Research a place before you go. Get a consultation with someone who has been there for some time. Then go expecting to spend money. Why would you go to a place anticipating it to be cheap and then expecting great, expensive tasting food and service? Then you go to a bar where these girls WORK and call them greedy for making money for the business they WORK at?? That's what they're there for. He is right. You have to ask for prices everywhere which is pretty annoying. Otherwise you end paying 400 baht for a noodlesoup at a market. Taxis i gave up and rent now always bikes or cars. Hotels have fake pictures and fake reviews. So you should book always only one night. If you avoid phuket pattaya etc and have your own ride you still can have a nice time in Thailand. Otherwise you just ripped off. Btw. Bali is much worse

GDP per capita in Thailand is 7000 USD making the average salary about 500 USD/month so yes it's a cheap country BUT you can't go to tourist traps and major cities where you're living like the top 10%. The only real cheap things are rent and labor so unless you're taking advantage of those don't expect Thailand to be cheap.

I was in Thailand 2011, i hated it. January. To hot, and the week i was there, a major week holidays. Everything closed including all major landmarks. No desire to return. I did meet a thai girl, took her to vietnam for a week. And no she wasn't a bar girl. But played with her in viet.
