Something i feel i need to comment is about Valinor. It wasn't a completely idyllic haven the way you maybe think. Without reading the Silmarillion it's impossible to know what happened there with Feanor and his sons. Feanor was even banished for a time for drawing a weapon on his own kin. There was definitely strife there and we only view the elves as these perfectly angelic creatures due to Peter Jackson's movies (which i love) but there were certainly some absolutely terrible and vindictive elves. Not to mention the Kinslaying at Alqualondë 😬 I would highly recommend reading the Silmarillion, it's absolutely amazing. It has the tale of Beren and Luthien, The Children of Hurin and the Fall of Numenor. I read it at least once a year, it's thrilling and heartbreaking all in one.

Looks like you are trying to fix the unfixable yet again. This is what an editor's work is like, I guess. On the topic of fixing Galadriel, there was an interesting video few months ago arguing that Frieren is what Galadriel could've been is she was written more competently. That video obviously doesn't talk about reconciling the lore since Frieren is a character from a different story. The video in question: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5LQaHVsdpKLf5I

1:00 - Just want something different for a little bit? And _THIS_ is what you decided upon?!?! Lol. I'm solidly on the opinion that RoP actually out shone WoT for idiot dialog, ill thought out plotlines, and a horrendous amount that just didn't make sense, the common type, if there is such a thing anymore! My interpretation of what Galadriel says to Frodo: - "In place of a dark lord, you will have a queen": As another mentioned here, you'd have one tyrant for another. - "but beautiful, and terrible as the dawn": She would abolish all darkness, regardless of consequence. The dawn cares not for the shine of the stars. Not all things in the dark are evil. - "treacherous as the sea": The sea is unpredictable. I think here she recognizes the the power of the Ring, combined with hers, would be unpredictable, corruptible, likely uncontrollable, but guided by her, it would destroy all evil. (Nuclear bomb, anyone? It does the job, but how it does it is devastating). - "All shall love me and despair": All would love her for conquering the dark, but despair because she would take away freedom to do so, she would bulldoze right over "choice" for the people to accomplish her ultimate goal.

I love Avatar to death, I mean, it has Uncle Iroh in it, one would have to be soulless to not like it, but that being said, the way war is depicted is a bit juvenile. Wars aren't fought because one side is 'bad', wars aren't fought for revenge. Wars are fought for power because power brings security. How wars form resembles natural phenomena a lot more than it does interpersonal conflicts. People who know nothing of wars get confused about this pretty much 100% of the time, they think that wars are fought for anger and revenge; they're not. War is its very own beast with its own laws and logic, and once aroused, there's no stopping it. Look at our own real world, we're headed towards a more dangerous world with more war, not less. Here in Europe the war has already begun. Russia has transformed into a war-economy and other European nations are taking steps towards the very same direction. There's war in Israel and more of it brewing in Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and Afghanistan. When and if that flares up the entire world is going to feel it as trade is going to become a lot more expensive, considering that a lion's share of all maritime trade in the world flows through the waters of that region. People really have no idea how bad things are going to get, and I haven't even begun talking about the population collapse of the industrial world and all the instability that is going to come with it.

I became disillusioned the moment they showed a bunch of elf kids bullying each other in Valinor. Even young elves are supposed to be almost supernaturally calm and good people. And Valinor just felt like an averagely nice place. The elves felt entirely normal and human. There was nothing ethereal or magical about most of them. Even Legolas was shown to be above the other fellowship in many ways. He was the youngest and most grounded of the elves we meet in the main series.

Galadriel is not a newbie by the time the serie begin. She was already known for her diplomacy and magic abilities directed at protecting here realm. Making her dislikeable is the worst part of her character that break everything. They also removed her husband that should have traveled with her. Her role should have been like the trainer or captain of a sport team that win the cup.

Even for a video called "what I would have done differently", *I feel like the substance of this was more about what entirely different target you would have aimed at, rather an exploration of how you would have gotten RoP closer to the target they chose.* You'll take something like them not explaining how she became a warrior, and declare that a failure. Fixing that would take an entire season devoted to that arc! *That they didn't do that is not a failure, it simply wasn't their priority.* Other so-called "failures" include: -Galadriel being driven be revenge, not reluctant duty (how is that bad?) -Galadriel being a bad leader (what's wrong with demonstrating she's overzealous?) -Galadriel not being conflicted about going to Valinor (see above) -Galadriel "behaving irrationally" (*ding* that is a CinemaSins style critique I thought we had moved past as a society) *Just because something is misaligned with a preference does not make it a bad decision.* We don't need to see Galadriel save any cats, pursuing evil when everyone's sleeping easy is a positive moral good.

Galadriel's "superpower" is beauty. When people see her their hearts are filled with love (maybe in a way Gandalf fills hearts with hope). She could direct this love at herself if she was greedy. But she is not (unless she takes the ring) and thus passes the test. Also, her desire for the ring is not purely about greed or power. Her realm exists in a suspension of time which provides a haven for elves. This is due to her ring Nenya. If Frodo succeeds, it would invalidate Nenya and Lothlorian would immediately begin to decay and it would be the end for the elves. But if she takes it, she can delay this indefinitely. It's a moral dilemma. Going back to beauty/love as a superpower, this is pretty core to Tolkien's message of love and friendship. So when RoP portrays her as an aggressive warrior princess, it runs contrary to her character. That said, I don't hat this direction because it allows for her to change into the Galadriel we know later. Tolkien even describes her as being very athletic and ambitious. So it makes sense to me. Believe me, I have a lot of complaints about the first season but this isn't one of them.

I feel like your interpretation of Galadriel having power is wrong. She's literally warning them that she'd be a dictator, get corrupted by the power and turn evil. "Treacherous like the sea" AKA calm one moment and furious the other. They would love me and despair, because they would have no other choice than to love her. She would rule like a God among men. Eternally living, immeasurably powerful. The ring corrupts all, including Galadriel. In time even the most powerful, the most innocent and well meaning fall for its power.

My favorite thing about the show is, that Community season 1/ episode 19 (Beginner Pottery): VAGUE SPOILERS has so many elements of the RoP show. A evil with a secret past, great research about this past, instead of smithing its pottery. The (almost) crossing to the evil side of the main character, 2 flashbacks of familymembers who give the character the main theme of the episode - but the second one is fake, a fake wound - more dramatic sailing (drowning) with a better texted line about the fact that you cant argue with the sea... and all in all a better moral. Dan Harmon would have written a great RoP. Would recommend watching the episode with this parallels in mind.

For me, the "and despair" part means everyone can do nothing BUT love her. Like moth and flame. No one could look away. Their hearts would long for her and be crushed. In German, I would say Herzschmerz / heartache. When I read the books the first time, it was in german. I don't know if Tolkien had notes for this part as well (e.g. the elves are called elben in german bc he felt the german word elfen was to close associated with fairies), but the translation of the "and despair" part is "und verzweifeln", which can be translated to despair of course, but also to "become desparate" and "exasperated". great video btw ;)

Galadriel doesn't desire power because "she doesn't have it", she has quite a bit of it. Power however is addictive to the extreme; anyone who has ever tasted even a bit of true power can attest to that. Galadriel knows power corrupts, but her heart still desires it. Thoughts don't give birth to desires, desires give birth to thoughts. You don't need a convoluted psychological reason to desire power. In that way, power is very similar to love. Everyone desires it, even the ones who think they don't.

Galadriel will diminish because the power of Nenya is tied to the One Ring, and letting Frodo go and not claiming the Ring can only lead to two outcomes; either Sauron takes back what is his and Galadriel will be forced to take her ring off permanently or fall completely under Sauron's influence, or Frodo will succeed and the One Ring will be destroyed, which will lead to Nenya losing its power. Either way, Galadriel's source of might and power will cease to be, her ability to preserve the ageless forests of Lothlorien will wane and disappear.
@khatack
@khatack 23 сағат бұрын
I think you overestimate Galadriel's Power quite a bit. The Wizards are pretty much angelic beings themselves, while Galadriel being merely an elf. Gandalf, Saruman, Radaghast and the Blue Wizards, where ever they may be, existed before the world was even created. As far as Elves go, Glorfindel would probably give Galadriel a run for her money even with Galadriel drawing heavily upon Nenya. Galadriel is one of the significant powers in Middle Earth, but she's definitely not second only to Sauron. Gandalf on the other hand is inherently a more powerful creature than any elf, and he's also the bearer of Narya. Elrond is younger and maybe inherently not as powerful as Galadriel, but being the bearer of Vilya, he shouldn't be immediately discounted either. I think the only creature in Middle Earth who could be considered to be "second only to Sauron in might" would be Gandalf the White augmented by Narya.

You should remember that Boromir was highly influenced by the One Ring, so he wasn't really thinking clearly in the first place. Boromir wasn't nearly as prepared to face the evil of the ring as Aragorn was, not to mention Aragorn was quite a bit older and wiser than Boromir. Boromir falling under the rings influence wasn't a moral failing, he simply wasn't wise and strong enough, probably not even knowing the extent of the rings power to influence minds, leaving him pretty much defenseless against the rings influence. Remember that even Frodo fails in the end, and the wise and the powerful do not even dare to touch the ring for they rightly fear that they could not resist the ring if they do. Poor Boromir never even had a chance.
@TheSwordAndThePenREFLECTIONS
@TheSwordAndThePenREFLECTIONS 18 сағат бұрын
Haha! Yeah. I remember. But there is something to be said about having a humble heart, as well. I think Boromir was a noble man, but his pride was what made him more vulnerable than Faramir. I think the ring is not capable of creating goodness. Only the illusion of it.
@khatack
@khatack 10 сағат бұрын
@@TheSwordAndThePenREFLECTIONS Well, to be fair, Boromir did shoulder quite a bit more responsibility in his life than say a hobbit. He was the son of the steward of Gondor and had lived with the burden of power and responsibility his entire life. Couple that with his desperate need to protect his people against an enemy he knows they can't possibly triumph against. Remember that by the time of the Fellowship, Boromir had already been fighting a losing war against Mordor for quite some time. The fact that Boromir resisted the ring as long as he did and even after was able to redeem himself speaks volumes about his virtue. Also Faramir had been mentored by Gandalf quite a bit and had the benefit of hindsight regarding Boromir's death, not to mention that the period which he was in contact with the ring was WAY shorter. With Boromir, the ring had ample time to build its influence. I think you're still selling Boromir short by miles. For someone in his position, Boromir was plenty humble and I really wouldn't feel comfortable judging him for failing against a power no one could resist. He wasn't an ancient being of myths and legends like Legolas, he hadn't been raised and mentored by elves for his entire life nor had the venerable age of Aragorn, he didn't have the inherent resistance to domination of the Dwarves, nor the luxury of simple existence of the Hobbits. Would Faramir have held as long as his brother if their positions had been reversed? Not necessarily. As for the ring creating goodness, you're correct that it can't create goodness. In fact the ring cannot create, period. It enhances the inherent power and might of the wearer, it can control and it can dominate and it can twist and it can pervert, but it can't create. Remember that part when Frodo is attacked by Gollum, and once Frodo grabs hold of the Ring, Gollum becomes powerless against his will? The "If you touch me ever again you shall be cast your self into the fires of doom" part. That's Frodo using the power of the One Ring, and it could be interpreted as Frodo laying a curse on Gollum, considering that Gollum does touch Frodo again and is cast into the fires of doom as a result. That's the Ring's authority over the world. The animated Return of the King, I think from 1980, illustrates the book version of the scene more closely than the Peter Jackson films. I really like how it is portrayed: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aauwYmiJj85jpKM You can see Frodo turning from an exhausted and weakened little hobbit into an almost majestic figure, capable of commanding Gollum with an authority he cannot resist, giving just a small glimpse into just how powerful the ring actually is.

@khatack I don't think lowly of Boromir, and it is precisely for the reasons you mentioned. We know little about Galadrial in this age, but do know this: she was driven by ambition. Someone wrote Tolkien to ask how Galadrial was able to resist the temptation of the Ring when Frodo offered it to her freely. He replied that the Ring had read in her a desire for power, and had tempted her with that, but that was a desire she had already faced within herself and in the end abandoned (Only after abandoning it did she meet Celeborn, fall in love and marry him becoming Queen of Lothlorean).

@@TheSwordAndThePenREFLECTIONS With her at the start pursuing the last of Morgoth's army despite a lack of support (and borderline counter to orders it seems like) I was wondering if that was where they were going with that. "Destroyed the final remnants of the army of the great evil" especially if it turned out to be a credible threat that others didn't believe it would be quite the achievement, and likely lead to promotion / respect / fame / power. Would also inform he diving off the ship at the last minute, as returning to the Undying Lands would mean giving up on her ambitions. It's absolutely something that _could_ be motivating her character through this, and I think it's a better watch with that in mind. But I'm sure they didn't have rights to letters either. Frankly, as a project, it was kinda doomed from the moment they didn't get rights to _any_ of the relevant materials.

@velinion1 It wasn't so much the diving off at the last minute that bugged me. It was that she just seemed to get on the ship without ever responding like that was something she would agree to do. But yeah.... they should have just adapted something they DID have the rights to. Such a mistake to make stuff up.

Importantly, in the Books, unlike Boromir, Faramir resists the Ring's temptation, gives Frodo and Sam good advice and suppies, and sends them on their way.

Yes! The brothers are an excellent sampling of the "test" and what it takes to be resistant to the temptation.

I highly recommend checking out Tolkien Untangled's video "How 'The Rings of Power' Should Have Been Written | On Adapting the Second Age - Seasons 1 & 2" kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGqxg2NsYraniJo He outlines an adaptation with the same restrictions and ends up doing multiple "seasons". The videos and story outlines are actually very interesting and entertaining and really get you excited for what could have been. He details some great themes and important moments.

I think that you don't have the full picture. I think reading The Silmarillion will change your perspective. For example I think that her test was renouncing her want to rule over a kingdom, and my reasoning comes from events in Silmarillion.

I was not making an analysis based on the books, but rather the PJ films, since RoP is not allowed to adapt The Silmarillion, and it is rsther obvious that Amazon wanted to make a prequel to fit with those films. From what information I had of her from the PJ films, I did think she wanted to rule... but not for the sake of controlling others. She is wise and compassionate and caring, so I thought it would fit more that she would believe herself capable of "properly" ruling and protecting the world. But even the best intentions would result in evil succeeding, whether it be by the mere continued existence of it, or by her rule causing division, or by her turning evil.

I think the "and despair" comes from a self awareness -- a realization that allows her to release the temptation and refuse the ring that she wants. That she can see herself SO CLEARLY as this queen with all control who makes everything right in the world, and she knows that the same people she wants to help would be crushed by her rule.
@bidossessi
@bidossessi Күн бұрын
This right here. She would be a tyrant in white, as opposed to a tyrant in black, but a tyrant nonetheless. She has the foresight to see where giving into the temptation to take that power would lead her, as it would exacerbate that character flaw (hubris) and make it overbearing.

The main problem I had watching that first episode is: I read most, if not all of Tolkien's works several times, including the compilation of his letters. So from the get go that person on screen did feel nothing like that heavenly creature who was there before the Sun and the Moon even existed.

Yeah. I think the elves in RoP felt like pointy-eared humans. I never got the impression they were super old and had centuries of experience. The concerns of a thousand year-old immortal being shoukd not be comparable to the concerns of a regular human.
