loved the series! I haven't read the book. It's so lovely to hear.

Helen Thompson making quite a rude point by not even bothering to sit upright. And womanspreading for the whole room. How tedious she is. Anyhoo, I hope everyone takes the time to read A Place of Greater Safety, because it is fabulous, thrilling, and very brilliantly constructed.

I've just read Normal People. I found it so sexist that I can't imagine what would have happened if it had been written by a male author. In the end is just a kind of Cinderella retold in desguise of modernity. A poor woman suffers abuses at home, by her brother and mother (in my opinion, them, and the dead father are the most interesting characers of the book). She is unable to do nothing about it. Neither when she is abused at school or parties. In the end, she thinks she deserves it. She develops a taste for submisive sex, but can't enjoy it, just with one Prince Charming, who rescues her in the end and knows how to make her feel submitted although he does'nt enjoy dominant role. So poor girl tale, all over again. I think Sally Rooney is the next Donna Tartt: all hype, great personality but very few things to offer on the litterary side. A cross between Barbara Cartland and the BDSM stories of Anne Rice, but with a twist of contemporary litterary workshop to make it feel modern, the voice of a generation, and so on.

For me the reason to not wanting to top smoking was that it allowed a 'time out' from life/reality to have a smoke. Like every cig was a pause button, very addictive...

I’m confused. Is a novel or a memoir? It reads like a memoir and the author speaks of it like a memoir but it’s called a novel. How is it fiction? The question about his use of vernacular and literary French is very interesting and lost in translation. I just finished reading Ernesto a 1953 novel by Italian poet and writer Umberto Saba who wrote it in similar way using the various lingos of his Trieste community but again lost in translation.

Is it just his bad reading, or the bad english translation or just the demand to get invested in this totally uninteresting text that makes me not interested in Knausagard?

I think it's probably for the best that you just pick up the first volume and give it a go. Or, look at each volume and the period of his life that it covers and see which one best suits your interests. You'll either adore it or you'll hate it.

I congratulate those who (for many good reasons) choose not to bring children into this world. I am 62. I decided not to father any children at 18 (when I was living in Ankara, Turkey). I am proud that I remained vocal about my opposition to human population growth. (I hope to plant many trees, edible plants, and enable whales, elephants, tigers, pandas, cheetahs, ... to propagate.)

For anyone interested, that feeling of smoking strong pipe tobacco is a lot like smoking pot the way it’s smoked in the UK/Europe. Mixing it (pot) with tobacco (the ‘spliff’) kills the psychoactive effect and gives this powerful headrush/nausea. It’s also kinda like smoking a cigarette when you haven’t for years.
