eneloop pro") on my ZoomH6. Can record a whole concert with 6 mics. If you've 12 of these you can even charge the first 4 before the last ran out, easily. :) (4x2500=10.000mAh, the big pack you use should've only around 7850mAh) Important thing: Never use batteries from the supermarket :D They don't tell you their mAh for a reason ;)

Inside the longer micros will sound darker since the reflective high frequencies will be canceled out by the design. Indoors, or in small rooms the pencil mics are better for the job. You need to test the NT"G"s outside to see if there magic works. So if the NTG3 is dark inside, it might be great, if not the best of them, outside.

NTG2 sounds so good.. if you want bass you can just turn it up in post production. If you can EQ all the mics wouldn't they ultimately sound the same?

Very interesting video. Thank you I am not an expert because I just like to shoot. I'd like to ask a questio please, hoping someone experienced will answer me. 1) I only make documentaries in remote areas, around the world. 2) I travel alone. 3) I like to film in 4K 50p 10bit. 4) I would like to get the same or slightly better video quality than the GH5. 5) I would like a room that is easy to use. Which room do you think is the best for me? I could also accept a small camcorder, but only if it has excellent image quality. I thought of Blackmagic because it was small but then I realized that maybe it's not for me. Thank you very much for the advice.

The Tascam seemed to pick up a room tone a bit more than the Zoom F6 did. It was hard to hear the difference, but when I put on my studio headphones I could hear it.

Thanks you for comparison. NTG3 has really radio-voice timber. I like it. Hovever NTG4+ is half cheaper and still very good. Is there possibility to have similar sound (like NTG3) with NTG4+ ?? If yes, how ? What device I need ? Equaliser ? (preamplifier like DR-60D MKII) ? Thanks you very much !

didn't hear a god damn difference, they all sounded exactly the same lol.... *edit* I put on headphones and I could hear the the noise you were talking about from the NTG2. However it isn't bad a simple denoiser will remove that vocals still sounded good. NTG3 does sound better though.
