Utterly compelling story telling with passionate singing and guitar playing. Wonderful performance, thanks for sharing this.

I was fortunate to see Al several times during this period and his concerts were very intimate and sucked you into his world as he expanded the background to each song with anecdotes about them. The impact on the audience was huge and I am sure many like me could feel the effect for weeks after. Genius.

Dear God, this is absolutely EPIC!!!!! Even as a small child I was able to hear to heartache, drama, and even panic in these lyrics. There are great songwriters, then there are genius songwriters, then there is Al Stewart.

"Freedom seems to be everything to me" is such a great line. Everyone feels this way at some point, only to find that we have been lying to ourselves. We very much need to know that we are special in someone else's eyes.

Al Stewart is a fatalist, never a big self-promoter. His attitude is that if he's good enough, people will find HIM. Thank God, many of us have. BUT, he is the greatest under-appreciated composer in the world. His shows are still wonderful, leaving new attendees wondering how they ever missed how great this guy is.

I bet many successful singer songwriters are bafled by this guys lack of mainstream success... AS is like a master poet / writer who never bothered to to get published...genius!

Wow, Night of the Fourth of May... 40 years ago. I've been a huge fan of his for 42 years now, ever since Zero She Flies. Where does the time go? Talk about Time Passages, crikey.

Unbelievable!! Talk about one of the best musician/writers ever! I feel so sad for the people that don't know this man's music. From Clifton in the rain (babysitter Images) and down thorough the years, the scope and breath of his beautifully crafted lyrics and melodies are absolutely astounding! Beautiful, beautiful music!! Thanks so much for this video!

It appears there are a lot of Al fans here and rightly so as the man is nothing less than a card carrying genius and still going so I have a little exercise for you all. It seems simple on the surface but just try it. Name your five favourite Al Stewart songs. Go on, have a go. I stopped somewhere between 15 and 20 as I just could not decide between them. I was going chronologically and wasn't even up to Year of the Cat! Damn, I have at least five from Love Chronicles alone. His back catalogue is completely amazing. Incidentally, great recording and the sound quality is so good from that period when it could be a bit hit and miss live, even for the BBC. Thanks for that runningman.

its good to see him sitting down like he used to do when I started seeing him. there was a very good version of this at cousins folk club in london in february 72. francis monkman of curved air played a terry riley style piece and john martyn in white boiler suit looked after the sound system.

@christopherfrost I am working on an Al Stewart songbook (for private use only) with lyrics, chords (and tabs for the instrumental tunes) The first three albums are ready, and at this very moment I am working on I'm Falling and Night of the 4th of May. The arrangement will be ready in about two weeks. In the meantime, check out Al Stewart.com for the tabs. It's not what Al played though, it's in D minor instead of E minor, so you will have to transpose the song.
