I was given a NT, Proverbs, and Psalms pocket bible in college by Navigators. In 1994, 15 yrs later I looked up NBV and purchased a Hendrickson pressing. It is my favorite translation. While others versions are flashier, this one has the best words, IMHO.

I had a CEB, intending to find a dynamic equivalence more mainline than an NLT and less literal than an NRSV or NASB. I did like it for books like Hebrews and the Pauline Epistles to clear up some more obscure passages, but I felt the Psalms and other poetry lacked a certain reverence for devotional use and it was a little large for my small church bag. I didn't end up using it as much as I thought I would, so I ended up giving it to a close friend who is deconstructing from a VERY conservative Christian upbringing as an alternative to her very literal ESV, along with an NOAB for good measure. Sometimes I miss the CEB, but I think my ideal dynamic equivalence Bible would be a thinline or compact Revised English Bible if those were still around. I have a hardback of the REB but it's just a bit too chunky for me to lug around.

I don't know anything about the SBL Study Bible other than the fact that it takes an academic approach. I understand that its contributors are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, secular, etc. I think overall, the NRSV revision is good. But they did allow their agenda regarding gender issues to cloud their translation and textual notes in 1 Corinthians 6 and in some Old Testament passages. For this reason I cannot recommend the NRSVue. Nor do I use it as my primary Bible.

I was floored when I first started reading some dispensationalist fundamentalist writings. I thought we were supposed to take the bible literally, and then I find that this or that passage (such as the sermon on the mount) really doesn't pertain to me, but really some magic 8 ball hermeneutics and numerology are where the real substance is. Yeah, nope. I keep reading the bible and try to compare scripture with scripture and let it speak for itself in its contexts. I tend to take things literally, but then that gets me all confused when I have a tough time ignoring the designated verses by the particular denominations.

I thought most biblical scholarship was secular in the modern era (mind you - I don't know much about the subject). How do you reconcile your faith in God given your exposure to the massive amount of scholarship that almost seems to dissolve the belief system (ex .Bart Ehrman)?
@joest.eggbenedictus189618 күн бұрын
@@DavidDoesStuff545 It doesn't dissolve it at all, but reinforces it. Besides, what's worse than ignorance than ignorance with enthusiasm. The Holy Spirit lets us discern the wheat from the chaff, but you can't get wheat without chaff to begin with.

My brother is LCMS and their seminaries *claim* to completely disavow historical-critical scholarship but still use it when it helps bolster their theological case. On the opposite end, I've seen some fellow UCC folks who focus on historical-critical interpretation to the exclusion of other perfectly valid ways to interpret Scripture and thus treat it like a dead historical anthology. One leads to dogmatism, the other to indifference. One thing I'll always be thankful for about my time in the Catholic church was my parish's emphasis on diverse hermeneutics to read and absorb Scripture. It really helped my faith. Loved this video! "4 Kings 8, 24-26" in the Bibles translated from the LATIN VULGATE (and NOT the KJV, as you mis-stated) is the same as "2 Kings 8, 24-26" in Bibles translated from the HEBREW. It's like this: VULGATE has 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 3 Kings, 4 Kings, whereas HEBREW-based translations have 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings.

I'm a UCC Christian and probably wayyyyyy farther left on both the theological and political spectrum than the average Christian. But you know which Bible I use most frequently? The NASB 95, because I'm poor and got it for cheap, and the thinline size fits conveniently in my Church bag. Is it my favorite translation? No - I have everything from the NRSV to the KJV to the REB to the Christian Community Bible. But the most portable and readable (font-wise) translation I have is the NASB, so until I can get a NABRE or NRSVue thinline in a good typeface and size, my NASB will be here to stay. Translations matter a lot less than people think they do.

I am also a bit burned out on the KJV/RSV family (though I regularly use the RSV and NRSVue in the lectionary).
