I've never heard this instrument played in such manner, in Serbia there is a very similar instrument as you already know, but the traditional playing style has nothing to do with this, Im guessing the same goes for Albania. Very refreshing and interesting, great work from composing to video editing, Im hoping and looking forward to similar works from you

hello I bought a hulusi with an A key. And I don't know anything about it. Can I play the same finger patterns as you even though you have an F key? Do you know where I could find information on hulusi with an A key? THANKS ! great video

You are in error my dear very talented friend. The Low Whistle is an English invention and derives from the old Anglo-Saxon Whistles of the dark ages. It is merely popular in Irish music. As an Anglo-Cymru, (I have family in both camps) I feel strongly about this. We don't get much Folk music credit, but we deserve this one. Although an honourable mention to Finbar Furey, would be in order.

I want to make this, may I have the notes for a standard tongue drum?
@narnodel22 ай бұрын
There is no "standard" tongue drum, you can choose the notes you want ! Or use the same notes as me.

I play the Hulusi but am confused about Key. Mine says it is a G. However starting all all holes covered (Lowest note) the scale is D E F# G A B D E, Of course that is the G note scale - just stars on D. A little confuing. Thanks for the video. !!
@narnodel22 ай бұрын
Yes a lot an eastern wind instruments start on the fifth note of the scale. That's the case for the Hulusi, but also for the Indian bansuri for example. The note shown on the instrument is the note you achieve by closing the left hand holes only.

Where does this instrument originate from?
@Loonrise-hh4jv3 ай бұрын
I found it in a flea market, covered with rust. It is an old french brand "La scie musicale", I guess from the early 20th century.

unbelievable talent. the mix sounds surprisingly like a chamber, was it as simple as panning and reverb?

Yes it was, and some EQ. But I’m not very satisfied with the sound of the strings on this one, I have discovered better technique since then…

You have to notice the symbol of Amalthea (a-mal-dhia) and snake (Cadmus) sailing the river of Hades on that string while singing epos for dead heroes. Well done 🇦🇱

I need more information on this. The high tones on this sound nothing like the lahuta/gusle. I also noticed that your string seems to be going under the bridge rather than on top of it (or is it the older style where it is drilled through?). Have you adapted the lahuta to get these smooth sounds? Maybe also changed the string? There was a famous Serbian cellist who played the gusle in this manner (and with an orchestra) in the '80s, but even his high notes had that signature warble/tremolo/scraping that this instrument is known for. This almost sounds like a rabab or one of the other eastern variants which have lost their horse-hair in exchange for steel strings. Please share more information about how you've achieved this sound.
@narnodel24 ай бұрын
Thank you for your very interesting questions ! You are right about the hole drilled in the bridge, this is the case on this instrument. A friend of mine has a lahuta with the string passing at the top of the bridge, like a violin. But I don't think that changes the sound very much. About the high notes, the only adaptation I made was to make the string thin by removing some hairs. If I remember well, I only had about 20-30 hairs in my string for this recording, which allowed me to achieve high notes. By adding hairs I can easily play a fifth lower than that. I also cheated (a bit) : I never record the sound and the video at the same time. And for the sound recording, I used a violin bow which gives better control on the pressure and longer notes. But I decided to play with the traditional bow for the video ! Nevertheless, that doesn't change the sound very much, it is just a little bit easier for me. Another thing that changes the sound : the mixing. I added reverb, an equalization to boost the high frequencies... I hope I answered your questions !

@@narnodel2Thanks for sharing this thorough response. I had guessed that the recording might have been done with a violin bow. Fantastic work! Thanks for sharing this with us.
