Good info, after huricane Maria we spent 45 days without power and interrupted afterwards. Bought an Iceco 45 and with a 12V battery and solar panels we can run it for 24 hrs. Lessons learned after the storm.

The narrator keeps saying mylar bags.Where do you get them ? Also do those bags inhibit the growth of biological organisms.Do the bags also block out light ? Would blocking out light help extend the life of the food ?

Problem is “that neighborhood barbecue/potluck” where you excused yourself from is WHERE the plot to mob attack your house is hatched when they are eventually desperate. You still have to go to the Q, pretending you are in the same predicament with thawing food. And then start rationing so you are calorie deprived, but surviving. You wouldn’t want them thinking you were being well fed, keeping on weight. If you can I’d want to find a way to hide those panels up on your roof. People will be walking around your house grid down because of reasons. Wouldn’t want them sabotage panels/wires Easily.

$200 is ridiculous to recommend for a person starting out to spend on a bug out bag and its contents. I have watched many many videos on the subject, and most of the items you will be putting in it are already in your home. Many others can be picked up for just a few dollars at discount stores, flea markets, the dollar tree, and walmart. You are right about upgrading as you can. The important part is to start somewhere. I would recommend a $50 challenge including the bag. Also it doesn't have to be a backpack. Just do the best you can with what you have.

JUST BUY AN OLD ASS PROPANE POWERED REFRIGERATOR!! anything that runs on propane will run on methane! i use to use a SERVEL refrigerator made in the 1940's and 50's. i ended up selling it to a friend to use at his hunting camp. a refrigerator from an old camping trailer THAT DOES NOT USE AN ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT BOARD such as from a 1978 holiday rambler camping trailer, mine is cooling right now!! i generate METHANE GAS instead of composting poop and biodegradable scraps. in south dakota i dug into the side of a hill, laid down 2 layers of plastic on top of old carpet. then laid 2 feet thick recycled styrofoam on top and covered with 2 more layers of plastic sheet. then poured 4 inches of concrete on top as a concrete slab .i then built a hollow block wall around to make the 4 walls. then plastic sheeting (2)down the outside of the walls foot 2 feet outward and then filled with chipped styrofoam, i used all kinds of styrofoam trash . i built a wooden ceiling and covered it again with 2 feet of styrofoam and plastic sheeting. i had an insulated stove pipe go through the ceiling and styrofoam. from there the pipe was painted black and stuck up 6 feet past the 4 foot of dirt i put on top of the building and put a rain cap on top, but inside i built a gate valve for the pipe so i could close it off real good. i put another pipe out of the front wall with another gate valve. i filled 2 liter pop bottles with a 10% calcium chloride (ice melter)and 90% rain water. i laid these down 2 layers thick all around the interior walls from floor to ceiling, with chicken wire as the final layer. there is a mudroom like entrance so aire from outside does not enter when the door is open. it takes just 10 days total of -1 or lower outside temps to turn these pop bottles into ice blocks that are at 0 degrees F instead of 32 degrees F. this home made freezer will keep my meat FROZEN FOR A FULL 365 DAYS! i just open and close the vents to let cold air from outside in and warmed from the sun air inside the black pipe exiting the top pulls in the cold outside air! i did NOT invent this device, an engineer on the east cost built one with high school students with a community center on top! old timers use to dig a big hole and build a building over it, fill it partially with sawdust and then pack in big blocks of ice from the lake and cover with sawdust. i use to help an old man do this in minnesota back in the 1980's im now an old man and i learned by doing. dont be afraid, get out and experiment with living off grid! my wife is from the Philippines, and most rural people there dont even have electricity! we lived OFF GRID IN SOUTH DAKOTA FOR 3 FULL YEARS IN A CAMPER, BLIZZARDS AND -30F TEMPS!!! when i was a kid my grand parents still used kerosene mantel lamps (Aladin brand) alot and had a smoke house etc... my mom left me almost $200,000 in 2016 when she died. so i built us everything UNDERGROUND. everyone thinks we live in a very small shack and dont know we actually live in our self built bunker! our newest car/truck is 22 years old, and we feed them corn! people think we are poor!!! LOL!!!

many of these items can be stored in canning jars. Use whatever size you like and vacuum seal the jar. I have opened beans and rice and paste over 15 years old and it is great. I sealed OREO cookies and so far after two years, they are fresh and tasty. what would you give for a fresh OERO?

Any specific recommendations on chest freezers other than chicoms anyone has had for years? Obviously, I'm looking for known reliable freezers? 12 volt or 120 volt for those with solar capabilities? I've bought small 'bar' fridges in the past and after 1-2 yrs, they quit working.

Grid down power: a small car battery bank with 2 inverters, a dual fuel generator, 3 solar (generators), 23KW solar panel array with a way to trick it to run during grid down, and an electric car with a 24KW battery and a 12v 150a battery charger. I can (and have already used) the electric car as a battery bank, charging it during the day and using it to power inverters. I also have a high efficiency tall dorm refrigerator for long term grid down. And a chest freezer. And I've started pressure canning food.

Good tips! We're on the Texas Gulf Coast, and we get the effects of hurricanes, regular storms, power outages from the heat, and winter storms. It's practically a given that Something is going to happen at least every year or two. Your think everyone in the area would have at least basic preps, but many do not. Many items that are useful in a power outage are also useful for camping, picnics, or tailgating. When purchasing items, think about secondary uses when making your selections. If it's in good shape and you have a full tank, your vehicle is a powerful generator. You can cool some down that's in heat distress, charge sneak devices, and with a modest inverter, ghi can run medium size items. I agree 100% in having some cash on hand. A store may still have power but no connectivity to process credit cards. Cash will work. Some smaller stores without power may still sell you items for cash. And you may need to buy items or services from some who will only accept cash. A couple of gallons of gas, baby formula, diapers, bottles of water, or some ice are all things that I've seen or heard were only available for cash. Conversely, during mass evacuations, some gas and diesel retailers will choose down, but leave their pumps on for credit card purchases. Even if a store is closed, check if their pumps are on it there's power in the area. But you'll need a valid credit card that is not maxed out. You might need a CC for a road side dinner on tie way out of a disaster area, or for a hotel. A cash tip might even free up a room when there are no official vacancies. In our area, cell service and regular cable/ internet often go down when we lose local power. We recently switched to fiber optic internet, and during our last power outage it still worked. But regular internet and cell phones were out. We were able to power up our router and TV for movie night. We could also send and receive email, make calls, and send text messages with an internet based phone line. Free: If you have extra space in your freezer, freezer drinking water. The extra cold mass will keep your freezer's contents cold longer, and you'll have refreshing cold water if you still don't have power after a few days. If you have time, you can freeze a lot of water, and then put the frozen jugs into coolers while you freeze a second or third batch of water. Then you have lots of extra cold storage and cold water.

The most important thing to remember about refrigerators and freezers if you want to save energy, is to limit the number of times you open the doors and reduce the amount of time they are open.

I try to keep my ford lightning charged to 90% most of tge time and normal charging comes from my 13 kw solar system. That gives me about 118,000 watts of power so using my on board 7200W generator I can run pretty much everything in my home including my deep well pump. My average daily kwh useage is about 11-12 kwh/day so that's approximately 10 days of which I'm sure to get enough solar energy to replenish my trucks energy.
