Great stuff, Harlan. I wanted to add my experience on MF ratios... I have successfully bred Praecox and Bosemani and each time I only use a single pair. With the Praecox, which are obviously a bit smaller, I got roughly 50 eggs every sunday for 6 weeks straight. Now I have pulled my first Bosemani eggs and I didn't even wait the full week. I pulled two days shy because I was home today and saw the pair spawning all morning until about noon. I saw so many eggs I decided to pull and see. I counted 93 healthy eggs and about a dozen bad ones. This is my first batch of bosemani so I don't know if that is normal to have that many unfertilized ones. The praecox maybe gave me one or two per 50. I just wanted to add my experience as some people like myself might not have the capacity to get hundreds and hundred per week. One single pair will spawn just fine and still get a substantial amount of eggs weekely. Hope this helps anyone! Keep up the videos, Harlan! - From Florida

When u do a water vhange do u have to let coral raise the ph of the water going in, or is that overthinking it. Just take a bit out and add fresh water out of tap?

Great, easy DIY project, Harlan. I’m going to throw in my two cents if I may. For the hanger, I’ve been using the typical vinyl clad copper electrical wire. The stuff you’d wire a house with. The vinyl covering on the wire keeps it from corroding. Beyond that - I love it! A question: what king of air pump are you using? And are you using the black, poly pipe for drip irrigation for your main air loop? Thanks, Mate! ~Ron

Great video, Harlan! I’ve got a male and four females of wild type Molly from the Colorado River near to where I live here in Southern California. They really are spectacular looking. I’ve had them for about a year now and the still haven’t spawned. 😒 I have some Mickey Mouse Platys that won’t stop spawning. 😁 I quit trying to separate out the gravid female and instead put a load of guppy grass in the tanks. That way there’s plenty of cover for the fry as well as a continual food source for them to pick at as they grow. Always love your videos! Keep ‘em coming, Mate! Cheers! ~Ron

Adding salt to your tank is said to assist injuries to heal. help the slime coat on fish to form, improve gill function, inhibit the absorption of nitrate and kill some fish parasites. But salt may adversely affect tank plants and snails.

Hey Harlan, nice runthrough of the setup. One little hack I used was to use the base that was cut off the bottle and once you have added in the eggs, throw that base on the top as a partial lid to help reduce evaporation. I ended up giving up on the dual cap setup due to egg clogs during extraction, ended up going full bodgy bros and changed back to default screw on cap, got a piece of bamboo zip tied the airline onto it to feed air from top down, use the same line for extraction so not too bad until you get a mouth full 😂 Also I ended up using whipper snipper cord for the loop rather than fishing wire or metal wires... figured that has to be strong enough and had plenty of it around.

Hey Harlan, I want to throw in my two cents. I definitely agree with having a bigger tank for colony breeding swordtails. I think it's a must to have the space to allow the fry to be able to run for cover. My tank is a 3 footer, 40 gallon, and I've got a load of hornwort floating at and near the surface. I've also got a load of Vallisneria alond the back of the tank and the leaves are growing up and across the top of the tank. The fry can hide up in the hornwot as well as even hiding on top of the Vallisneria leave that are laying flat just below the water surface. I am still trying to figure out how the fry are are going to sex out. I remember you video where yuo were talking about temperature and pH meybe being determining factore wit the sex. My last batch of fry all turned out male. Hopefully this batch will be different! Anyway, thanks for a great experiment! Cheers! ~Ron

Hi! Interesting video. My opinion is that you need a planted aquarium with a bunch of hiding place, this is my way now. The parents and the other adults doesnt eat all the babies. The other way is that you are mentioning with the small boxes and maybe the same version but the professional way is that you take a lot of adults in the top of a huge IBC or any bigger tank and you put a net under them where the babies can go to the bottom of the tank. This is a method that i heard from a professional breeder. Huge space for the adults, and put a net in the top section of the tank.

I've been breeding Black Mollies in a tank just by themselves. It has black substrate and plenty of long roots on the floating plants. I've noticed that if you put a few smaller fish in the tank (endler size) it gives the adult fish something to chase. They don't eat them. Also Swordtails are know for eating their own young. My breeding project for Red Swordtails are in a seperate tank with lots of plants and hiding spots. So far I've only seen one baby. Keep on experimenting.

@@arghdubliner4440 great question! I actually just undid that tank a few days ago and it had very little to no fish poo or molm underneath for the amount of time setup so I don’t imagine it would need to be cleaned very often. I would say it would last the longevity of the scape which for me is around 1 year or so. But again it’s all down to how you want to do it. For me it worked great barely ever did water changes and water stayed crystal clear.
