You likely need to go to your avatar's Parameter list and toggle the "Synced" box for each parameter you want others to see. Without that, any changes to those parameters in your menu will only apply on your local client.

Shoot, KZbin didn't notify me about this comment. :( That sounds like a potential Write Defaults issue. Do you know if the pre-existing animations were set up with Write Defaults turned off? If so, you'll need to set Flight's animator states to Write Defaults Off as well, and create a dedicated Off animation for the flight. I have a video about Write Defaults elsewhere on my channel if you want more info on Write Defaults. I'm really sorry it took me so long to get to this. :( I don't know why I didn't get any notification.

Hey, I don't know if anyone knows how to fix this, but at 6:20, when I go to the "Expressions" subsection, my "Menu" and "Parameters" fields cannot be double clicked; nothing pops up. Also, both fields are named "None (VRCExpressionsMenu)", while the ones shown in the field seem to be named already. Does this mean I have to set this up beforehand, or is this a problem unique to my avatar? I use a Rusk avatar, if that matters.
@ToolboxMotley
@ToolboxMotley 8 ай бұрын
Yeah, you'll need to make the Menu and Parameters for your avatar, first. If you right-click in the file explorer section at the bottom, you can select Create > VRChat > Expressions Menu/Expressions Parameters. After making them, just drag them into the relevant fields in the Avatar Descriptor to start working with them. :) If it won't let you drag them in, check the avatar in the Hierarchy so see if the name is colored blue. If it is, right-click it and select "Unpack Prefab Completely", and that should give you access.

I then redid everything, thinking that I might have missed something throughout the guide, but I still get stuck on the "Refreshing Data" (with different errors this time). I'm not sure where I went wrong. My guess is that I might have dragged the wrong head bone into the source at 1:30, but my avatar doesn't have an explicit name for the head bone; it's just called "Body" (shows the orange outlines of the avatar's head in the scene). Thanks for the tutorial! Am I correct in saying then if you have toggles to show/hide something, they will always be shown to say users with high shield levels if you use the write defaults on method. Using the write defaults off method, you can ensure the toggles are always off for those users. For example, I can have two clothes toggles, and if a user has a high shield level they both won't show, instead of both showing at the same time?

Your Write Defaults setting won't make any difference in whether someone sees your objects when their Safety Settings are disabling your animation. What they see of your toggles depends on which ones are on or off by default in the Hierarchy; if you have a shirt turned on by default in the Hierarchy (Animation Controller irrelevant, in this case), they'll see it. Whereas if the shirt is turned off (name is greyed out) in the Hierarchy, it won't show up if they have animations turned off. Hope that clarifies things. :)

Hey I followed this tutorial but haven't been able to get my avatar to fly. I enabled the flight platform by default to test it and it still doesn't fly. I followed the steps shown in this video, and I'm not sure what I'm missing. I saw another comment that you responded to talking about a giant avatar. My avatar is 0.23 meters tall. Could that be the issue? Or will the fact that it is both pc and quest compatible affect the pc version of the avatar and make it not work?
@ToolboxMotley

You won't be able to use it if you yourself are playing as the Quest variant, but that shouldn't prevent the PC one from working. I could see the small size potentially causing issues, but there should be *some* setting that would get it to work. Can you list out the Flight Platform's Transform settings, as well as its Collider settings? Have you made sure the object is placed *in* the avatar rather than underneath it? (When collapsing the avatar in the Hierarchy, you shouldn't be able to see the flight platform's object in the list.)

I got it working now! Just had to move the flight platform under the viewport rather than my avatar. My avatar's viewport is janked for some reason and has to be off to the right or it doesn't work. Unfortunately now whenever I try to create the on and off frames for the flight platform, it switches the animation window to be of the flight platform instead of letting me switch it on as an animation. Do you happen to know how the animation works? Is it a Particle System? After that, just set them up in sequence in the Animator. Off goes to On when "Sword" Equals True, and On goes to Animated when "SwordAnimation" Equals True. Do you have the VRC Station's object turned on when you upload the avatar? If it's only turned on via animation, VRChat won't acknowledge its existence. Are you generally playing the avatar at a different size scale than what you uploaded it at? Some positioning-related components break when scaling is in play, such as Parent/Position Constraints. I've not tested to see if Collider components are the same way. I doubt this since you're looking at this tutorial, but are there other chairs on the avatar? An avatar can only have 6 maximum. If you're using an avatar base that might have chairs already on it, or the GoGoLoco prefab (which adds chairs to its flight function), your new chair may just be getting shoved out. I've had a rare couple instances where certain people just can't use my chairs despite having my avatar shown, or even being on my Friends List. I've not determined the cause of this; might be a setting I haven't found buried in the VRChat options. Could you grab a different avatar that has chairs on it, and see if the same people can use those ones?

Yeah, they recently added a "Synced" option to menu parameters that has been confusing loads of people. X) Go to your Menu Parameters list (the one that appears at 4:45), and turn on the "Synced" box for the parameter you're using, the one on the far right. By default, parameters are non-synced now, which means that they won't send their on/off status to other players, so any animations using them only take effect for the person wearing the avatar. It's a great addition, but they really need to have it turned on by default instead of off. :x

Double-check your Transitions to make sure that it returns to the Off state when your Parameter is turned off, first. If that's not it, it may be that you have Write Defaults turned off for your avatar. You can check my Write Defaults video to see how to fix it; it's a somewhat involved process, but it basically involves making another Animation that specifically turns off the object you're toggling, rather than depending on that object's default state in the Hierarchy.

Amazing tutorial with clarity. I am curious, how would it be possible to make it so that you could rapidly high five someone though? I've thought on adding multiple reciever setups for it, but I'm not sure how I'd make it work so that the sound effects/particles I have would stack when they contact. Any insight would be lovely
@ToolboxMotley
@ToolboxMotley Жыл бұрын
Stacking sound effects isn't really viable unless you make multiple objects with that sound effect, and have them trigger sequentially as the high five is activated. However, you can have it restart each time the high five activates. Change the animation so that, instead of simply activating the sound effect for one second, it instead *turns off* the sound effect in the first frame, and then turns the sound effect on in the next frame. This resets the sound, allowing it to trigger as soon as it turns on again (which is right away, since the second frame turns it on). As for particles, give the system a really high Emission Rate Over Time so that it's guaranteed to get some particles out, and then make your animation turn on the emission for one frame before turning it right back off so as to not constantly emit particles. Finally, on the animation state that contains the high-five animation, create a new Transition straight back to the same state (from "On" to "On"), with Exit Time and Transition Duration set to 0, and the Conditions of "High Five Equals True" and "GestureRight Equals 2". This makes it so that the animation can restart if the conditions are met again while it's still playing.

Easily one of the most important things to nail in a tutorial. At 2:34, what is happening when you drag an animation onto a gameObject the way you did? There are enough fields and components on that gameObject that I am concerned that doing such a thing risks having it populate an undesired field. What's going on?
@ToolboxMotley
@ToolboxMotley Жыл бұрын
Dragging an animation onto a game object will add that animation to its Animation Controller file if it has one, or will create a Controller file and add an Animator component if it didn't already have one. You generally don't want Animators on any of your objects except for the avatar, unless you want that object to have an animation that constantly plays while it's turned on. You have to have the animation in the avatar's Animation Controller in order to be able to add new properties to the animation. You can edit existing animations without having them in the Animation Controller, and the animations don't have to be in the Controller attached to the avatar's Animator component for them to be usable in VRChat. Putting them in the Controller is just so that you can put together the animation in the first place. Hope that answers the question. If it doesn't, feel free to ask follow-ups; I imagine the repetition in my wording could easily cause confusion. X)

How much do you cost to do a customized wheelchair avatar for people in wheelchairs?
@ToolboxMotley
@ToolboxMotley Жыл бұрын
That'd depend on the level of detail; if the arms need to roll the wheels, that'd take more time to set up, and thus cost more. If the arms don't have to move, it'd be much faster to set up. I'm also not a modeler, so you'd need to have the model itself already made. X) Custom locomotion animations are pretty tedious to set up in Unity, and I haven't done a lot of work with them yet. I've heard that they're easier to make in Blender, but I haven't looked into how that works, so far. Ultimately, I'd estimate the work to take 3 hours on the low end, up to 10 hours on the high end. At my current rate (subject to change in the future), that'd be $30-100. As I said, though, I'm not terribly experienced with custom locomotion yet; it's something I've been meaning to tackle at some point, so I may reach a point where I can do the work much more quickly, and thus much more cheaply. You're basically just going to be looking in whatever location your avatar's FX Controller, VRChat Menu, and VRChat Parameters are stored. If you don't know where they are, such as with a premade avatar, you can click on your avatar in the Hierarchy on the left, and look through the VRC Avatar Descriptor component in the Inspector on the right. You'll find the FX Controller as the fifth Controller in the "Playable Layers" section. The menu and parameters will be under the "Expressions" section. Double-click the items in their respective fields to make the edits outlined in the video. Hope that helps!
