I use a 18 year old car to tow a £1k caravan. Even keeping it that cheap i am considering giving up caravanning due to high pitch fees. No incentive to keep club membership

It seems now too expensive even to stay in b and bs in UK. I decided to use my bus pass and simply have days out. I then scout for deals and get the cheapest two weeks abroad! It's a matter of needs must! I would love a bargain camper van if younger but only for trips to festivals, airshows, country fetes etc and as a luxury spare room parked on my driveway. It's not cost effective for any other purpose.

Thanks very much for this video. I've been extremely concerned about pitch prices all year. But then if I don't go I have a caravan sitting going to waste. I've been considering buying a new caravan, but I am holding back, waiting to see what is going to happen with pitch prices. I've spent hours looking at different sites, trying to work out different permutations of nights and then giving up in frustration. We've now decided to go to France with the caravan for most of September. I'm joking that I'm going to spend £2000 to save £25 a night on pitch fees! With an ACSI card most sites will be around 19 euros.

One major item has been forgotten here... land prices. Sites in spain etc are cheaper because the cost of land is so much less. As land prices rise in the UK expect site fees to reflect that.

Caravan & Camping club site in Keswick wanted £72 a night for a bit of grass and electric. AND, they wanted to charge £3 a day per kayak to launch when they have NO upkeep of the shore to do as nature does it. Went last year and absolutely loved it. Not this year. Like someone else in a comment said “vote with your feet” We did and will not renew our membership. Bit of a do as we say Club anyway.

Cheaper to do day trips and use your own bed at home .camp site charges are even expensive if using you own tent not much cheaper than a using a caravan if a club on site the price of a pint is ridiculous rip off Britain so do day trips and save a fortune .

We got rid of our motor home 2 weeks ago. From 2000 we have gone off in our van different vans as time rocked on. Found it better abroad than UK. In this country you have to book months ahead abroad you can just turn up. Camp site fees are tremendous in UK not so dear abroad. Ok you have to pay to go abroad but we had 3 months in back & beyond travelling thru France Spain & Portugal dog also. Was brill. Brexit came & covid. Just did not want to go abroad any more. Stayed on UK sites phew so dear book it or you can not come. Huh who wants to camp in the rain cause you had to book months ahead tough luck if it rains. Got fed up will do cottages etc as got a car now. Bye bye excessive priced camp sites!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I predict in 20 years time most caravan sites will be out of business. Forced to buy EV,s who wants to tow a caravan with one of those. New younger people will do the maths and realise caravanning / motor homes are now luxury expensive holidays and will just not take up the pastime. Camping in Europe is much better value, prices per pitch just so much better and the weather is warmer.

Absolutely right it's far too expensive to motorhome or caravan in UK. I've had the same motorhome for 10 years and stopped using UK campsites 5 years ago, because even then prices were getting ridiculous. We live in Plymouth and jump on Brittany ferries to Roscoff twice a year, normally just outside peak holiday season so the ferry is a lot cheaper. The camping car aires are superb and most are free with a waste station and sometimes free water. Some of the aires that are in exclusive places you do have to pay but even in the south of France it's usually only a tenner per night. My van has a solar panel and refillable gas bottle (€7 to fill) so we're totally independent of everything but water which is always available. So when we weigh up the price of the campsites in UK and the price of the ferry to Roscoff it's a no brainer to go to France. Going via Dover Calais is a lot cheaper but we hate the trip to Dover and we include the 8 hour ferry crossing as part of the holiday. So my advice is to dump the lumbering great car and caravan set up, buy a smallish motorhome and a camper stop book, stick your bikes on the back and get across the channel. We're booked on the overnight ferry (with cabin) to Roscoff on the 27th August and can't wait to get away from this overcrowded greedy country of ours. 😢

I think some of this is unfair, when did you last purchase and land . We have 4 acres and it cost me £100,000 . If I was going to try and make a return by opening a caravan site it would need to be worth doing 😂🤷‍♂️

Camp sites will not come down all the time people are willing to book. I have just done a comparison off a caravan holiday for 2 weeks (14 Nights) and 14 nights in a hotel in Thailand plus flights. The 14 nights in Thailand came out on top as the cheaper option. Bye Bye Caravan holiday.

In April 2024 on my way home from an eight day camping trip in Europe on my motorcycle, I had an overnight stay in Ashford, Kent to break up the long journey home to Derbyshire. I paid £35 for one night's stay! I thought is was a bargain though. I love Travelodge. You are correct though, when hotel stays are comparble in price to campsites, the campsites are in trouble. I am a life-long camper, I prefer to camp rather than stay indoors. But camping is now getting expensive. It's a shame. Love and peace.

I blame all the people who selfishly think they can use all the electric they want, 'because we've paid for it' wrong, if you heat your awning and use everything electric your going way over what you've paid for, therefore someone else has to pay I E higher pitch fees.

Been away about 50 nights so far this year, average £35 a night on mostly fully serviced or good sites.. Have noticed August is the most expensive month when pitches start hitting £50 +, which hits families the most but I don't want to go when sites are packed and lively. Outside weekends and school holidays prices are reasonable. I would not advise anyone your age who can only caravan during school holidays and weekends to buy a van, but there is still a huge market for the more less tied caravanner to enjoy the life and freedom you built your KZbin channel on. Best of luck with your new career.

Hi I was just mocking around the Tube and found your site. How interesting to think other caravaners have the same thoughts re - the various fees etc relating to Caravaning. I’m a 38 yr man with the Caravan Club……and I have seen tremendous change over that time. The topic of site fees is something we could all talk about for many hours or even days. The sites…..businesses…obviously make a profit. But to charge a punter £50 ish…is absolutely bonkers. They are looking at the short term recovery from “COVID”. The long term will see them reduce services (already limited in many cases) and WILL fail as a business. They will cause job losses on a huge scale. Then cease to survive. They need to talk to each other and realise there soon to come demise.

A C and M club inspector advised a Devon CL that they were too cheap and should increase their price. This sums up the C and M club as being only money motivated and are not for the benefit of the members. I have dropped my membership, other clubs now offer better value without the highly paid aristocrats that give their prestigious names to be chairman in name only etc.

Hello , we used to caravan but the site prices became ridiculously expensive so we sold our van and three litre four times four and now use holiday lodges . These cost on average four hundred for four nights much cheaper than having to tow caravan , set up after several hours driving , now instead we just arrive unload car and put the kettle on !

Site owners are so greedy. I had a caravan on a site many years ago and the site fees were reasonable then they decided to put up the fees to a price we could not afford. Greed is killing caravaning. Bottled gas prices have gone through the roof, and electricity prices have risen so fast. I loved my caravan and I would love another one but I just can't afford one. People buy caravans then they have to rent them out to afford the fees.

I agree with what you are saying it is expensive, more so down south where we are to. CLs are great and definitely cheaper, I know you have to belong to C&M club which i think is now £50 per year. but you do get a better deal and no metered electric, only on the main club campsites which are expensive and big. around £22 -£25 for CLs but that was toilets & showers for £25. so quite good. but you are right the market is changing and not going down. other sites are charging much more for just a port -a-loo and water, couldn't even empty the toilet !. it use to be a cheap thing to do , but like you say you have to pay for your vehicle all year round and it does make you wonder,? thanks for the vlog, good to talk about.

30 odd years ago we started off under canvas with the kids ( less than a 5er per night) Then moved to a tourer (around a 10er per night at the start, 30quids at the end, 20 odd years later) Put the tourer on a seasonal at 1750quids for the season, when up in one jump to 2200quids the next one So sold up getting a static on a owner's only site at 2300 for the first season, 6 years later the fees had gone up to just above 3k So decided it wasn't worth keeping because of the times we used it so sold that too Now we're back to square one under canvas with our kids and grandkids in their canvas bungalows with us in our small 4 person tent lol

We find seasonal pitches can work well ours is for 2025 just been notified £2230 from beginning of March to the end of October which includes winter storage, WiFi, water. Electric comes in at £100 a season but once set up ie with the awning it's just a 1hr 40 mins drive no picking up from storage or leaving in the morning after rushing around and trying to get breakfast down. I feel if you use it and there's lots to do in the area or on the way home then it's worth it. Most months we go for 2 to 3 nights two or 3 times a month and a week in the holiday season

If you tot up together all the money it cost you to purchase your caravan to pay for the insurance of the caravan to pay for the maintenance of your caravan, the site fees and the cost of all the bits and pieces you buy for yearning and year out and also the heavy. Amount of fuel costs you re paying extra to toe it and then expensive. To put it on a site it would be cheaper to go to a normal hotel or be for the same cost or less. And you don't have the hassle all the problems to go with it encampsides have got way to expenses for what they are meant to be a cheap form of holiday for people who have. Little money or none is pricing. Everybody at the lower end market out of camping or going on any sort of holiday, the end result would be campsites will start shutting down. Cause no one's going to want to pay the prices I do while camping in a tent and I love it and I would not play anywhere near the mountain money you guys buys to go on a normal campsite is disgraceful, it's a rip-off.
