The physical copies of the Crater Speak book were available during his tour with Injury Reserve, I have a signed copy that makes the album experience feel a bit more complete, truly a unique multimedia investigation into blackness, presence, and absence

Loved this video! and I'm a huge fan of Malone's work. So much so, that I wrote a 20-page essay on 'crater speak' for my final project in school. In that essay I focused a lot on the sounds of the albums, and I think another really interesting part (besides the stuff you've mentioned, that I actually didn't even realize) of this album is the way he uses his sound, and sampling in particular, to emphasize a lot of the themes on the record. I specifically analyzed the 'Smile'-motive, where he often compares memories to drugs, and has subtle critiques of nostalgia. I think his criticism of nostalgia shines through a lot in the way he uses samples in 'A Quiet Farwell', where he creates this dark, cloudy and sometimes really scary offputting instrumentals, that reflect a dark image of the past. This paired with the 'siren'-motive, that as you mentioned symbolizes black death, creates this environment where trauma and nostalgia become hard to separate. So when he is looking back at the past in 'vergangenheitsbewähltigung' (which even Jasper mispronounces), he is realizing how dark the past really is. Both his own, but also the collective past (especially for black americans). This can especially be seen on 'smile 6'. He looks at his past, and a void is staring back.

i know i'm pretty late, but this is one of the best youtube vidoes i have ever seen. i found slauson malone at around the same time that you did and he has easily become one of my favorite artists. his unique sound and the messages that are in his work is truly beautiful. it isn't just music, it is a work of art.

Amazing video about an underrated producer, but can we appreciate the shirt that has a Joy Division shirt on the shirt. That is art. In a very Warhol commentary on consumerism kind of way.

Great dive into Slauson Malone's work. I first listened to Slauson Malone years ago but for some reason I've become hooked on Vergangenheitsbewältigung after revisiting it recently. It reminds me so much of Hymie's Basement's self-titled album. Both are hip-hop adjacent, surreal, and dream-like. And both have a kind of sublimated sense of dread. I wonder if anyone else would agree. (+ they both sound best when you're driving around at 3am)

I feel there was alot more to divulge on, especially as far as A Quiet Farwell and his disbelief in the past being a place. "The sun don't set, it just go away". Or Ssmmiillee ##55 being Smile #5, just very strategically elongated. But I think once you actually get your hands on the book, it'll make more sense

You say the themes are "Tricky to describe from someone with a privileged perspective". But the individual who wrote/created this project grew up with 2 famous parents in Hollywood. A family with generational ties to the music industry. So how are you more privileged than him?
@frederiksrensen61162 жыл бұрын
This album deals a lot with trauma, that is very bound to being black, like watching people like you, shot dead on the TV everyday. It is a privilege to not deal with the things, this album deals with.
