That is definitely a possibility. They sound so similar! That being said, a lot of dogs learn free a little slowly because they learn they are supposed to not move and when they are eager to please they really think hard about getting up. Thanks for taking the time to drop a comment!

So I've not used a stay command, the concept being sit means sit, or down means down, until I release them. Thoughts on that concept? None of my dogs have been taught stay, just the initial command. They do know Wait however, like when opening the door, etc.

Great question John! There is nothing wrong at all with what you are doing. We call that an "implied stay". There is no actual need for the word stay, we just find that most people are more comfortable using both words (command + stay). Sounds like you have some pretty good dogs!

@@johnnikif2 After replying earlier I realized I didn't address the wait command at all. In the video we mention that we don't want stay to turn into wait because it can ruin the overall point of the command (the squirrel example). That being said, wait as a separate command has lots of uses like you mentioned. Common ones are the front door, waiting for food, going up and down the stairs etc. We generally use wait when we plan on letting the dog go towards the exciting thing after they are released. With stay, they may not be allowed to go to the exciting thing after they are released. Thanks for sparking a conversation!

How long can you train a dog at a time at the age of 6 mos.

Great question! If we are teaching a new command we do short sessions (15-20 min). If the dog understands the command and we are working on training around distractions we will often do longer sessions ( 30-60 min).

@ thank you. This dog has just come to us and he’s a little bit rambunctious. He’s also a breed that I’m unfamiliar with and so it’s been challenging. We’re going to start working on him tomorrow. I’ve been doing a little training bits with him but nothing too aggressive or serious and it’s about time since he’s been here for six weeks. It’s time to jump on it before we lose controland he started running in the household lol thank you so much.
