Love the comparison by the way. Anecdotally, the Lincoln process was a political money grab in that the industry would be required to charcoal timber from lands that they all owned. Perhaps today it’s equivalent to the juice flows over the required chunks of charcoal and actually comes out indistinguishable from how it went in. Thoughts?
@WhiskyRiffs8 күн бұрын
I think the money grab is the requirement that bourbon must be aged in new, charred oak casks. It was a way to keep the lumber industry in business. That rule has helped Scotch, by giving those distillers access to the delicious flavors of ex-bourbon casks, but it's still not a rule that improves the quality of bourbon. As for the Lincoln process, I'm not a fan of any filtration requirements so this method of "smoothing" the whiskey is a bit of a scam. Plus, there are exceptions made for distillers in Tennessee, so is it even that hard of a requirement at all? It all goes back to my core belief that there is no wrong whisky or wrong way to drink it: enjoy the whiskey you like, the way you like to pour it. Cheers!

I'm totally with you! I got 2 bottles of Holly Creek in Nov '24 in an adventerous way and I was absolutely impressed of it too. And yes, the way of distilling this real Whisky, the maturing in wooden casks and all this way of producing is unique in Cambodia or South Eadt Asia because all this other so called Whisky alcohols there are not really Whisky... This moment i'm back in Siem Reap and the day after tomorrow I have a date in the distillery... that's so great, i'm looking forward so much! Thank you Mr. Sokun!!! I also can tell you the Story of my two bottles (one i gave as a present to a Whisky friend of mine). I was in Kampot as I found the webside of Holly Creek in the Internet. So I thought: I will go to the shop to buy one bottle... but no... no one in Kampot heard of this Whisky before. So I thought further on: ok, next place Phnom Penh, there i will find it... Then I got the idea to write to the distillery via the website contact form with the question for a place to buy Holly Creek, so i did. I got a nice and fast answer of Mr. Sokun but it wasn't this what I was hoping to read. He wrote that there is no shop in Cambodia where i can find it apart from the distillery shop (in the time of nov '24). Ok, I was in the far south, Siem Reap is in the north and I had to go back to Germany from P.P. Then Mr. Sokun made me an offer to bring a bottle to my hotel in P.P. and... unbelievable... some days later a colleague of him stood infront of my hotel and brought me two bottles. This is such an heartwarming and unbelievable Story, i had to tell... I love this country and the people there!

That's a fantastic story, thanks so much for sharing it! I love it when distillers understand that distribution is the key to the success of a whisky and go the extra mile (or 1000). When I was in Broughty Ferry, Scotland and the Indri Distillery offered to send me a bottle of Trini (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn-3iHuueJKnq68), I was shocked that it arrived so quickly. That review is still my top viewed video of all time (by a long shot). Cheers and thanks for watching and commenting!

@WhiskyRiffs thank you and yes, I can imagine... I will watch the video later. I'm still in Cambodia, had a phantastic date in the distillery with the sales manager and the master distiller, with food and lot of different drams directly from the casks. They are in the topic Holly Creek with there whole power, energy, heartblood and the distiller got shiny eyes as he was telling me, what he is doing there. And what I can say: be curious about the Gold Label Edition, I could try it after a short time in the barrel and it was great. It will be worth to wait for the next maybe 4 or 6 years... 😉

I just returned from almost three weeks in Tokyo last month and (whilst visiting one of the Don Quijote stores) spied several bottles of Japanese whisky in various sizes. I bought a small bottle of something called Nikka 'Black Clear', which was surprisingly inexpensive, and surprisingly tasty. Since returning to Canada, of course it wasn't available anywhere, so I bought a bottle of Nikka Yoichi single malt recently which is also very nice. The Black Clear I believe was 37%, which I think somehow contributed to how nicely it was on the palette.
@WhiskyRiffs26 күн бұрын
I've never heard of Nikka Black Clear before, but after some research, I found that it's made from unpeated barely and is a blended whisky. The low ABV doesn't surprise me, since the popular drinks in Japan seem to be whisky highballs with diluted alcohol levels. Cheers!

I love your "sitting on the beach" visual. Since I've had a lot of great experiences with friends while sipping a dram or two, I also get that feeling of fellowship while enjoying whisky. One of my favorite calming Scotch expressions is Signet from Glenmorangie (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIOqdH6eZ6aXhM0). It's too expensive for a nightly pour, but I did cherish having a bottle around to treat myself. Bruichladdich has an even more expensive expression, Black Art, that's delicious, but not enough to justify the price (kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5W1pq1rr9pkm5o). Cheers!

Thanks for adding that age comment. I don't know why I was thinking the Classic Laddie was a 10 year based NAS bottling. I used to do that, Scott, but I never found a good way to accurately adjust the dram. I'd have some open up and others just get hot. I figured that I'd leave the experimentation to each individual because, in practice, I never add water to whisky. I may be missing out on notes, but it's low on my list of concerns. Everyone else's prices are always way lower than mine! Here in Britsh Columbia, my favourite whisky--both for taste and value--was Laphroaig's Triple Wood. At $100 it was divine. Sadly, it was discontinued a few years ago. Ardbeg's Uigeadail, at $160, is a far more expensive replacement with a similarly gorgeous profile. Laphroaig Lore, which is $185, is divine, but that's likely a once in a lifetime bottle for me on account of the cost. Laphroaig Quarter Cask around $105 now(!), was my first peated scotch, and they say you never forget your first. Very oaky, and much like the Triple Wood, though without the sherry-cask finish to sweeten it. Laphroaig 10, is very similar to the Quarter Cask, but less oaky. I remember for seaweed, almost vegetable notes from this, which is wierd. Still a peat bomb, so still good! Ardbeg 10 was decent, but not worth buying again for me. Ardbeg's An Oa was much better, though still not worth buing again for me. I had a love-hate relationship with Lagavulin 8. Good taste, bad taste, good taste, bad taste right to the end of the bottle. I guess whatever i was eating or drinking those days really affected it. Port Charlotte 2013 i tried in about 2013, I think. I did not like this whisky. It tasted for me like the inside of a cow's intestine with a horrible aftertaste. Somehow it got better with time, though. Strangely enough, the very end of the bottle was beautiful, sweet, even liquorice. What happened? My next mention is Tobermory's Ledaig, which I think you should have put on the Islay list even though it's from the neighbouring island of Mull. It has a flavour profile similar to a Laphroaig! Salty, smoky, briny, sweet! And at only $80, **awesome** value! Honourable mention for Talisker 10 fromthe island of Skye. Salty, peaty, peppery, just wonderful! The peat is much lighter, though. Three bonus blended bottles for those looking for ultra-cheap peat: -Black Bottle: the poor man's Uigeadail. Much less complex, and definitely less long-lasting, of course. But at $35, it fills a niche. Cutty Sark and Cutty Sark's stronger and sweeter Prohibition Edition at about $30 and $45 respectively, don't advertise themselves as peated, but they do have a light peat note if you need that cheap fix. For the money, they are quite good. I saved the best for last out of the cheap bottles: Teacher's Highland Cream. I was unable to get this $30 bottle anywhere for nearly two years, but it has made a triumphant return! This is my go-to bottle when i dont want to break the bank.
@WhiskyRiffs2 ай бұрын
That's a wonderful list of expressions and notes, thanks for sharing! There are a dozen or more Port Charlotte expressions and all are quite unique. Remember that when you taste a whisky, it will taste different depending on what you've eaten or drank recently. It can also have to do with storage of a bottle. Whisky does not like extreme heat or sunlight and exposure to either can change it. Lastly, we change. I've had bottles where my first taste was unremarkable and then weeks later, I was raving about those very same expressions. Humans are weird and funky creatures - which is how it should be. You seem to have a wide and diverse palate and can enjoy what you like no matter the price or style. Well done! It's a shame that whisky prices are higher now, but the way Canada imports liquor also has a lot to do with it. Cheers!

The colour op laphroaig has nothing to do with the casks, its artificial coloured which is a real deal breaker for me.. besides that: ardbeg an noa is the peat monster i would choose above al of these. Cheers
@WhiskyRiffs2 ай бұрын
Remember that the artificial coloring is a tiny percentage of the fluid in a bottle and is only used to modify the color. There is natural color, but the added E150 is often used to balance out the differences in different runs of an expression. That said, Ardbeg An Oa is a beauty of a peated Scotch. Cheers!

Great story! Which brings up a point I like to make (probably too often): What we love about a whisky (or any other food or drink) can have as much to do with the environment or people we were with when we first taste it. I don't think I enjoy Laphroaig 10 as much as I did when I was gifted my first bottle, but that memory of drinking it is so visceral. Whiskies do change, even the most consistent distillation and aging process can't overcome all the environmental differences in the organics, wood, and weather conditions during the aging process. Our tastes change too. There are brands of Bourbon and Scotch that I loved when I first started drinking whisky and now I'm just not much of a fan. They haven't gotten worse, I've simply moved on to other flavor profiles. Laphroaig was my favorite Islay, then Ardbeg, then the peated and unpeated offerings from Bruichladdich.
