I've seen later versions where the classical guitar part was totally different from the recorded version, it was a different guitar player and he sucked he over did it and ruined the song! Happy to say that must be Peter White here and he did a great job!

Saw Al and company several times over the years. Free concert in the park in Thousand Oaks, CA circa '88, then several times in Seattle. That's the great Dave Camp blowin' down the house w/that sax and Robin Lamble on bass. Peter White used to play guitar in the band too. Met Al at each show and a more regular guy you could not ask for. Super down to earth and great performer. The guy ahead of me in the meet 'n greet line asked Al "when are you coming back" and Al kind of laughed and said "I just got here!"

Wow, I was 19 when this song was recorded and I had not heard it until now. Such a tragic end, after surviving 4 years of hell on the Russian front the soldier is imprisoned by his own countrymen for no reason. And to this day, Navalny dies in Putin's prison.

Al Stewart is one of the most under rated writer and lyricist of the past 50 years! Year of the cat, time passages, roads to Moscow. Just to name a few totally Awesome 👌

I was 5 y.o. (1975) when my older sister heard this song. Several years later I found it on the internet and I was fascinated by it. Then I learned that Stewart was born on September 5. Like me. 😃

Ok but what does this song have to do with ,sailing, archers theme & the greatest American hero,....sultans of swing ,the land down under , Im not sure but I feel like sometimes, they where trying to turn us on to something esotaric,......lil clue s to something unfathomable but extraordinary & blessed with grace ,.......for the ones. That....? .. Augh...that where smart & humble enough ,respectfully enough , to not try ,"& take th man upstairs out of a t.....

I assumed the 'year of the cat' in this song was 1975, now confirmed, but surprised it has nothing to do with Vietnam. That was the year that war finally ended.

There's something hauntingly beautiful and sad about this song, is beautiful! But sad because it's based on a true story....
