The z dub is garbage. There’s some moments that I do like but yeah, it had some changes, but Kai is the most accurate ever like if you don’t want to watch Dragon Ball Z in Japanese go watch Dragon Ball Kai, English dub the actors even say that they sound much better than they did back in the day
@mylesmohammed9014 күн бұрын
there's a reason a lot of the games that followed the Z story is accurate to JP version and not the funi dub version cus the og dub sucked. even the English VAs thought it was bad THANK U FOR TALKING ABOUT THE SSJ2 TRANSFORMATION It's my fav moment too, and while i like the narrator at the end better than Kai and the pacing was better than Kai's sped up version, The inner monologue made no sense and was really stupid because Gohan and 16 NEVER FUCKING INTERACTED BEFORE. Unlike Kakarot where they had a few gameplay scenes or whatever that was added in but even that was a nothing burger. so that inner monologue of Gohan's wasn't earned and should've been silent. I'm glad the Kai version kept it silent

The difference between the shows is that the eng dub sounds more like a typical saturday morning cartoon but with more violence while the original sounds like a Kung fu movies x Godzilla and Star Wars. The right way to get into it is to look at it as a "strange vintage release" also the way they talk in the show makes it more serious rather then the "americanized" way of speaking. Vegeta sounding like a '"biker idiot" rather then a noble with a superiority complex, Bulma is almost ok , Gohan is more formal and polite in original which makes his SSJ2 more "rude" when compared , Trunks is also formal and polite

My brother and I absolutely loved Star Blazers when we were kids. 2199 felt like a very touching tribute that could be enjoyed by veteran fans of the original, as well as newcomers to the franchise. You can tell that, along with the excellent animation, a lot of thought was put into the writing where they tried to address some of the original's plot holes. I agree with most of your points about characterization. As much as I appreciated the more diverse crew of the Yamato and the greater attention paid to the Gamilons overall, my biggest complaint has to be the treatment of Leader Dessler. He was such a cool, interesting antagonist in the original series. Unfortunately, he's written a little differently in the newer version and not fleshed out nearly as much. His subordinate, Dommel, received much more character development this time around. It's another one of those writing "trade-offs" you were talking about and IMO probably 2199's most glaring weakness. Nonetheless, I would still highly recommend this series to just about anyone.

It's hard to really hate one of the other. UC and SEED is Wing to 00. They're reimagining's of their most popular IPs. While I like UC, OG Gundam is just lazily following WW2. OG Gundam has more whiney kids and whiney "adults". SEED has more teen drama. I quite like Rau as a character. Sure he's crazy, but it's fun. And is insanity does have SOME reason behind it. He's not just doing this for Run. Personally i find Char kinda boring until Zeta gundam anyways. Now Kira vs Amuro.... meh... don't like either. Athrun is the fan favourite anyways. Mu vs Ramba vs Walfield.. they all have their moments. And yes.. destiny is the worst. But only after the half way point.

Good video, in the dub Goku is pretty much just a Superman ripoff. In the Japanese and the Manga Goku is a more complex character and even makes some questionable moral decisions like letting Vegeta live and giving Cell a Sensu Bean. Thankfully the Funimation cast got to redeam themselves with a much more faithful dub in Kai's dub.

@Tehutidg07 I think ryo horikawa is the best, especially in original DBZ. But Drummond is better than sabat. I think both are too raspy but Drummond's voice is a lot more unique and fitting. Sabat's generic trucker voice does not fit vegeta or piccolo. How do you look at vegeta, a buff midget prince and think he should have a super deep voice? Drummond got the scheming aspect right, as did Horikawa. But Horikawa was the only one to actually make him sound princely. Sabat does neither and is so miscast.

Sailor Moon was my first anime, english dub, of course. And I remember being about 8-9 years old, waking up at 5:30am because that's when it aired on I don't even remember on what channel, because it was well before it was on CN. I loved it back then, cheesy dialogue with subpar delivery and all. I didn't really know any better. The movies were just nostalgic joy when I first watched them. But now I look back at it and cringe. Especially when my niece is into Sailor Moon Crystal and I tried to introduce her to the original dub series. Just... yikes! I think my 'favorite' thing about the original dubs, besides the dialogue itself, was the oh so casual queer erasure. Even in the movies.

DBZ Sub VS Dub videos/debates from older fans are really fascinating to me. My first exposure to DBZ was the shitty widescreen version on DVD when I was 5 years old. On those DVDs the default audio track was the Funimation dub with the Kikuchi Score. I loved the soundtrack and for about 10 years I never even knew there was a separate American Soundtrack outside of the instrumental theme that replaces Cha La Head Cha La in that version of the dub. It's an awfully written version of the scene, but the "hope of the universe" speech feels so hollow with the American soundtrack, while Kikuchi's Genki Dama theme fits that triumphant super hero vibe Funimation was going for when they rewrote the scene. Finding out how much things were changed with Z's Dub script while also finding out that the soundtrack originally was one of the things changed makes it feel like I grew up with a strange in-between of the Japanese and Funimation versions. I should also add that the Kikuchi score was a big reason why I wanted to watch DBZ in Japanese. While the dub is available with the Japanese soundtrack the music is in pretty low quality in certain scenes, and almost every vocal and insert song were removed (With the exceptions of Battle Point Unlimited, Solid State Scouter, and the credits themes). Wanting to rewatch DBZ with a more complete and higher quality soundtrack is half the reason I watched the series in Japanese, and it's my preferred way of watching it now.

Glad you enjoyed it! I remember when it aired subbed on the International Channel, oh so long ago, and then I experienced the dub once I got the DVDs (which were among the first DVDs I ever got, back in 2001). It's certainly an interesting cast on both sides. Kōji Tsujitani and Crispin Freeman as Tylor, Shō Hayami and J. David Brimmer as Yamamoto, Yuri Amano and Rachael Lillis as Yuriko, Mugihito and Robert O'Gorman as Mifune, and more... though I will say while I like Lisa Ortiz's Azalyn, her voice for the Hanner twins does get a bit annoying. Oh, and how appropriate is it that the treacherous Prime Minister is named Wang? Because he really is one. Of course, you'll have to follow up with the OVAs. The first two-part OVA, "An Exceptional Episode (Tylor's War)", is in the style of the series, while the subsequent OVAs have a bit of a different tone, due to the change in director and animators, and a general attempt to more closely adapt the novels. Of course, it's frustrating that the last OVA ends on a huge cliffhanger, but what are ya gonna do?
