Japanese culture has some clear similarities to western culture that cant be ignored (anime was inspired by western animation, manga was inspired by western comics) (western media and japanese media inspire eachother a lot) (the trans rights situation is also similar)

I wish I wasn’t 13, and I wish I was able to see DOOM in concert before he died…. I only discovered his music last year when my friend showed me to him, and he has become my favorite rapper of all time. RIP to the man, the myth, the villain.

Tbh... I just don't like what he does, and I don't like what he promotes and inspires in the music community. He has his own opinion, that's fine. But rating music on a scale to me is an ugly thing which kills what music is about. An album which is average, cliche, trite, boring, unlistenable to you may have gotten someone else through the most difficult times in their lives. THAT is the shit which has real meaning. That is where the subjectivity of it lies. And people wonder why others feel annoyed when some guy on KZbin decides to arbitrarily give albums ratings out of 10, as if it's something that cheap. I knew a guy who reviewed shitty movies on youtube and made fun of them. Eventually he was part of a process to direct a movie of his own, and realised how much effort, time, care it actually takes to create the final product. He ended up quitting trying to shit on low rating movies. My point is, critics don't know all that which goes on behind the scene. The freedom of expression and vulnerability which comes in making music. They don't have real appreciation for the art which is an expression of the person/people behind it. I believe there's a balance of critique, and freedom of expression and art. But I think on the Fantano side of youtube, the critique part dominates, which I am really not a fan of.

Rap is a style of lyrical delivery, not a genre. Hip-Hop is a genre, but also a broader culture. Referring to it as rap ignores all of the richness of hip-hop culture that rap is just one element of.

MF DOOM’s appeal lies in his layered persona and unmatched artistry. The mask wasn’t just a gimmick-it symbolized a rejection of industry norms, shifting focus to his dense, complex lyricism and surreal storytelling. As a self-styled supervillain inspired by comic books, he crafted narratives that blurred the line between fantasy and reality. His use of aliases like Viktor Vaughn and King Geedorah showcased his creative versatility, while his humor and humanity made his music deeply relatable. DOOM’s unpredictability, DIY ethos, and refusal to conform solidified his legacy as an underground icon and a symbol of artistic integrity. Truly one of hip-hop’s most fascinating figures.
