I'm sure the full goes into more detail but the ramming action wasn't the only part of his recommendation. The captain put his crew first, helping men to the ropes aboard Hipper and saving them before himself. When his time came to climb out his strength failed as the freezing sea had taken its toll. He would be honoured with the Victoria Cross posthumously after the war.

Thank you for your account, which highlights well the bravery of the Captains of Ardent and Acasta. The reasons for continued secrecy by the British Government regarding the sinking of Glorious, Acasta and Ardent remain shrouded in mystery. Secrets that are not scheduled to be released until 2041. Many are waiting for that release. My Uncle died on Glorious and my family still awaits that information. As well as failing to recognise the bravery of Ardent and Acasta, the Royal Navy, to their shame, refused to recognise the crews of the three ships in an official memorial until 2002. The families were not able to claim the Polar service medal, to which the crew were entitled, until the early 2000s. This belated recognition was finally dragged across the line by the persistent interventions of Alan Beith and Tam Dalyell in Parliament. There are details surrounding this naval disaster for Britain that are embarrassing to the Royal Navy and the British Government. The actions of the Devonshire, in particular, are questionnable and this was discussed in the parliamentary debate about Glorious's sinking in 1999. There is more to this. Surely this drama and the heroics of Ardent and Acasta would be worthy of a film?

You know, Viet Minh's army was an Army of Volunteers. The soldiers were peasants. The officers were educated ones. General Giap was a teacher. I grew up a few minutes away from his villa in Hanoi.

It is funny to hear French names for Vietnamese locations. In Vietnam, there is a saying "Navarre Plan", meaning a failed plan. Once the mother of my classmate visited my mother. They were talking about the parents' association, then about their private lives. I overheard my classmate's mother telling my mother "it is a Navarre plan, you know" ( about something that she had not succeeded).

Everytime they say merchant shipping or merchant ships.. these are civilians, are they not? The equivalent today being the kinda ships Iran was shooting at?

Similar to the story of USS laffy the destroyer that would not go down, Ohio did the same feat but the Germans and Italians tried this tactic but failed
@charlieperaltafКүн бұрын
I agree that they weren't battlecruisers, but also not battleships, they were more likely cruiser destroyers, or "large cruisers" like the Alaska Class, (those ships were just a bit smaller than an Iowa), but in case of the german ones, they had heavy armor.

As an Englishman surrounded by water, never further than a few hours away, I would like to thank the men who built Ohio and the many other ships. We do tend to forget merchant ships, but without them all would have been lost. All the ships carried a mixed cargo, many with explosives on deck. It has always saddened me that some time after the war the British Navy were asked to leave by 'let's just say' a left wing government. Malta more than deserved the George Medal.
@davidelliott5843Күн бұрын
Operation Pedestal was a tactical defeat for the British but it did achieve its stated aim (re supply ammunition and fuel to Malta. So despite the losses it was a strategic victory.
